I’m so confused. How did you get your MacBook Air to hook up to all the monitors? Through the caldigit? Is the output on the caldigit thunderbolt 3? Is there an alternative for the caldigit? Also, the same method for the air will work for the pro right?
@pjoh74 жыл бұрын
He uses DisplayLink software to enable sending video output over USB 3. Then he uses USB 3.0 to Dual DisplayPort adapters to connect the monitors. The dock is for convenience (and since the M1 Macs have only two ports). I guess you could run up to 4 displays like this without the dock.
@RuslanTulupov4 жыл бұрын
For the MacBook Air I used port 1 for the one main display that is supported then I used the CalDigit to add USB 3.0 ports. You could also use a USB C Hub to add full-speed USB 3.0 ports if you need less! All of the DisplayLink adapters then went into USB 3.0. The CalDigit also charges, so the USB C hub would need to support PD (power delivery) so you can plug the charger in

Wow, this is amazing. I got nervous when looking at a docking station website that said the M1 didn't support multiple displays. QUESTION: So what I have is a 2020 macbook air (13 inch) running BigSur, a 2012 macbook pro (15.5 inch) running Catalina, and an even older Mac Mini running OS Lion (I think... the last one for the old computer games). I am looking to invest in a switcher, or two, so that I can have multiple computers running on the same set of 2-4 monitors without having to flip cords. I have seen many switchers for two computers, is it possible to create a set up for 3-4 computers, connecting 4 monitors, keyboard and mouse? It would also be acceptable if only one computer (mb Air) used all 4 monitors, and the rest just used two. SECOND QUESTION... I am thinking the upper two monitors could be touch screen (really too high to look up to, but might be nice for tracking to-do lists and calendars while standing and doing other things besides sitting at my desk. Have you attempted adding touch screen monitors to a mac set up? Thanks!

Based on the video the CalDigit station, but do I put the 4k in the display port on the station, and then get the adapter for HDMI to USB 3 from StarTech? Thanks for any and all help! Oh and in case you're wondering why 1 external monitor isn't sufficient... the laptop screen is too damn small but I have no choice (client issued laptop).
@RuslanTulupov3 жыл бұрын
Yes ma’am! That’s correct - 4K to DisplayPort and HDMI on the Acer to the USB 3.0 DisplayLink dongle. The CalDigit is not required, it’s there in the video to provide full access to all the bandwidth the Thunderbolt 3 connection offers to ensure full speed across all ports (since I needed so many). This would also work with a USB C Hub with DisplayPort and USB 3.0. Hope that helps :-)

And all need to run 4k 60hz minimum (including 5k2k with it's best resolution at 60hz). Suggest additional egpu unit if necessary. (Budget not taken into account) Total 4 Display units = [(LG 34 inch 5k2k monitor * 1) + (Dell 27 inch 4k monitor * 2) + (Another LG 34 inch 5k2k or Dell 43 inch *1)] I would really appreciate it if you help me out here. @RuslanTulupov4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely? Sorry, what kinds of ports do the 5K2K displays have? It looks like currently you could do the following for M1: TB3 [1]: LG 5K2K TB3 [2: CalDigit or USB C Hub to USB: USB 3.0 [1]: DisplayLink to HDMI (Dell) USB 3.0 [2]: DisplayLink to HDMI (Dell) Or use the USB 3.0 Dual DisplayPort adapter for the Dells. DisplayLink might not go up to 5K2K so might be worth waiting for eGPU support on Apple Silicon Macs... might be unable to use two 5K2K screens on M1 laptops... On the 16” Intel MBP it’s easier - both 5K 2K displays to TB3 (if that’s the port they use) or all of the displays to an eGPU or USB C hubs. Hope that helps

I also have the same cal digit hub you are using. I was wondering if one display could be ran natively and 1 could be ran using the STarTech USB 3.0 to dual display port adapter at 4k 60hz. It looks like I can't do that with the MacBook Air according to your video. So my other question is, does the 4k resolution using the StarTech usb 3.0 to dual display port adapter at 4k 60 look as good as running a monitor natively (without Star Tech / display link software) at 4k 60 from the MacBook Air? I'm assuming the native resolution looks somewhat better. I'm trying to decide if I want to have 2 - 4k monitors or just 1 - 4k monitor with better quality. I don't care to take a resolution hit on 1 out of 2 monitors, but I would like to get the best resolution possible out of at least 1 of the monitors. But there may not be that much noticeable difference. I just hate to spend $114 dollars on the Star Tech adapter to find out.

