In Memoriam is my Best Book of 2023. It was so intense, realistic, heart wrenching, and has continued to stay in my thoughts months after I finished reading it. Highly recommend it. I added both the Europa books to my TBR. Thanks for your insights!

Barbara Isn’t Dying was fantastic!!! It almost made my top 2023 reads but narrowly missed out. I completely agree with you about Europa and there were 3 of their other books on my official best reads list. I talk about them all the time and I wish more people picked them up. Not only are the stories great but I love the quality of their books too. Thanks for championing them too! I have yet to get to The Road to Dalton but now I’m super excited to get to it.

Thanks for all your bookish content. There is some overlap in our reading venn diagrams and one area of similarity is Europa titles. I have a Europa author to recommend: Daniele Mencarelli. Two of his books are newly published in the USA. I read and loved The House of Gazes. Highly recommend this incredible story of a young man lost in addiction until he takes a job as a janitor at the local children’s hospital. I think you would love it.

Weyward was fantastic. The audiobook was very well done. I’ve had Sing Her Down on my TBR since August - did you talk about it then? Just borrows the audiobook. Emily Isn’t Dying sounds great. You always make my tbr groan 😂 One of my best underrated books of the year is The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn.

The two I’ve read are Little Monsters ( after your review) Weyward Little Monsters was a 5 star read for me. Weyward was more like 4 stars. I hear a train whistle ( lovely sound). We have no trains here. I’ve read 22 five star reads so far this year. Only two are non fiction. My Fourth Time ,We Drowned by Sally Hayden Good Morning Monster ( about therapy) My best fiction of 2023 still remains Deluge by Stephen Markley ☘️👋🍀📖☕️📚📕🇮🇪

I loved Road to Dalton as well. There was some things about In Memoriam that seemed unrealistic- Everyone in their families and at school accepted their relationship? Really?

Oh I am so glad to hear that. I can see what you are saying, but I do like to think that there are families/friends even back then that would have been okay with everything. But one out of two isn’t bad.

Weyward… I was so self hyped for this book. It was just not doing it for me. I was bored and constantly telling myself “I’m sure it’s just about to get good!” And it just never did. Similar to the lost apothecary.

Oh that is too bad. I never felt that way. I thought the pages just turned. But that is okay, tons of books to read in the world.

' In Memoriam ' I will search for. One gripe. Happy though I am that women can write about the love of two men, it is sad that more men do not put pen to paper about it and be published!!! Does the publishing system prevent this or is it a psychological click in the gut that says there is only a minority interest for it ? I read and like women writers, but I sense the male reader and writer are being put to one side.

oh I think that there are a lot of men writing about gay love - Brandon Taylor, Bryan Washington, Justin Taylor. There were debut novels by Kyle Dillon Hertz & Sidney Karger - both very good, and very different. You can certainly find them, promise.
