Amid a win drought stretching back two and a half years, and 56 grands prix, Lewis Hamilton seriously doubted whether he’d ever taste victory in Formula 1 again.
But he has - in the most dramatic and special circumstances possible - winning the British Grand Prix, at Silverstone, the one race that matters to him more than any other.
Here are the six major factors behind Hamilton’s first F1 win since 2021.
00:00 Intro
00:27 More critical McLaren errors
03:19 Downforce differences prove crucial
05:54 Hamilton's incredible skill
06:37 Red Bull's struggles

@@martingonzalez2850 what was his mistake in this race? If McLaren puts a set of new mediums on his car after the inters came off, he likely wins the race running away. Even if they’d brought him in a lap earlier when they should have and put the softs on, he’d have been passed by both Hamilton and Verstappen before the race ended. Sure he euchred himself in Austria, but in this race his team did a Ferrari.

@@JaegerLeo And if the team hadn't screwed up his teammate's race as well he probably would have won over Oscar, being already in the lead. That a McLaren should have won and probably with a 1-2 is fairly clear, though even then not certain as the others were fast enough to be a threat. Overtaking on track in the mixed conditions is both tricky and risky, but likely required, at least for Oscar. He would end up behind a Merc in that first double stack if McLaren had done things properly - he could then have been stuck behind for quite some time.

@@kenzabel5394 I'd agree they were better that race, but not the in a league of their own better than RB and Merc have been many times in recent years. When you are only the better car across the race by the small margin with the others having good cars and good drivers anything can happen even if you run your race perfectly. Clearly McLaren did not run their race perfectly, but with such fine margin on the other cars even if they had all it takes is something tiny and unpredictable, the tiny delay to avoid the backmarker and gravel from rejoining the track at the wrong moment - anything that loses you a little time that you can't predict and suddenly you might well be behind on the track without enough extra car underneath you to do anything but push the other driver all the way to the flag (and that would be impressive with how bad the Tyres are).

Makes it seem like the win was more luck than work. For McLaren to win they not only need a near perfect weekend but they need others to make mistakes. Norris has great pace but he needs things to line up to capitalize. I'm a RB fan since Vettel's first win so I enjoy watching RB dominate but they are starting to have less and less of an advantage every weekend now. Add Checo into the mix and they are back to being a one driver team.

McLaren disappointed me today. They fumbled an easy 1 2. It was their race lose 1. Pitting Oscar late 2. Putting softs on Lando on the last stint. Instead of making decisions based on data, they let Lando choose and he always get it wrong because how can he know what's happening around him when he is busy driving. Exactly what they did that day in RUSSIA. Today Oscar was laping 1 sec faster than Lando towards the end. They should capitalise on these chances before Mercedes is fully awakened

Agreed, and while I love Lando, he hasn't had enough time at the front to develop that type of racecraft, knowledge, and decision-making that others, like Lewis have. Maybe for running 2nd or 3rd when Max was winning by 43 seconds, but not when it's down the wire. Same goes for the pitwall at McLaren too, they haven't been in this position in over a decade. Lando literally requested softs, they should have reminded him why he shouldn't. They'll get there, it's just both parties need to honestly evaluate their own failings and create a plan so that it gets better.

There needs to be communication in both directions. Many people believe that the soft was a bad tire to be on. However, what people aren't factoring in is that the soft tire was tested on dry hot surfaces, and thus was projected not to be a great tire in the dry. However, there had been rain for nearly 30 minutes, and this track was drying, and was likely cooler than normal, so the soft tires would not degrade as much as they normally would have. This is why Hamilton's performance was sustainable at the end of the race on the soft tires.

