On this film, just a trigger warning for my trans femme siblings. While there is a gesture, by adding Wendy Carlos, to the fact that trans women were making fucking rad electronic music and are completely forgotten in history... I suspect the makers of this film have not checked their internalized transphobia. The director gives Wendy Carlos all of 30 seconds in the film (pre-transition footage), allows her to be dead-named, and cuts to an audio clip that calls her music "retroactive" right after, because her early music reinvented the sounds of the classics. Clara Rockmore was revolutionary to do it with her cis body and the theremin but Wendy Carlos with her trans body and synthesizer were retroactive. This film is amazing and inspiring... and sadly reproduces transphobia and trans erasure.

I remember reading about Wendy Carlos. Having seen the film 2-3 times, I'm not sure if it deliberately set out to be transphobic towards Carlos. However, if the film had made more mention of her and her story, it would have brought things more up to date, given that it was already 2020.
