Had a season pass in 1990. My mom worked downtown. I would walk over spend the day there. Probably the best times of my young childhood. Loved the rides. Pretty upset about it getting closed.
@allisonthomas9959 ай бұрын
My mom grew up going to that park and her two favorite rides were Texas Cyclone and Greezed lighting she was wondering what happened to the park so I showed her the two videos of the park and it really sparked a idea for me to find something from the park to keep it alive and i found a brochure of the park from 1979 off of eBay three years ago for twenty bucks and the look on her face when i gave it to her as a BD gift was amazing she loved it a lot.

I cried so hard when it closed. I grew up there and have so many childhood and adolescent memories of my beloved Astroworld. I remember waiting in line for Texas Cyclone and looking at all the "graffiti" people wrote on the railing with their pens, lol. I'm sure I left my mark there, too. My dad and I would bring a washcloth with us and drag it in the water while we ride the bamboo shoot, being careful not to smash our hands as that was part of the fun. That wet rag kept us cooled off as we walked around. They had the best fries all over and amazing funnel cake in the German area. They had a full biergarten! I can hear, see, smell, and feel and taste it all right here. Thank you for the video and the trip down memory lane. Kenny Ryman has a KZbin channel with tons of Astroworld videos he took. He worked there as well. I always wanted to be one of those teenagers or college kids that worked there. 🥰

I was able to visit Astroworld during the final few years. Ultra Twister was probably the most unique ride at the time. Ultimately the lack of a parking agreement with the Astrodome may have been the tipping point towards the park being sold. Now all I have are a few souvenirs including brochures, a wall calendar, and a 2004 souvenir cup! (SF parks' souvenir bottles were custom for each park back then.)
@selanryn5849 Жыл бұрын
Well, they went and built that whole new NFL stadium in the Astrodome parking lot, which really did not help the already-bad parking situation. Looking back, probably should have kept Astroworld and let the Texans go to San Antonio and the Alamodome. Houston just has no luck with pro football teams.

Thanks for the feedback. This was a difficult decision for me, but I thought my Geauga Lake documentary was long enough, and that anything longer would have to be split up. If I kept both parts of this video together, it would be over a half hour long. I know there are people who would have no problem with watching a 30 minute video, but for most, dividing it up into smaller videos is more manageable. Future documentary videos will be one part only.

My heyday at Astroworld was 1978-1990, when I was 8-20, though I have memories of the park from both earlier and later. I remember being very young riding the Serpentine with my Mom, probably about 1974. I also remember the Spinning Barrell, which would spin so fast the occupants of the chamber would stick to the walls! That one did not last long, as I recall. I remember the Wacky Shack, the Alpine Sleigh Ride with its dwarf miners and cool AC, and all the rides seen in the video. The XLR8 was too slow for my tastes! The Sky Screamer was terrifying. My favorite coaster was the Excalibur, because it was fast but not TOO fast! The Cyclone would wrench your neck and rattle your bones. My sister loved Greased Lightnin' but I thought it was too short. In 1990 the Viper really impressed me, and whenever I visited from college I would be sure to take my girlfriend to the park, and we would ride the Viper over and over. Years and years of memories here.

In 1970 MASH director Robert Altman filmed the strange movie Brewster McCloud around Houston including Astroworld. My friends and I went to Astroworld during filming and, walking along, saw one of the film’s stars. He had played the role of Painless in the MASH movie. As he passed by, I casually said “Hi, Painless.” What a big smile when he realized he’d been recognized! My Astroworld Days ended when Six Flags took over, although I first met Weird Al and his band there in the early 1990’s. It was no reserved seating at the Al show, so I figured I’d never get a good seat. I told some young guys that I’d pay $20 if they saved me a seat up front. To my surprise, after the big crowd roared in, I saw one young man in the second row, indicating he saved that seat for me. Best $20 ever spent!