Do you have updates on that? I am thinking about the same thing... cal digit hub + 2 - 4k 60 monitors + StarTech usb 3.0 to dual display port adapter at 4k 60

did you find an answer for that ? i'm in the same situation, thank mate

I decided not to go that route. I ended up just using my Mac Book air with 1 monitor for a Logic Pro music computer attached to a Rolland keyboard. Then I recently just bought an additional Mac Studio to use as my main computer. It runs 2 4K monitors easy.

Awesome job! Man you are gold! Can I have a question though? Could you test simliar setup with 3-4 monitors + OBS? Managin screens, test stream/recording or something similar? I really do admire you work!

Awesome test dude! I would like to know what performance looks like when you connect 2 x 4K monitors into CalDigit dock and connect it to Mac Mini via one Thunderbolt 3 cable ( that would be my setup, soon i hope so). Once again i am so happy that i found your channel few days ago..Awesome work!

I did this! :-) Only one screen is supported by default so only 1 4K went into one of the USB C ports on the CalDigit. The rest are 4K, 2560x1440, 1080p, and all of the screens were connected to the USB 3.0 ports on the CalDigit. (🙏 ty for the kind words btw!!)

@@RuslanTulupov I have an Elgato Dock ( Thunderbolt 3 dock ), which has 2 x thunderbolt 3 ports, 1 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort. So what you are saying is, if i would to connect one external monitor into DisplayPort on dock and the other monitor into Thunderbolt 3 port ( via TB3 to HDMI dongle) also on dock and later to connect dock and Mac Mini with thunderbolt 3 cable it wouldn't work?
@RuslanTulupov4 жыл бұрын
Correct... :-( I tried that ... 4 mins in I think?

@@RuslanTulupov F***ing piece of crap..( apple i meant, not you ofc ). So i could always go with one display connected directly from Mac Mini, and my peripherals and other monitor into dock and connect that all via one TB3 cable and in theory it should work..2 x 4k monitors and all stuff necessary for work. :)

I appreciate all of the info. I am not two savvy on all of this yet, but I am getting a better understanding of it I think. The monitors have to support display link, so this limits your options for what monitors you can use. For my job I would like to have 4 curved monitors, or a 49 inch Samsung monitor with two curved monitors on top of it. Do you think this is possible? If so, any particular monitors that you think would be best for my MacBook Pro M 1 with 16 gig, 1 TB?

1) does display link support vertical monitors? 2) the monitors only stay on if u close the lid right? how do u find a docking station that charges the laptop?

I have a OWC usb c hub on my MacBook Pro. I have 1 monitor using display port. Another 2 using display port to USB c cable.. If I wanted to I am certain that these particular monitors which were made by Dell can be daisychained so my question is with the current configuration to this hub that connects to my MacBook Pro using one USB-C will the Mac mini M1 only recognize one of the monitors or will it see all see all? Also if I did connect all three monitors daisychained with one cable going display port or USB see to the Mac mini will it see all three monitors? I seen everything you put in your video but I guess if none of the stuff I listed above would work if I have three monitors that all three contain HDMI display port connections how can I connect all three to the Mac mini and exactly what adapters and hubs what I need to make it work because I really would like to get a Mac mini working in my office to replace my MacBook Pro which I would like to take to the field with me

Thanks for your video! What I havent fully figured out: Is it possible to get 3 4K Displays running with your Macbook Air? What would be your solution if you would want to switch those 3 external 4K Monitors, mouse and keybaord between one workstation and the macbook air? Do you know a KVM solution for that?

Grazie!Thank you Ruslan! I have a question, do you think will it work through USB-C hub with 2 monitors? I would like to use a 4k monitor (already included on the hub) and another FHD monitor using your workaround. Should I move to thunderbalt or can I use the ISB-C HUB?

I noticed on the plugable brand adapter, you had downloaded a driver to make it run. With the star tech I didn’t see anything else get installed. If I were just running two star tech adapters, am I installing the same driver?

Interesting! Would like to see this flight SIM demo: MAC Mini M1 to three 2K monitors (4K even better) running in ‘extended’ 5760 X 1080 mode or 4K equivalent (ie. Not mirroring) using the Display Link software (if needed) upon the minimalist of component brands used within this video. Should be a breeze for you to demo and/or please send instructions to this address (or better both). (Fav flight SIM here is X-Plane, a $59 downLoad, which runs fine on the M1 Mini.) Thanks!

