Dealing with completely ignorant customers was another problem. I could talk your head off with the certifiable IDIOTS we had coming in the shop I worked at. One guy didn't know that tires and wheels came in different sizes, offsets and bolt patterns. As far as he knew, all wheels fit all cars and all tires fit all wheels. I literally had to spend a half hour of my life explaining to this reject why I can't put a 14-inch tire on a 15-inch rim. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have to do that. It's not my job. These customers should have been turned away.... but the place I worked at had a "No turning customers away" policy because it was all about making money. Fleece the customer if you have to. But you can't explain to an unscrupulous store owner that it's not HIS reputation on the line. He gets to hide behind doors and a corporation. The town will figure out who I am and label me a bad mechanic. And then you have flat-rate BS just destroying the business. I used to work at a grocery store. I made more than a friend of mine who's a fully certified ASE mechanic. If the shop is dead, he ain't getting paid. I couldn't live like that!! Would love to start my own business. We had an interesting thing happen yesterday. A guy who has a business next to ours had a problem with his niece's VW Polo that he was driving - it wouldn't start. The EPC light was on and that turned out to be a simple fault - he hadn't out the fuel cap on securely enough and the system acknowledge the lack of pressure. In doing this we hooked up our OBD scanner and got absolutely no power to it. we are electronic manufacturers so this was right up our engineers alley. He found the fuse (had to look on the web for that) and the fuse looked to be intact (it passed a continuity check). He then decided that this was very strange so he did a voltage check across fuses and found that the one supplying the OBD port had input of 12V and output of 9V - that's crazy!. he took it out and looked at it under magnification and the fuse was damaged but still intact. Replacing the fuse brought the OBD back to working. Just shows how empirical you sometimes have to be to discover what is actually wrong.

E. Everyone else in the shop is more likely to mess with your work to get you fired and there is zero team work. No proper time is spent with the new out of trade school techs to train them properly so they fall into the same habits as above. F. Given the current amount of work available at his single location, I don't believe he would be interested in expansion yet. There are a lot of barriers of entry he would have to overcome given the different rules and regulations of each state. Besides, ultimately his goal is to be able to maximize his time with friends and family. How much more money is someone willing to chase after in exchange for time? As you age you realize there really is a point where you're comfortable with a certain income level. Any dollar earned over that amount will result in you giving up a minute with your family. My father was a traffic police officer on our motorways and they loved Range Rovers but they got looked after, issues where fixed that day not 5,000 miles later. Mechanics like to talk down all cars and have an excuse to charge you more, me have all heard them suck their teeth and tell you how a fix will be a problem. I've had a Jaguar XF for 5 years now and the only issue I've had was getting a wheel refinished after I scratched it on a curd (it's a rare wheel colour), every service has just been that a service and it's at 55,000 now. Don't get me wrong the jags of the 70's 80's and 90's were not great but all cars of that age had problems

Sad to see another shop turn customers away it's hard to make a living at a shop in the 1st place. Even know I'm live on the east cost & don't own extremely expensive cars. i would come to your shop for repairs or at least the items I can't fix my self because you are honest and it gets done the 1st time & you make an attempt to keep it within a reasonable cost. Thank you.

i almost think the owner of those S-Types would have been better off going to a Ford mechanic then a Jaguar mechanic. I know a lot of Jaguar Dealerships and mechanics hate the S-Type just because it isn't a Jaguar underneath. if you have the mechanical prowess. You can fix them your selfs, they aren't that difficult. I should know, got 2 Lincoln LSs. Both of which ive tried to do all the maintenance on my self, or with a bit of help From a mechanic friend.

Your honesty, expertise and thoroughness is being rewarded by getting the hardest problem cars. Congratulation!! I am a modestly competent DIY (retired doctor) who enjoys tinkering with my Hondas. Still, at times, I will take a car to a garage or dealership if I am time pressed. Probably 50% of the time I still end up fixing the issue or declining an obviously fraudulent repair. Looking forward to the videos.

I know the feeling all too well in regards to people working on a car and not completely fixing it. They did that with my old pick up truck. It spent more time in the shop then I spent driving it so I finally sold it once it was sorted. The mechanic tried to tell me that the rear end was going out. Turns out it was a simple bearing so I asked them to replace the bearing when they were doing a clutch job is going to be more labor then they wanted to tackle.

He needs another good mech or two. Plenty of space to keep 6 mechs or more working but he just has 4 plus himself. Get them in and out faster and you don't need more room. Of course parts delays and insisting on keeping all the cars inside is an obstacle. But I guess that is part of why he bought the building next door.

A lot have retired or changed vocations due to the prevalence of screens and computers and the need for so many expensive tools and programs. Plus, so many shops, instead of hiring mechanics to replace them, hire techs (parts swappers) at 1/4 the hourly while increasing labor, parts markup, and shop supplies by 10%+. Technology, planned obsolescence, lack of repairability, and capitalism all conspiring to eliminate an entire workforce.

From my experience with shops in Louisiana (Greater New Orleans area) i can say that the main reason i do my own work is that i simply don't trust a single shop that I've had to deal with. More than one have caused additional damage (like backing into it and then acting like that dent was there all along). More than one have tried to scare me into paying stupid money for unnecessary repairs (like $80 for an air filter, that turned out to be clean, or my engine would explode). Prices are unreasonable. There's no trust. When deficiencies are pointed out (like leaving vacuum lines disconnected) they refuse any responsibility. I don't mind paying for quality work. But if i can't trust you not to make it worse and then lie about it then what's the point ? It's indeed a sad state of affairs

There's two decent shops near where I live, but their labor prices are off the charts. They can get away with it since ao many placea have closed or have a horrible rep. I can no longer work on my own car due to nerve damage, so I'm stuck having to pay the $129 hourly labor.
@FreudianSlipDK2 жыл бұрын
@@permanentvacation2406 It's truly unreal. And it's not brand limited. I've had horrendous experiences with Toyota, Ford, Audi, Volkswagen, GM, Chrysler, Honda, Hyundai and independent shops. Every single one of them (sometimes multiple dealerships per brand) has lied to me in one way shape or form. And most seem to exude a complete disgust for the customer. Like they don't even try and hide it. Like "here's another needy bastard to ruin my day of watching KZbin". I truly don't get it.

Part of the problem is garage mechanics typically make around $20-40/hr. They use and own their own tools ($$$ payment every month) with no benefits. In my area, "automotive technician" jobs are listed from $15/hr. One listing offered $35-55/hr, but required training and certification by Volvo.
@AdamIsUrqed2 жыл бұрын
@@frankhage1734 Wow. Auto techs here start at $8.75, and that's with tech school certification. Experience can kick it up to around $10, but rarely ever exceeds that. Working a cash register at Target or CVS pays $13, and Target will even put you through school.
