I began enjoying sixto 42 years ago. Have a few original vinyls. Could listen and watch him all day. Such a talent in every way and a beautiful soul. Intelligent and humble. I would have loved to have a chat with him. RIP Sir. Love you forever. 💜💜💜

I am sitting here in utter disbelief. I simply can't comprehend how this can happen. Rodriguez has always been a staple in music collections with the likes of Rolling Stones, Dylan, Van Morrison, Doors, Eagles. Name a classic and Rodriguez has always nestled within such greats if not eclipse many same such greats. I am both exhilarated that he finally can understand the power and strength he has given to the world and in our individual lives, and sad that he was unaware for so long. Such words!

It is far too often in this world that art is rewarded before the artist himself has lived long enough to respect the gift of acclimation... Sixto Rodriguez is the greatest example of an artist who sees not what he has given, but what it has returned... So few ever get to see the world as they have changed it through the eyes of age, and Rodriguez has earned every cheer, every smile and every tear shed of his contribution to this world... For that, we can all be grateful...

The very name 'Sixto' puts me in mind of the fact that the sixties & early seventies (not unlike this era in some respects) was a very tumultuous time (I know, I was there, although a lot of it, in retrospect, seems kinda blurry ;)...Think of all the so-called stars, talented artists, from that period, who died at age 27...The Chinese have a saying, 'may you be cursed to live in interesting times'... which puts me in mind of Dylan's 'The Times They Are A Chang'in'...You ride that dragon , that was the Woodstock & Vietnam era, add youth & celebrity status, & it's a killer... Or as Robbie Robertson put it, 'a goddam impossible way of life'... when life becomes impossible, you die, simple as that... Rodriguez didn't die, but he sure paid his dues, & you're right, he earned his celebrity status... He worked in the mean streets of Detroit, a living breathing metaphor for the rampant decay that is urban America, renovating old buildings, breathing in Asbestos dust...year after year, decade after decade... How did he survive that with vocal chords still intact?... 'I WONDER...' P.S.: His daughter is beautiful & very insightful, like her dad...PEACE OUT

Wooooowwww!. This might be the best version of Like a Rolling Stone ever recorded. The keyboardist and the backing guitar deserve double deserts tonight. I saw the documentary last night; was waiting to see it years ago. Absolutely incredible story, that a guy that sold a couple dozen albums in the US sold half a million or more album in RSA. Then believed to be dead for well over 25 years. Then found when his daughter saw something on the Internet. Then gets hooked up with his most loyal fans. Then performs for a week in RSA. Goes back to his shack in Detroit. And then gets revived 15 years later. Yeah, right. And he can still perform. Nice story.

I agree but in saying more, it is refreshing to encounter a musician with such humility and joyous presence. In a business which is forever driven by ego, narcissism and selfish ambitions to listen, to experience Rodriguez is like encountering an enlightened being. Beautiful.. thank you for such wonderful musicianship and for a wonder life to share with us all who listen and watch.

I too have just finished watching "Searching for Sugar Man". The premise of the movie is mind boggling. Rodriguez is the most humble of men. I've never heard of him, yet he took the people of South Africa through tumultuous times of apartheid, censorship, and military state actions. We have a great man, living in our own city of Detroit, yet he is not acknowledged here. I love his voice, and admire his humbleness.

I used to listen to Rodriguez back in the 70s. My cousin had the albums and I thought he was pretty cool then. In a way the time capsule he hid away in all those years protected him and his art, bringing him into a new age with his values and integrity intact. Now we can all see that he is a truly remarkable artist and human being. His modesty, sincerity and profundity are in such stark contrast to today's bombastic overblown egomaniacs with their vile turgid muzak.

Let me mention my own sequence of doing things. I read somewhere that a documentary about a potential hidden gem signer is made. Instead of finding out the documentary and using it as a step to discover the man and his music, I listened to Sixto Rodriguez Cold Fact album on KZbin. This is about 5 years ago. It was so easy to fall in love with Rodriguez's music permanently. I have watched the documentary in May 2019 (yesterday actually). I am happy about not wasting a minute in starting listening to his music.

Love this guy ! He's an example of what music appreciators (no, not bootleggers) can do to bring a talented musician to the public & ultimately afford him the gratitude & accolades he & his music & their journey deserves. We passed around cassettes taken from an album & shared his music with our friends until many knew him. He became a light to us lities (South African slang for younger people), during our own battle against the repulsive regime we were shackled to & suppost to serve by giving our life & souls to it's military & it's policies. Amongst other artists Rodriguez' music became one of our torches against the regime. The album Cold Fact our voice in the pending darkness & now our anthem at having been delivered to the light within us & what unity can do. Unfortunately our present government seems heel bent on ling their pockets at the expense of the people. Another battle to overcome the New Oppressors will have to begin. What's that about, "Better the devil you know".....

I saw Bob Dylan with Joan Baez in concert in 1965 at the Seattle Center Arena. Went to see Joan Baez. Never heard Bob Dylan. After hearing Dylan went out and bought all his records and shortly thereafter Dylan released "Bringing It All Back Home" which included many of the songs he sang. Never been the same since. But, Rodriquez is a better poet, truly sincere and humble. Dylan became a money-seeking hypocrite. What a difference! Rodriquez is the real thing and still can sing, even after 70.

I am a great, great fan of Dylan. No confusion about it. I do admit being a fan of Dylan takes a little bit of toll on my conscience. On the other hand though, Sixto Rodriguez can be loved for who he is. I have immense respect for Dylan's work but I would rate Rodriguez higher than Dylan because of the person Rodriguez is. You know what, work of Rodriguez is by no measure littler than Dylan's in terms of depth. It is sheer volume and longevity of Dylan's career that gives him a prominent place in the league of songwriters and influential personalities. But I am always shy of professing openly as a Dylan crazy because he is cynical to a sickening degree, unreal, insincere, and quite arrogant too. No offense meant here.

Hi Douglas, Great that you saw Dylan in 1965 must have been great. I got to see him in 1984 in Slane Castle. I was disappointed but that was because I didn’t understand why he was acting the way he was.. Recently I saw the film “Rolling Thunder” and it shed a lot of light on his behavior and the hard road he traveled to move on his career from he wanted him to do and to what we were expecting from him. He’s not as you described him in my opinion. You are a bit harsh maybe... “No direction home” is another film that may help you understand my view. Another film that gives perspective and understanding is “I’m not there”. Enjoy if you can find the time. Regarding Sexto, what a sad but heart warming story of an artist who should have been allowed us to share so much more....

I needed someone NEW to look up to! All my heroes have failed, although it is to be expected when you are a dunk musician/artist! This guy is 70 and still worthy! To think if I hadn't looked up documentaries sort of like The Story of anvil, Death, and American Movie... :D

Aπίστευτο!!! και πάλι τα Σέβη μου!>>> I'm very touched from the life of this wonderful man!! I saw very recently the documantary film, "searching for Sugar Man", and Ι couldn't keep my tears! Tears of Hapiness, sadness... and all the feelings together!! RESPECT for all the way of his life! So famous and he didn'd know it!!! And the sales of his record were far away even from Elvis Prieley's!!!! Unbelievable!!!! My RESPECT again!!
