Notes to Self 444 who grew up with Christine and Meri (and her husband grew up friends with Robyn’s brothers) explained that quilting is a huge thing in polygamist families and it’s done for memorial type reasons. Meri would have made this quilt to commemorate her marriage with Kody and she clearly used a lot of his meaningful shirts, like the jerseys and price is right stuff lmao She suggested that Kody probably doesn’t care about that stuff at all, but because of this sort of quilting cultural thing, Robyn probably wants those scraps to make her own love quilt to Kody.

Meri is a genius. Her doing what Kody tells her then as she's doing it she tells things that have been secret for way too long. Kody tells Meri to give him the pieces of the quilt back and she does it, showing what an ass he is. As shes cutting, it's cathartic for her because she's getting rid of the pieces of a relationship that was so toxic and abusive. Then as she's cutting she is telling secrets about how cruel he really is and production is finally allowing this stuff out and not putting it on the cutting room floor.

You have to show the humiliation for her to come out triumphant when they give the narrative reward of her just taking down every aspect of Kody Brown’s horrible behavior. I am always struck when Cody, the other wives or the media critics talk about how ‘difficult’ a wife/woman Mary was/is. No one seems to take into account the emotional and hormonal hell Mary must have been living when she had difficult conceiving, had a miscarriage and ultimately had only one child in a culture where woman are expected to reproduce like farm animals. How hard must it have been to watch Janelle and Christine each going thru 6 successful pregnancies while her arms were empty. The rollercoaster of emotions she had to have been going through, and her determination not to run away from all the constant hurt and disappointment shows she is a woman of strength and character. I don’t fault the kids who are estranged from her, because it must have been tough living in the same house with a woman in such pain, but the adults should have been more empathetic.

Something i don't see people talking about is the role Meri's infertility plays in all of this. The 1st time i really saw it was when Leon was about to graduate high school. Cody and the other wives all left Meri alone in her emptiness feelings. All of this was before the cstfishinging. But it has made me wonder how that may have played into how especially kody sees and treats her. 3 years of trying to get pregnant and not being successful is a very long time. That culture sees women's primary value as ba you makers. I wonder if this is what started the animosity turning her more and more bitter. It doesn't make her behavior acceptable but could explain how things got where they did.

At the beginning of the show there was also a period where Kody and Meri talked about trying IVF. Robyn even tried to insist that she would be a surrogate for Meri. Meri ultimately said no, that she felt that if God intended her to have more children then it would happen naturally, and otherwise it wasn’t meant for her. Robyn, being Robyn, made it about herself was mad at Meri for not accepting her help. All of which I think isolated Meri even more from the rest of the family. She was rightfully sad that getting pregnant turned out not to be easy for her, and Kody and Robyn’s response was, “we tried to help you didn’t want it, so get over it already.”

Conspiracy theory: I think Kody is closeted. He mentions his lover in college but never that this person is female. He feels immense shame and guilt. He marries Meri as his beard, but resents her from the start. He marries Janelle to punish Meri. He is repulsed by Christine but marries her anyway to ease tensions in the family. Marrying Robyn makes Kody look like he has it all together. He also gets to punish Christine. I honestly think Kody, like many of us lgbt+, has religious trauma and has spent his life battling the expectations of his indoctrination and who he really is. Bear with me for a sec... Kody and Meri were married in April 1990. Given Meri's fertility issues, those first 3 years, it was just her and Kodi. Then, in January 1993, Kody spiritually marries Janelle. Janelle gets pregnant first and has Logan in March 1994 - the same month he spiritually marries Christine. Christine gets pregnant first. Then, Meri. Christine had Aspyn in March 1995 and Meri had Leon in July 1995. Although there's zero biological fault with Meri, I can see Kody not actually saying the words but treating Meri differently because of it. Kody may have resented Meri on so many different levels. Kody needs to take a very long look in the mirror and be completely honest with himself about how's he's treated his wives and children and the role he played.

Sarah, I totally “feel” you on this point. Kody is as vindictive as “F” and used Janelle to hurt Meri. My one problem - why/how does Janelle allow herself to be used this way? She didn’t gain anything but strife and heartache for decades with Meri. I have always seen Janelle as a smart woman???? Sarah and other women watching?

Meri said Kody says really nasty things comes out of Kody’s mouth and he doesn’t mean it…. Meri do you hear yourself…. He said it because he meant it! I like Meri but she is so dense sometimes, still giving Kody the benefit of doubt and he shows her who he is every time! Right after that he said he was telling the truth… so he meant every mean thing he has said.

ive had theories Kody was sleeping with Janelle and they planned the whole thing before he married her. Everyone thinks Janelle is innocent but ive seen her be manipulative MANY TIMES. She Fed both ladies on the land too

The hypocrisy is what is the worst factor in all of this and one glaring example is stringing Meri along but then wanting Christene back because we all know it’s the fact that he didn’t choose the end to that, he has to be in control of everything . I do feel like Robyn played a huge role in helping Kody ‘hide’ how terrible of a person he is. I don’t think anything is ‘new’ in regards to what he says and does, it’s just we are getting unedited clips. Robyn had to control him so the show would succeed.

Yes, yes, yes!! Kody has been playing the long game of punitive revenge. Marrying Janelle, scared loniness and financial and emotional damage. Kody has always blamed Meri for not being able to carry more pregnancy. Then, when Mariah decided to choose another path for life, I bet he blamed Meri. Everything Kody hates of the OG3, exactly what he hates about himself.

How ironic! Kody/Janelle got married on the first 3 day weekend in January. I see the logic of using those days off as easily as I can see Meri being hurt at the idea. It’s almost poetic how Meri recruited Robyn (depending on which story is being told) and Robyn has a son that shares a birthday with Meri and a daughter who shares a birthday with Truely. Aurora’s shared birthday was sort of buried in the delusion that Aurora was a triplet with Gabe and Gwen, despite being born 6 months later.