1 second ago (I looked at the dats and a lot of replays on F-1-TV for this assessment) Lewis in a coded message to Toto said "The sun is coming out" Meaning, track is dry, time to change tires. Lewis was 2 seconds behind Lando on Lap 38, when at the very last moment, Hamilton got the "Box Box". Lando was almost past the pit entrance and had to do another lap on his shot rain tires. That was critical. -- Lewis out LAP on slicks took 1.7 seconds out of Lando who was on his IN lap. . When Lando pitted on Lap 39, he missed his brake point, and the mechanics had to lift the tires. The stop cost Lando an extra 1.5 seconds, and that was basically the race. Lando came out behind Lewis and the old Pro put the hammer down Telling his pits : "Leave me to it mate" Lando was rattled. Max on Hard tires (Because Red Bull had no fresh Mediums) took 3.5 seconds out of Lando in 7 laps, and passed him with 4 laps to go for 2nd place.

I don't think so, he's only 26. I do agree next year it's probably going to be McLaren's year given their trajectory, but if Merc nails the 2026 engine and aero package I can see Max going to Mercedes and getting more championships after 2025. Toto has been quite clear he wants Max. All the important people on the grid seem to think Max alone is worth 0.3 seconds per lap compared to other drivers, regardless of the car. So anyone would offer him a contract for a killer combo of great car/great driver. I think there's more to come from him if he makes the right team choices (edit: which Vettel did not do).

I'm afraid Lando's temperament is wrong. He needs to learn how to deal with his emotions like his team mate does. He reacts in the moment emotionally and makes bad decisions. He is a very talented driver, but the winners in F1 have a degree of ice under their skin, and at the moment he is not there. He still has time to mature his race craft.

here's my list 1. Great qualifying to start 2nd crucially ahead of Lando and Max 2. Choosing more downforce than George that meant he could George overtake when it started raining and could stay ahead 3. Great decision making by the team, the pit stops timing each time was perfect 4. Great tyre management, he managed to take his softs to the end while pushing hard, without destroying them like Lando 5. Talent, He was fast and built a gap to Lando and managed to stay ahead of two faster cars i also think George retiring gave put lewis at a disadvantage as max now had to get through only Lando

Whilst I agree with some of what you say you’ve missed the one vital difference which allowed Hamilton to win. The soft tyre for the final ten laps. Pitting him when they did gave him one out lap on the fastest tyre which was the soft. He gained the vital nearly two seconds on that out lap coupled with the 1 1/2 secs Lando lost in the pit stop. This enabled Hamilton to get out in from of Lando. If either of those things hadn’t happened Hamilton would have been behind Lando and used up his softs getting by or trying to. Vercrashen would have caught them both and won the race. So the soft tyre was the only choice to win the race for Mercedes with a slower car on mediums and hards in dry conditions. You made no mention of the amazing out lap from Hamilton which got him in front, all thanks to the softs.

@@gauravmalltarlok5354yeah i was already cringing after the race thinking of all the people that are gonna say the only reason Lewis won is because George dnf‘ed. He was already ahead of him before that & was clearly showing that he was far superior in the mixed track conditions the drivers were faced with. Sure, McLaren had some blunders in there but I just as much dislike the notion that this race was mclarens to lose & Lewis wouldn’t have had the slightest shot at beating them had the strategy been executed properly. He was so much faster in that last stint on the same, one lap older tyres & could’ve definitely caught lando had he mirrored Lewis. If you can’t see that the overall performance of Hamilton was top-tier & he would’ve been fighting for the win even without strategical mistakes on McLarens behalf you‘re just blinded by an all to familiar prejudice regarding Lewis capabilities imho. That Merc was flying yesterday & Lewis execution was flawless bar none. He nearly had not a single mistake & clearly outperformed the Lando & co. - whether that be strategically or on racecraft. Keeping a cool head in really tense situations as these, changing conditions nearly by the minute, is what makes champions & elite drivers & lando, as much as I respect & am rooting for him, just can’t seem to stay calm & make the right decisions.

McLaren's mistakes were divided up differently between their two drivers. The late pit stop for Piastri was easily 100% the teams fault, and the audible on the tire choice and the botched pit stop position made those errors more like 50/50 between the team and Norris. The rain always makes the race interesting, but that's because it hurts younger inexperienced teams like McLaren.

There’s always context and in this case it was Carlos on a set of brand new Soft tyres any half decent car can get fastest lap as long as they have a new set of softs and the big boys don’t bother to go for it using the same method of Brand new soft tyres.
