SixBlindKids - Obed - Casting For New Orthotics (AFOs/Leg Braces)

Obed, who was born blind without eyes (bilateral anophthalmia), and who also has cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, and other conditions, is at the Hanger Clinic getting his legs cast for a new set of AFOs (ankle foot orthotics), also called "leg braces". The AFOs keep his ankles in a neutral (90 degree) position and allow him to walk without walking on his toes. Obed, like many kids with cerebral palsy and autism, need AFOs to train their leg and ankle muscles and to assist them in walking correctly.
Once a cast is created, the AFOs are molded and built off-site, and then the are fitted to Obed's feet and legs and feet. Obed needs a new pair of orthotics about once a year as his feet and legs grow. The orthotics slip into a pair of shoes, sized to accommodate both the foot and the orthotics. This brand of shoes that Mom likes and mentions in the video is called Keeping Pace, www.keepingpace.... Hey I just have a little message for the whole family, but especially for Hannah. So I just turned 23 a few days ago and I've recently been feeling a lot of anxiety about getting older. My personality and a lot of my interests are still what you'd call "childlike". Like I'm told I still have that disposition that kids have that you're supposed to ditch in order to "grow up". So I've been feeling a lot of pressure to conform with what society says people my age are supposed to be. But seeing Hannah, who's a year older than me and still full of that youthful wonder, has made me feel a whole lot better about the whole growing up thing. So thanks Hannah

I think that it’s important for care providers and medical personelle to verbally warn/ communicate everything to the child they are working on wether or not you Er a response. I ALWAYS assume full comprehension and want to show respect always!

My son also had to wear casts. From 5 days after birth up until he was almost 3 months old. Now he has been wearing his AFO'S for about 3 1/2 months 23 hours a day. Next week we will finally be able to be in 12 hour wear! It is definitely a journey to go through❤ Love and happiness to your family from ours!

my mom works as an IE(H)P and I have her watch some of these with me cause we enjoy your personality and family so much. she wanted me to tell you "thank you for being such an understanding, loving parent. IEP(H)S don't get paid very much barely anything really.,The parents,(not all) can be very verbally abusive to them, when they r very truly trien their best with, every child since there are so many. they all juat want to help. she has hope seeing a parent like you who understands and has compassion to understand how hard it can be and the fact that you work with the helpers together instead of demanding things and being beligerant. so ty from my mama dukes ps. lol right hasn't our weather truly been crazy we've had 4 seasons in a week lol DMV go home you'd drunk. xoxo love from Maryland.

I wear an orthopedic on my right foot/leg. I wouldn’t be able to walk if I didn’t have my brace! I was born with right clubbed foot and later about 9yoa diagnosed with leg perthesis on my right side. Love your video! I adopted my daughter who has spina bifida and she did casting ( worked great for her too! ) and wears afos. She’s not a walker- she wheels, though. She always loved the process of new afos and they would let her help apply the cast, etc. She is 19 now and doing great. I wish more people realized how utterly amazing and wonderful it is to adopt a child with disabilities- not easy, but so wonderful.

We need to be more like Obed. You would think being completely blind and autistic could cause some anxiety when doing things like this. Because they could possibly have that fear of “what if it hurts?” Especially as a blind person, you can’t see what a nurse or a doctor or a therapist is coming up to you with. But Obed is enjoying every minute of it. And yes, I love sensory input too just like Obed.
