In most stage productions (where Rolf isnt an ass) the song is mutually playful and tongue-in-cheek, like they're both making fun of social expectations. But given Rolf's character in the film, it gives the impression he's being sincere while she is just playing along.

Dan Truhitte is the actor who played Rolf in this movie. He was also my voice teacher throughout high school(he now lives in NC), and he changed my life for the better! He even sang "16 Going on 17" to me when I turned 16. He's a wonderful man and I owe him so much for helping me find confidence as a singer and as a person. ❤️ Last I heard, he's still teaching voice lessons, and that makes me so happy!

@flutenanyidk1806 Жыл бұрын
@@cerebrummaximus3762 @lessismore8533 Specifically he's talking about how he's "older and wiser" than she is, but at this age range, it's less about age in a sense and more about lived experiences. I have a couple of friends that are two years older than me (I'm 18 now) and one of them is about in the same stage of life that I am, except she bought her first car. She basically has little to no clue what she's doing, so I don't usually ask her for advice regarding life. The other one is married with her own apartment. I usually ask HER when I need help with how credit cards work, or ideas for how to pay for college, or realistic estimates on how much rent is on average, or anything like that. 16-18 is a range where a lot happens in a short amount of time. Most people, when they turn 16, are juniors or sophomores in high school. They're kind of just trying to get through life, probably started their first job already if they hadn't two years ago, and are learning to drive. This is also the time that a lot of kids open up their first debit card so they can make purchases online without parental consent. 17 is kind of like 16 except your parents usually let you do more things by yourself. 18 is where you usually start to look for your first full-time job, decide what you want to do for higher education, open your first credit card, and basically start preparing yourself to be on your own. We have proof that Liesel lives with her dad, is probably still going to school, and is VERY wealthy. Making her almost entirely ignorant to how finances work, (although she may not need this information due to the fact that women usually stayed at home to raise children during this time and never needed to work), she's probably not super aware of the rest of the world because she's upper-class, and because somewhat controlling/red-flaggy boyfriend here is a postal boy, she's probably not thinking about the fact that a lot of his interest in her could be related to money. What we know about him is he does have a full-time job. We don't know if he lives on his own, but there's a 50/50 chance he _might._ If this is the case, he may genuinely be a little more experienced and aware of the world than she is, but we don't know for sure. He _might_ be someone who could offer Liesel decent advice on life, however, in this time period he may not have been able to afford higher education due to it majorly being considered an upper-crust luxury, so we actually don't know if he ever graduated or will graduate high school. (He could have a summer birthday.) That being said, assuming that Liesel has received higher education of the time, he would have the street smarts, but likely she's way more aware of what's happening outside of Austria and the war, which would make her much more equipped to run from it. So, there's potential for this dynamic being mutually beneficial, but honestly with the way he's talking there are a lot of... potential red flags. Ya know, "you don't know what you're doing but I can save you!" The fact that Liesel doesn't notice how potentially alarming these statements could be is also a case for how inexperienced she is. He's kind of putting words into her mouth, even though Liesel seems perfectly confident in this song. Notice how she mostly goes along with it to please him? Also just the line, "you *need* someone older and wiser telling you what to do." However, this is making a lot of assumptions. Honestly a lot of that comment was me looking at my behavior as someone of that age. I knew that I wasn't prepared to enter adulthood yet-- heck, I'm still not-- and that the future was zooming toward me like a train. This song is kind of saying they both feel like they know everything, which is common in this age range, while it's clear they haven't had as much lived experience to live up to that statement. I hope that my argument makes sense....

Fun fact. In an early take the costumers forgot to put in Charmian Carr's anti-slip pads, and she slipped off one of the benches and went right through a glass panel. No serious injuries, but they had to wrap up her foot, and she completed the rest of the scene on an injured ankle. To anybody with dance experience, you'd know it must have been agonizing. To her credit, she finished it. In older cuts of the film, you can see the cast, but when it was put on DVD in the 90s, it was edited out so you can't tell.

@alison Barlow I don't know how old you are, but this is one of those songs that you take literally when you watch it as a child, and then when you're an adult you realize both of them are not what they claim, and the lyrics are ironic. He's putting on a front of knowing what he's doing because he's older, when in reality he's scared to kiss her and has no idea what he's doing. She's putting on a front of being naive and easy for him to make a move on, but the reality is she knows exactly what she's doing and that she's far more mature than him. It's also a reference to traditional male/female social structure, where the men appear to dominate the women, but the women are the ones actually pulling the strings.
@ralphralpherson94412 жыл бұрын
Thats the whole irony of the song. It's meant to be ironic in that way. She's the aggressive man and he's the shy girl. But his ego thinks it's the other way around and she's indulging him.

The whole scene is portrayed as a beautifully innocent moment in time for two teenagers falling in love. She is smitten, as is he, and the song is a tribute to youthful naivete that everyone eventually grows out of at some point. Adults would scoff at the notion that "seventeen-going-on-eighteen" is any wiser than "sixteen-going-on-seventeen," just as they might scoff at the purity of young love like this.

@@alexschalk5439 They were both being playful - he wasn't actually talking down to her. He says "timid and shy and scared are you" while she's the one who's all over him. The message of the scene was that she was young and innocent, and wasn't aware of the dangers of just falling in love with a man and going for him. Watch how he refuses her several attempts at making the situation intimate. He's not being a dick in this scene, he does love her but knows that she is too young for them to do anything. Him being a year older does mean something - it implies that he's older so he can better understand the gravity of his decisions.

Charmaine Carr was not only beautiful but also had an amazing magnetic voice. Her beautiful voice reminds me of Karen Carpenter, my favorite singer. It's our loss she chose to leave the entertainment business. However it's good for her to pursue her passion in interior design. Wish her peace and happiness in heaven.

It's cool because in the instrumental section, Irwin Kostal actually goes through multiple different dances: 3:15 contredanse, 3:37 the waltz, 3:40 the polka.

well definitely 'timid' and 'shy' and yet so bold with her feelings for rolf XD but honestly this is such an adorable song and quite funny

When this was filmed (in 1964) she was 21 going on 22, and he was 20 going on 21. So actually she was older than him :-) R.I.P. Charmian

And Julie Andrews was not much older than both of them at the age of 28 . It’s still such an endearing and entertaining movie . I love it . Rest In Peace Charmian .

@@gracepuckett8310 she injured her ankle as she crashed through the glass doing this . If you look closely in the original movie , you’ll see her bandage under her hose . When they updated the film and used modern technology, they were able to blur out the look of the bandage .

The way she says “timid” here, 2:45 , along with his body language shows that she changed the stance it the argument and it’s great
