IMO the issue with both the data books and the Light Novels is twofold. 1) Fans take what are hyperbole statements at face value like how "Kurama could reduce the entire world to Ash" 2) They contradict their own logic and that of the source material. Recently one came out to do with the nature of Bijuu Reincarnation and how 'it usually takes several thousand years.' That is doubly stupid as not only have both instances we have seen in the series took 2/3 years, but the Bijuu are less than 1000 years old. Secondly, how on the one hand they will say "Naruto is stronger than Kaguya" and then two pages later go "at max power Naruto could only destroy a continent."

I agree, asian language uses a lot of hyperboles compared to english, you just can't take lots of concepts literally, not to mention some words are also lost in translation because there is not an exact word for it in english. I think no one should use anything outside of the actual manga, straight up. Thats the only primary source. You can bring up stuff like the itachi novels that suck him off constantly or the clearly just thrown together for a quick buck databooks, but they are only given legitimacy by being "official", which is also true of the naruto anime figurine on my desk but i wouldnt use it as a primary source on naruto. Even being written by kishimoto is, in my opinion, not enough to be anything but a secondary source. And boruto is even worse, because no way kishimoto cares at all about being consistent with naruto, if he even remembers half of it at this point, yet people act like everything in boruto should be treated as fact when discussing naruto chapters written decades (plural!) before the boruto chapter they are citing. And all the translation issues we have when dealing with a series not originally in english are made even worse when looking at these secondary sources that are as you point out often not even officially translated. And the worst thing is that regardless of all that, people still mostly fuck up by citing flowery bullshit language clearly just used to randomly hype up a character. All these far more real issues with citing these books or other secondary sources dont even matter half the time cuz ppl see "temari is as mighty as a storm" or something and start trying to figure out how powerful a whole storm would be compacted into a human woman, like fucking idiots

I think the attitude we should have towards databook statements is that we accept them to be true unless the manga shows them to be otherwise. This seems like the most consistent way to look at it because the manga is seen as the primary canon and the databooks are a secondary canon.

I think above all of that, critical thinking should be employed as much as possible. This is particularly because even the primary canon can contradict itself. If people think there is or isn't a reasonable contradiction, then they should be able to at least articulate why in their minds and make a reasonable case for it when they decide to enter an argument on the subject.

He's seen the strongest shinobi throughout history, including Hashirama and Madara. He would be THE expert on what shinobi are physically capable of. So yeah, Kirin is not lightspeed. The lightning is just a crap ton of ordinary lighting that Sasuke amassed and directs at his enemy. He doesn't even shoot the lightning at a target, allowing for the argument that he increased the lightning's velocity. This isn't the only technique that uses nateral phenomena as a weapon and causes it to take on animalistic form in the process. Guy's phenomena when using the gates are another example.

Agreed. Also, 1/1000 of a second isn't speed, it's just time. For it to be speed, it has to be distance over time. If you try to calc the Kirin moving from the base of the cloud to Itachi's position in 1/1000 of a second it's nowhere near light speed. I tried to calc it extremely generously once, assuming it travelled from the top of the cloud, putting that at like 20k feet based on an exaggeration of the highest cumulonimbus clouds found IRL, and it was still an order of magnitude slower.

When he creates fireballs by punching in 6th gate, that's him genuinly punching so fast his fists ignite the air. When he creates those shockwaves in 7th gate, that's genuine air pressure. Not chakra. The fact it was natural was the key plotpoint as to why he beat Kisame. Naturally, his includes everything in 8th gate, too.

Questions about speed. I heard what you said about kirin and how black zetsu has never seen kirin before so he doesn’t know it’s light speed, but black zetsu does say that lighting is “too fast to dodge” not; too fast for a crippled itachi to dodge, he’s stating it as an objective fact, so wouldn’t this still put pretty much every character up to this point sub lighting speed. Also since the manga comes out before the data books, wouldn’t this be kishimotos thoughts and exposition to the audience as well. Plus we’ve never seen the feat of kakashi cutting lighting and kakashi would still scale below itachi. Second speed question. In the anime/manga the raikages assistant has a jutsu that transports things at the speed of light, but when she uses it on the Kage she says that a human body can’t travel at that speed or they would be torn apart, the only people who can survive are people like the raikage with the lighting cloak durability or Tsunade to heal all the damage. Wouldn’t this also mean that anyone without a lighting cloak or 100 healings couldn’t move at light speed, or they would die?

I personally dont. Much like when I, for fun, compare shounen series. I take the biggest thing they’ve done and go from there. The issue is that dragon ball and Naruto don’t have the exact same power systems. In dragon ball its simple. Bigger BP = bigger ki = stronger. Naruto is. A bit more complex. Not only are there type advantages to consider but also the fact that more chakra doesn’t equal physical stats. Mainly because well. Chakra isn’t just there. It’s moulded. It needs to be created before it can be used. Not only that but it’s how chakra is used. Sakura has the smallest amount of chakra in all of Team 7 but her control is excellent. She can hit things EXTREMELY hard but does that mean she can consistently life that same weight? Because of that all. I just don’t bother scaling anymore. People get moody and get upset and it’s not worth it. It reminds me of Dc vs Marvel. Yes they’re on a similar planet called Earth but there’s been bits where dc’s earth is bigger than marvel’s earth. I doubt its canon enough but it’s my point. One manga series’ earth just may not be the same size as another’s earths.

