This recording was released in honor of his birthday anniversary. However, through his music Nikhil Banerjee has become eternal. Increasingly sitar lovers are drawn to the unparalleled manner in which he delivers this gift to all, simply music; that is all.
Nikhil Banerjee is in the eyes of all sitar listeners, India's great sitarists, having studied with the legendary Allaudin Khan (the revered guru of Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan).
The Title of Sitar Samrat will not be denied to him by anyone who listens to his performances, without any interference from the intellect, with an open mind.
Here he performs "Raga Bageshree,"
He is accompanied by Ustad Fayyaz Khan on Tabla.
Raga Bageshree ( 58.46 ) Alap ( 17.31 ) Gat in Medium Tempo & Fast Tempo in Teentaal ( 41.15 ) Nikhil Banerjee - Sitar Fayyaz Ahmed Khan - Tabla. Live in Germany 1971
Songs in Raga Bageshree Base:
Radha Na Bole Na Bole Na Bole re: Lata Mangeshkar C. Ramchandra
Jag Darde Ishq Jaag Hemant Kumar & Lata. C. Ramchandra
Chaha Barbaad Karegi Hume Mallum na Thha : K.L.Saigal

Nikhilji's music besides being eternal, it's ethereal, almost other worldly. Shades above every other known sitarist. Just beyond compare.

Absolute agreement. Everytime one listens to his Bageshree, he will leave all others, and return to this one.

Aah nikhil kaka! I spent some time with him in my childhood. He would spend several days a year at our apartment in NYC, I was very young then. I remember we slept in the same room for a few days. My father and he were guru brothers as they both were students of Ustad Allauddin khan. He was as sweet and humble man as his music is. Thanks for the upload

Every true guru sets a standard, a level which lovingly pulls the disciple, the sadhaka, closer and closer; first through intention and then through experience.Nikhil Da does it through His Presence that continues to vibrate in the hearts of millions.

Bageshree is one of my favorite ragas. I got one composition by contemporary well known Sitaree. It was good with element of "Josh" as well. But when the question of "melody" as coming, the 'notes' were not upto the mark, often getting cracked, causing "surabichyuti"! So I thought of composition by this all time great! I heard the same part of this composition. Oh! It was really so balanced! so melodious even , melody was never suppressed by the "josh"! And here the supremacy of All time Great Pt.Nikhil Banerjee was being established again! The name was introduced by my dad ( an unknown sitaree from rural Bengal) when I was a madhyamik school student ! Again I salute this great maestro!

No one plays Bageshri like Nikhilda. He played Bageshri with Anindo at my home in 1979 which I recorded on my TEAC reel to reel.

The absolute master. One of the greatest artists who ever lived. We are privileged to have so many live recordings of his work and thank you for sharing it with us. He makes bageshree his own - as with everything he played- and gives it to us as a glorious gift. One day someone will write a great master work about the maihar gharana and its importance to world culture

This is simply outstanding, extraordinary, transcendental, heavenly. The more I listen to him the better the understanding that he is the best. How beautifully and dexterously and artistically he manifests the texture of the raga.

Shailendra Chaudhary Can I respectfully chant this Yogi's name as Nikhil Babu. He in my opinion is much above prefixes like Pandit or Ustad. I stamp him in my heart as Yogi Maharshi who incarnated himself to play sitar to immerse us the music lovers in his Tapasya