AstroWorld was always enjoyable. I grew up back and forth between the Natti and Houston which means I also went to both parks of Kings Island and AstroWorld. I'd have to rate both parks about an equal similarity except for one thing. The Cyclone was fun. But it was no where near the #1 coaster as it claimed back in the day. I know every park likes to say their's is the best coaster, however the Cyclone couldn't compare to the Beast at Kings Island. Much Bigger 1st and 2nd Hills and a longer ride. I worked at Astroworld from 1980-1988, 7 operating seasons. I skipped the 1984 season. The XLR8 coaster was actually designed to go much faster than its relatively slow final speed. What happened was during the one of the coaster's trial runs, a rides supervisor ran the coaster excessively fast (by disabling the trim brakes all throughout the ride). Basically, it blew past the second lift. As a result of the overly excessive speed the coaster achieved, the front of the coaster slammed into one of the pylons and cracked the front of the ride and damaged part of the queue house. Thankfully, the coaster was empty. However, we would eventually come to find that it wasn't a design flaw. Initially, I understand this supervisor had lied to management about how the accident occurred. Thinking it was a design flaw, the park contracted to have some of the pylons changed to slow the ride down to 'prevent' a recurrence of that event. This 'accident' almost threatened to not allow the coaster to open. What happened next was ... that ride supervisor had taken photos (known as selfies today) of what happened and this person began circulating them around the park employees 6-12 months later. This supervisor was actually proud of it and stupidly began passing the photos around for all the world to see. Yes, I got to see them. Eventually the truth surfaced even among the upper management. Unfortunately, the damage was already done (literally). The coaster's damaged car (and the queue house) was repaired and part of the ride was redesigned to 'slow the ride' and prevent it from going too fast thus avoiding any other ill-fated runs. I believe additional trim brakes were also added to slow the ride further. It was definitely not a design flaw that caused that 'accident'. This wasn't the only ride incident caused by this supervisor. Prior to XLR8, this supervisor had bumped trains in the queue house at Excalibur (causing a few guests to have chipped teeth). This supervisor was also reckless driving a number of other coasters including the Texas Cyclone. Unfortunately, even after this information came to light, the supervisor wasn't fired. Instead, this person was transferred to the Shows department and allowed to remain a supervisor. We all regarded this person as a bit mentally challenged at this point, but Astroworld chose not to take action against this employee. Note that even before the XLR8 incident, this supervisor was already known for being reckless while driving rides. Why this person was not investigated or fired after what happened on XLR8, I don't know.

While Thunder River might have been universally loved by guests, it was universally hated by people who had to work it. While XLR8 may not have had a design flaw, Thunder River most certainly did... and quite a number of them, which is why we hated working this ride. I even have a scar left over from helping to operate that ride. The problem was the wild rapids were not contained and the the water currents would end up pooling into eddies which boats would get stuck swirling around in. Another boat would come along, break up the eddie and both would get stuck trying to get past a small neck in the rapids. We as ride operators would have to let the ride driver know to stop sending boats and then a number of us would all jump on the boats and try to get them unstuck. We called these 'jam ups'. Let's just say that from 1980-1981, that's pretty much all we did regularly. This was not only dangerous for us, there were times where the boats appeared to be sinking. Thankfully, after 5-8 minutes we could usually get the boats free and on their way. Eventually, Intamin and the park engineers devised a way to break up the eddies by shooting water streams and by carefully adding directed wood planks so boats wouldn't pool and would keep moving on their own. It took several years before this 'prototype' worked out its kinks. I was never fond of operating this ride. Having to jump into the water or on boats regularly was not exactly my idea of fun at the workplace.

Down here in Houston we have alot of things but.... it's still a saddens we have down here for fun times uk. We need an astro world back. They had Grad Night at Astroworld. I got to go twice. We got season passes for at least four years in a row as kids. Also to Water World. It was fun times. The Ultra Twister was great because that first drop was a climb up and the car always lingered for a good few seconds before it dropped. Of course the favorite of most people was Greased Lightning. Quick and fun.

Six Flags have destroyed or ruined more parks than imaginable. If you like Darien lake or frontier city enjoy while you can since six flags took over this year coming up.