Ruslan, You are my hero - I thought I have to send the MBP M1 back to Apple already - your video gives some hope :) I have two LG 24MD4KL (they have 2 x TB3 and 4xUSB-C connectors). Can you recommend which adapters or docking-station would work? preferably I'd like to use only one cable from MacBook to the "Dockingstation" and connect one screen via TB3 and the second via DisplayLink USB-C? Any idea how to achieve this? Thanks so much! Albert

I read that with a MacBook, you can drive one monitor via Thunderbolt 3 (DisplayPort) and a second monitor using the other TB3 port with an HDMI adapter on it. Did you test that configuration specifically?

Amazing Video! Question: Noticed you plugged one of the displays into the CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 (40gbps) port but you had the USB-C 10Gbps port available. Couldn't you have used that one instead and used the T3 port for some other T3 purpose - like an external Thunderbolt drive? With everything you have plugged in is the CalDigit T3 port still able to give T3 40Gbps performance from that port or would it be diminished? Also, a bit confused on the Macbook Air having a 2 display limitation but running 6 screens as long as you don't use DisplayPort or the CalDigital. Are you saying that the MBA can't detect all those screens running in addition to its own HDMI but plugging a DisplayPort into the hub triggers the detection of that additional screen and shuts it down? I guess it's the DisplayPort transmission protocol or something. Here's a tough one for ya: Mac Mini M1 specs say HDMI is 2.0. If you use a Thunderbolt 3 hub and use an adapter, is it possible to get HDMI 2.0b for HDR and HLG support? Lastly, was holding off on an M1 Mac Mini since I have a Mac Pro 2013 trash can and didn't want to lose the 2 Thunderbolt port and was worried about the M1s graphics capabilities. Would you say this display test proves the graphics of the M1 vs my old MP or are there other parameters to consider graphically before making the switch? Will all Thunderbolt 3 hubs give you only 1 Thunderbolt 3 port because it's a single daisy chain technology or is there anyway to get additional T3 ports? Would greatly appreciate your thoughts on the above. Thanks!!

" Couldn't you have used that one instead and used the T3 port for some other T3 purpose - like an external Thunderbolt drive? With everything you have plugged in is the CalDigit T3 port still able to give T3 40Gbps performance from that port or would it be diminished?" The M1 only has one bus so my understanding is all ports borrow from the total 40gbps available. You could still use the other port but they'd be competing a bit for bandwidth if all devices saturate the bus at once. "Also, a bit confused on the Macbook Air having a 2 display limitation but running 6 screens as long as you don't use DisplayPort or the CalDigital. Are you saying that the MBA can't detect all those screens running in addition to its own HDMI but plugging a DisplayPort into the hub triggers the detection of that additional screen and shuts it down? I guess it's the DisplayPort transmission protocol or something." M1 is limited to its internal display + 1 external screen by default. When I plugged in two external displays (natively) I guess the M1's programming is to block off the signal to both? At least that was my experience with the Caldigit. Not a Caldigit issue or anything. "Here's a tough one for ya: Mac Mini M1 specs say HDMI is 2.0. If you use a Thunderbolt 3 hub and use an adapter, is it possible to get HDMI 2.0b for HDR and HLG support?" I have read that HDR is possible (have not tested personally). Not sure about HLG... "Lastly, was holding off on an M1 Mac Mini since I have a Mac Pro 2013 trash can and didn't want to lose the 2 Thunderbolt port and was worried about the M1s graphics capabilities. Would you say this display test proves the graphics of the M1 vs my old MP or are there other parameters to consider graphically before making the switch? Will all Thunderbolt 3 hubs give you only 1 Thunderbolt 3 port because it's a single daisy chain technology or is there anyway to get additional T3 ports?" There's a new Thunderbolt Hub coming out! It will support splitting Thunderbolt 3 ports. Previously that was not possible and it was limited to daisy chaining. eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-thunderbolt-hub?gclid=CjwKCAiAnvj9BRA4EiwAuUMDfyESzRMkAN0mT81BCIEqFKa_8HbCXreqFCDNrpBjs_B00LoxRDe79BoCY-8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Hope this answers your questions, thanks for the comment and for watching, happy to follow up!
