Everybody's talking about the guy's age, but what's really underrated here is that they did all this on an uneven surface full of fake trees, vegetation, and rocks. One false step could have scuttled the whole performance, particularly when he leaped from the top of the "hill" to the bottom of the "hill" and she pirouetted on a "rock."

Everyone comparing the movie from this version is forgetting the script is very different. All the actors are doing this live, like a high school musical. They can only do so much with the scenes. If they mess up, they keep going. Go watch the UK version with Kara Tointon. (Which in my opinion is 10000% better.) The little girl who played Marta trips and Kara (Maria) ad libs “Are you okay Marta?” There are also scenes where she gets excited and other actors have to put hands on her shoulders to calm her down. She is literally acting like a seven year old, as she is. Kara forgot some lines, other characters go with the flow. (Ex: Maria is supposed to say “That’s a good age to be, eleven...almost.” Instead Marta says her line a little early. Etc ...) In the lonely goatherd song, Kara has a small issue putting the hat on Gretl. Stuff like that. Still The show goes on... I only noticed these, because I did theatre and memorize scenes. So comparing the Live! Version to the movie isn’t fair. Two totally different scripts, sets etc ...
