i have bought the complete book series and read it all (something like 15 of them). i have started reading thru again. apparently the tv series cuts out quite a few of the books, maybe half. in the back of the books bernard cornwell does historical notes and tells u which characters he invented and other not completely accurate events.

History itself spoiled the major non-Uthred-related plot points for me. So I've always been amused with the books playing heavily on "Oooh, who is going to be Edward's heir??" when I kept thinking, "But I already know!" Who's going to win this battle? History nerds already know. Will Alfred manage to unite the kingdoms? We already know. Doesn't hurt the story, but I was always amused by that.

You should read the books. They aren't as long as ASOIAF, they're only 330-340 pages long and Uhtred actually gets older. lol

Tiber Maxson Yeah but they are much more digestible than the complex court intrigue and deep world building within the ASOIAF series. That is large due to Bernard Cornwell’s first person narrative writing style in the Last Kingdom series. Thanks to this we get an intimate look at Uhtred as a complicated and flawed character instead of the more level-headed portrayal in the show. Following one person with a first person narrative as opposed to the countless ones in ASOIAF make it much easier to follow for someone who maybe watched the show and is curious about the books. Not to mention trying to get someone who doesn’t really read to commit to 340 pages is easier done than getting them to commit to A Game of Thrones, which has 694.

I enjoyed this episode but the whole Sons kill their father for power is getting old now. I think it would have been cool if Uhtred killed Aelfric getting his revenge and his son heard of this which would of lead him to sail back and take some type of revenge mission against Uhtred. (I never read the novels so I'm not sure how accurate the show is compared to them, I just think that would have been a cool alternative scenario.)

This part plays out quite differently in the books. Its quite confusing because in that scene there are 4 people named Uhtred - The hero of the books, his son, Aelfric's son and Aelfric's grandson. Long story short Uhtred (protagonist) cuts Aelfric's throat with Serpent Breath and laments that it was such a humane death, although the circumstances at the time didn't allow for Uhtred to enjoy his revenge. He also takes Uhtred (Aelfric's grandson) hostage when he leaves.