When discussing these hypotheticals, stuff like "speed blitz" or "building level fodder" gets thrown around allot to shut down any arguement, completely ignoring power systems and abilities and how they would interact. Stats are important, but if the character can regenerate extremely quickly to absurd levels for example, well ap only goes so far to where you are doing more damage to the environment than the person. People lack critical thinking in general when it comes to this stuff, planet size is important especially when talking about planetary fighters. Blowing up Japan is not the same country lv feat as blowing up Russia. Striking strength is not lifting strength, reaction speed is not travel speed. Idk it's definitely off topic from databooks just being unreliable but I wanted to wholeheartedly tell you I agree.

I am am not sure it is metaphorical, it could just be their preferred phrasing. 11:55 Tō no Sho actually has a massive error as it stated Hiraishin is Minato's original jutsu. Simply cleared up by the fact the databooks are only correct up to the point of release, and it was changed to Tobirama later. Also not an error, but Tō no Sho correctly dates the battle of Kannabi Bridge to 13 years ago, making Kakashi twelve therein, which many people contest.

The main problem is the inconsistency with which people utilize the statements on these books. People will handwave away some statements and act like others are fact just based on what they wanna say. There’s no reason to say that Kirin is lightspeed over thunder speed because the databook says so. The databooks are mostly hyperbole and kishimoto hyping up things. Even the statement that the charts are an individual assessment is wrong, kid Sasuke is nowhere NEAR the peak of his speed, but the book would say otherwise. It’s all just story devices, and honestly that extends to a lot of what characters say in the story as well

When it comes to "powerscaling" theres exactly one meaningful position and everything else is garbo, which is: "the narrative trumps everything and the author does whatever he wants". For example: Theres no way Madara/Hashirama would ever lose a battle to anyone but Sasuke or Naruto (spare me with the Kaguya bs, Kaguya is a joke character), simply because the narrative dictates it. They are the OG God of Shinobi and pretty much meant to be equals. Two sides of the same coin, just like Naruto and Sasuke are supposed to be. But Naruto and Sasuke are Hashirama/Madara 2.0, they are an upgrade, so its just makes sense for them to be able to beat them. Simply because the narrative implies as much. Theres no point at all in asking "would Juubito win against Jubidara", because he clearly wouldnt. Not based on statements, not based on feats, but based on narrative. Thats why Jubito doesnt have Kamui, thats why Madara has Susanoo without having eyes, thats why Madara can reverse-Jutsu his ass out of Edo-Tensei, just like Hashirama could if he just wanted. There are a million plot holes, which only exist because the author wanted something to happen because it fits the narrative he wants to portray. Thats also why Zetsu was able to kill Madara in the most bs turn of events ever, thats why u never see a Sannin defeat another Sannin, thats why Edo-Tensei got retconned... the list is endless. The author decides how the story goes and if he wants some random ass character to be able to obliterate the whole world by farting a little to loudly the author will write exactly this into the story and this will be true for all eternity for all fiction.

Not only that, the series literally contradicts light speed characters. Mabui's technique Heavenly Transfer is a technique that transfers things at light speed. They made a big deal about it saying no living being can travel at light speed. The Raikage survived because of his durability but Tsunade was injured. Tsunade was way stronger and more durable than Haku and Part 1 Naruto so if Part 1 Naruto was light speed, he would have been damaged.

For the Gai point, Ch 119 is after the Chunin Exams Prelims so you could apply all of the feats and assumptions about Lee to Gai and get him above Kakashi that way. Remember, Kakashi thought it necessary to unveil his Sharingan for Lee and that was when he just thought Lee was only going to use 3 gates. Base Gai was already shown above both Weightless Lee and Weighted Lee(1st Gate) as well as him moving just as fast as the other Jonin to restrain Neji, who Lee and Gai both thought Lee would need the Hidden Lotus(3/4 gates) to beat anyway.

Most of this seems really consistent and a reading-focus issue. Temari is beings called a tornado and she is strong it talks about her being almost untouchable. Raikage makes sense cause he’s compared to yellow flash. Kirin is perfect. Since first arc you can infuse chakra into natural elements to make them faster or stronger. Zetsu only says lightning is faster than sound and the area it covers is too wide ranged . Haku is also perfect. His mental amps make him blitz kakashi but it also says it’s “literal light speed movement” indicating you have to have special chakra amps to see him at all through the mirrors so the two tomoe sharingan sees light speed minimum.

If you want a possible extra support, in Ch91, Kubo makes an entirely separate panel to show that Uryu out paced his own shadow. Basically, before light could "erase" his shadow he was already gone.

Databooks are full of hyperboles and similes in general. Manga is the only one you can trust and the jutsu feat of light fang is not stated AT ALL. Sasuke's Amenotejikara chidori in the final fight was sensed by Naruto but even so he took the hit....what does that tell you? It means Light Fang is not lightspeed. And aside from Kirin, correct me if I'm wrong, that the feat of lightspeed has ever mentioned and there's no precedent that Six Paths Sage Mode can evade a lightspeed attack when a Limbo that Naruto can detect attacked him and sent him flying. Scaling characters as planet busters....continent level....lightspeed are all stupid constructs and limits a character....I'm not saying that it's not important to scale a character level but don't be reliant on it. he
