My grandparents taught me that in terrible times, you can keep people alive on a potato, an apple, and an egg a day. They were farm people, with apple trees, chickens, and vegetables. They did have very lean times, but the goal was to have food on the table for the children, at least once a day. They did not see doctors, they had no money.
@carolineloder2083 Жыл бұрын
That's why the governments are attacking farming, cattle, the entire food supply. They want us to be dependent on the fake food they will be throwing us as crumbs while they feast on real food and enjoy living the high life just as usual. In the USA this year we have had many explosions at food processing plants and farms, many train accidents where they happen to occur near water and the train has hazardous chemicals leaking into the water...many towns burned down...look back into history and the 'great fires' and 'great famines'...all past 'great resets' courtesy of the ancestors of evil people like Klaus Schwab and the WEF, UN, Bill Gates and all the rest of those types. Now as our fearless 'leader' Potato Joe O'Biden says, they can Build Back Better...after destroying everything they can and taking everything they can from all of us.

When I was a kid back in the 1970's in a midwestern town in the USA my parents had our dairy products delivered to our home. The milk came in glass or some type of cardboard paper product. Then they started to put milk in plastic jugs. I remember seeing a newspaper article warning about using plastic to hold food. They said it was bad for health, especially children. I have regular medicines and they are always available from the chemist. If there are shortages it's a bit inconvenient but not worth worrying about. For example Tesco didn't have onions last week, so I got them from Asda. It's not an onion shortage, it's just that Tesco didn't get enough onions or didn't put them all out on display and they had loads in the back. I didn't panic, I just went to Asda. I was shocked at the prices of real estate, food, clothing, energy etc. I do business in Canada so I am familiar with salary levels. Its insane to think this is not going to end badly. While prices are high in say southern Germany, its more reasonable than in Ontario. What it tells me is that the reckless money printing since 2019 has debased the currency by 50+% or more, increasing the price of all tangible goods and services because of the change in the unit of measurement. Inflation is not being driven by excess demand. In my opinion, the Canadian dollar is WAY overvalued against other currencies. My guess is at least 25-30%.

Simple bread 500grams costs nearly 3 euros. i remember 100grams of ham was before like 1,20 euro, now its 2.50 or even 3 for the same brand same type. It's pretty bad. So I would say, to me its not 25-50% increase, but like 100% ...

Instead of having to "mound" or "heap" them, you can put about 6" of soil in a grow bag, put in a potato sprout, and fill the bag with soil. You will get a lot of potatoes that way in a small area. Lilly, thank you for keeping us updated on the situation in Austria. Things are getting worse here, too. I have noticed that there are many things that were available last year that are no longer in stock where I shop. The prices are going up on so many items. I have been trying to stay away from processed foods and focus on the things that we need. It is difficult. If this trend continues (and I don't see that it won't), I have no idea how people are going to be able to feed their families. I have noticed that fast food is more expensive. If we take our daughter with us, it usually runs around $30 USD or so. I can remember about five years ago that we could go to an actual restaurant for that amount of money and get healthier food. We don't go to the restaurants anymore. I think raising potatoes is an excellent idea. I hadn't thought of making a simple soup like you made, but I think we are all going to have to start thinking of simple, nutritious meals. It looked delicious! You are a smart woman. I hope things get better for you and your countrymen. Our thoughts are with you.

Home cooking is still much cheaper than eating out. Here in the USA I'm still able to get fatty ground beef at slightly under $3 USD per pound. Where do you live? What state? I’m in CA and at Walmart (the cheapest place around) it’s $6.42 per pound, but $5.76/lb for grass fed? It doesn’t make sense. But the inflation out here is much worse than the 3 or 4% that the government is telling us. What’s gas going for there? It’s about $6.00 a gallon here. And the governor just gave us a $.40 tax increase per gallon, recently. We pay the highest gasoline tax in the nation. I’d like to move, but my family is all here and has been for many generations.

I am from the second world, and there’s a reason why we value property ownership approximately as high as higher education. People prefer to save and eat less to buy anything, even a tiny little studio. Because when a new crisis hits (and it regularly does), the least you have is the roof over your head. We got used to it, but I understand that it seems like a drastic change for a huge chunk of the first world population.

Survival Lilly: while you can grow potatoes from grocery store supplies, they are coated with a sprouting inhibitor and may already be a year or two old from warehouse storage. Get several types of seed potatoes so your crop is not susceptible to a single virus/insect. Some places potatoes can overwinter, I had volunteers come up this year. So any wrinkly potatoes I still had in storage I dug a trench and put them in the ground, many came up the last few weeks, I'm marking so I can find them in the spring (and not plow them). If you have a little more space, look at growing flour corn (dent or flint type, not sweet corn).

