The first note played is so important. No one has thought more about this dimension of raga exposition as NB. Listen to the first meend at the very beginning. Captures the feel of Malkauns immediately. Nothing like NB in the musical universe...

Nikhilji has opened up an entirely new dimension to Sitar. Malkauns gets the appropriate treatment through the magical fingers of Banerjee. His talent, love, dedication and prowess shimmers in every stroke of the Sitar.

Have heard this particular rag played by NB countless of times. Each time the depth of his art is so mind blowing and beautiful. Takes one to another Loka ( world) of Divine music. NB an artist who brought heaven to our worldly realm via his sitar music. 🙏🏼 Much gratitude to this sitar master. 🙏🏼

A most complete Malkauns by the God of Sitar, leaving us in a trance. A reference benchmark of sorts. One only wishes that the younger generation of musicians follow and emulate Nikhilda to keep alive the purity of our music , rather than playing to the gallery for larger following & recognition and in turn loosing the soul of our music.

Raag Malkauns fascinates me. It does things to me. It keeps Dr.Hyde in me away. Dr.Jekyll takes over. He in turn is seduced by the initial plaintive notes of Malkauns. The introspective langourous initial Melody becomes a cyclotron as it adroitly moves in drut khayayal. A pastmaster, Nikhil, If ever there was one! May his tribe multiply Jashwant Narsidas Ponda

@@VISHUDDHATMA Yes, I was the tabla player in this concert recording. It is Bath festival during the Autumn of 1982. It has already been published by Chandradhara, a recording label from Stuttgart, Germany. Unfortunate, the key person, probably the CEO, of Chandradhara, Mr. Gopi Nag is no more. This was a very special performance by Nikhil Banerjee. We drove from Wembley to Bath in the afternoon. On arrival at the venue, the organizers delivered to us that they had already sold out all seats in the auditorium and more people, traveling from quite far, were waiting to be accommodated. They needed permission from Nikhil ji to remove some of the chairs and make arrangements for everyone, including those waiting outside, to sit on the floor. Nikhil ji was apparently very enthused to hear this and happily gave permission. With people sitting around us on the floor, eager to soak up every nuance of his artistry, Nikhil ji played an inspired concert of five hours. This Malkaunsh was the cream of it. He was evidently in a sustained state of trance during it, taken over and guided by some divine energy. I was fortunate to be the closest to him to witness and experience all it. And, thanks to Mr. Ratan Mukherjee for carrying and setting up his Grundik spool recorder, so that we are able to hear it now and in the future.

@@samirtabla Many thanks Mr. Chatterjee for the account. Glad to read the respect he used to command everywhere, though it's not a new information. Loved your tabla performance as well. This performance is a prized possession for me. I have the CD from Chhanda dhara. Sorry to note Mr. Nag no more.

@@BlancMasque Thank you, Vikram ji. I was very young at that time, 27 years of age. But, perhaps, not without sensitivity to the music I was accompanying. Listening to the 'ahaha and vahvah!' from the listeners in a small room, at 49:33 this is obviously not a formal studio recording and thus a private concert. So the name of the Tabla Player is difficult to find out, unless we get some help here.

@VISHUDDHATMA8 жыл бұрын
Noted. Thank you. . I will check again, Vaibhav. Since you are a Tabla Player, you have a more discerning sharper ear. Here is what I have come up with: SNCD 71198 Live Concert Vol 1 Malkauns released 1998 Probably 1982 Malkauns-Alap,Jor,Gats slow-medium teental with Samir Chatterjee live at Bath England AST/D 1318 1967 Malkauns Hem Lalit also Cassette STCS 04B 7426 01 - Malkauns 02 - Hem Lalit with Kanai Dutt also released by Capitol International Series, ST 10502 The Sitar Genius of Nikhil Banerjee 1967 and by EMI (Australia) Ltd. under the HMV label, with the same title OASD 7538. CDNF 150012 Sitar Recital I - CD issued 1989 (compilation - see PSLP 5072) 01 - Megh with Swapan Chowdhury alap and jhaptal 02 - Malkauns with Kanai Dutt (complete) vilambit drut teental So now, can you identify if this is Shri Kanai Dutt on Tabla?
@mohitsrivastava51977 жыл бұрын
I quite agree, this is most probably not Anindo Chatterjee. I think this is Pt. Samir Chatterjee, from among Pt. Kanai Dutt and Pt. Samir Chatterjee. The sound of Kanai Dutt's baaj was very different. I can be sure, even when this is not a studio recording.
