Light work is an art and something that requires a lot of sensitivity. in color photos we must have the knowledge of color composition and in black and white photos we must have the same knowledge, but in grayscales. his work Peter Coulson with black and white is fantastic. Glad you made this video Peter Coulson! Its been emphasized how the larger the light source the softer it gets or seems, but at the same time someone like You with so much experience can make it work regardless. Good that you also specified that when you travel the Gear is smaller but still can get the same effect. Thank you so much for taking the time and show us so much great technique in your wonderful channel!

But the size of soft boxes DOES actually matter. Yes, you get the same shadows BUT the quality of the light in the transitions and how diffuse the shadows are IS ABSOLUTELY impacted by the size of the soft box. I upgraded from 36" square to 60" octagonal soft boxes awhile back and absolutely noticed the difference in the light. I found the exact same style photo with the same lighting setup but with the larger soft boxes qualitatively looked better. Now, true, sometimes you may intentionally want the effect of a smaller soft box, but in many cases larger soft boxes will result in higher quality light. Plus, of course, larger boxes allows you to light larger spaces more evenly if you need to get more people into the shot.

Thanks Peter. I am starting to rent a studio space that doesn’t have much equipment so it is interesting to see how the effects are achieved with a suitcase of my lighting gear. Peter, interested in your edit settings, and have a stupid question - once you put in the settings on the first image, is the software able to retain the settings for subsequent shots or do you need to edit each, or create a preset?
@j.jurati15673 жыл бұрын
Hey Peter what camara back are you using? Nowhere you show Phase one? Leaf? That is the most important element on the new digital process isn't it?
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer3 жыл бұрын
All our gear is in the description, Camera model: Hasselblad H6D-50c Lens: Hasselblad 150mm Shutter-speed: 1/160 Aperture: f/8 Iso: 100 ps the camera is not the most important thing :)
@j.jurati15673 жыл бұрын
My apologies you are correct the camera is not the most important thing. I don't know anything about Hasselblads if you don't mind what could be the closest Thing on the Mamiya or phase one 645 series I have several 645 and Rz lenses.
Excellent use of the term "shotgun". Who says that you can't teach an old "not a model" new tricks?

It's not the same shadow at all dude. You can't deny what a large surface is going to do with the shadow compared to a smaller one. It's like saying doing shadow puppets would work the same with a single light bulb or a wall of light bulbs. I'm guessing the soft feathering is what people were referring to when saying smaller softboxes wouldn't work the same way.