Hi Lily, yes you are not alone there in Austria, here in Australia the gap between low class and high class is widening exponentially. Many many people who had no trouble with houses are living in tents in even major cities, and even with children. Houses are beyond the reach of young people even with two of them working full time jobs. The birth rate is flat lined. And yet we have just introduced 500, ooo immigrants . This is coupled with a major collapse in Housing developers due to increased costs and wages. You have to outbid others to get a rental, even a rom these days. Inflation in stores is ridiculous for day to day necessities, and it pays to shop around for bargains. A minority are weathering it better than others those who are earning around 100,000 a year are better positioned to live normally. Houses in the most major cities are bought up by the rich for investments, some owning many houses. Some are overseas buyers especially form China. I'm fearing that countries who used to be able to have a normal life and afford necessities are becoming poor. IMO this is not going to end well !!
@janinedupreez2714 Жыл бұрын
Im so sorry to read this. I was in Australia once many years ago and its a great place and the Australians were friendly. Same happening in South Africa. Food inflation is way above what is published. People are renting and not buying. Young people cant afford to buy - so go for the “smart” prison city options. Our middleclass is being decimated
@deborahdean8867 Жыл бұрын
Why would immigrants stay if there was no housing and expensive prices? Would they not leave? Or does the government give them assistance and priority?
@sergiozammel8261 Жыл бұрын
@@deborahdean8867 I cannot speak for all, and I'm sure it is not so in all cases. the paradox is it is supposed to be difficult to get into Australia, and I have it in good authority that 85% of Chinese who apply for even a travel visa get rejected. It Appears they all get the same dear John letter, and loose their application money to boot. And all this was in place when we were such GOOD friends ! On the other hand I've been to China 6 times without a problem, and treated kindly at all times. Even if you are married, the same hoops to jump through applies so don't get any bright ideas. Conversely if you are loaded with money ( legitimate or ill gotten ) and aim to invest in business or the community, or you have some type of skill that is lacking here for instance a Doctor or computer specialist the red carpet comes out and they pull out all pegs to entice you in. Paradoxically ( and I will refrain from where) if you have a certain amount of money to spend in the community and are prepared to work you may be able to wangle your way in on a temporary type visa. A lot of them come under the guise of learning for University, and Universities in this country are a big money spinner !!! Once they are here a great amount become uber drivers or taxi or truck drivers to fulfill the work necessity. From there they can wiggle their way around for more permanent visas. It is amusing that many gang/ drug related violence which is now fully Unleashed in major cities, come from overseas and have offshore connections. One Mafioso boss in particular was photographed hob nobbing with an ex prime minister and justice minister at a banquet. Only today we had an execution of 2 people in a major carpark in a Capital city in broad daylight. These type drive around in high end vehicles and have millions in ill gotten gain, whilst the normal joe is treated like shit under their shoes. I have no doubt that there are quite a few that have lied on their applications and the government like the court jesters they portray themselves as - are sucked in, They then pay taxpayers money to help these types into the country, more than likely with housing assistance programmes, and other lollies.

For over 30 years there were tons of yard sales every weekend, now there are hardly any. and what's being offered is mostly kids' plastic toys. Also, the quality and condition of clothes being offered at the local thrift shop has declined too, along with them jacking up their prices. Store coupons and sales are mostly for junk food, there are no more give aways like there used to be of things like dishes and cookware when you reached a certain dollar amount of purchases, a lot of packages have shrunk in size, and they are installing automated check outs. Thanks for the update and I'm sorry things aren't any better there than in the US. I'm trying to look at it as a game of me vs. them but for some it's become a matter of life and death.

This terrible food inflation is not happening in Alberta, Canada. It's true that consumers here purchase more from local farmers and greenhouse growers. The local Hutterite growers have not increased their prices at all but the retailers who offer the Hutterite products tried to increase 25% or more. We are now receiving deliveries direct from the Hutterite colony at the previous prices! Here is my thought - mortgages and rents have really gone up because of increased interest rates. The Hutterites do not use bank financing. Maybe that explains it.

Of great value is the COMFREY plant that can be used as fertilizer, either as a chop and drop crop or stewing its folliage in water. Its perennial and fool proof, comes back year after year. It propagates easily to create more needed fertilizer or alternatively can be used as nutritionally dense animal feed. It's a potent human medicinal as well.
