I'm going to date myself here: they didn't demonstrate how to properly put one on in even high school. So, when my daughter came to me at 17 I really didn't know how to explain to her how to make sure any boy she was interested in put it on correctly and I improvised with the " banana " method... There are proper ways to use them, and I am glad you demonstrated that. For reference there are instructions in the outer packets of many of them, too. When I was in grad school, one of the professors in the department was doing latex studies that were backed by Trojan. He gave a talk at weekly seminar about that work. The talk was full of double entendre but was also pretty interesting. That was in the 80's, and I'm sure that the technology has advanced a great deal since then. I remember that one test involved inflating a condom to see what pressure was required to cause complete rupture. I think that they also did tests on sheets of latex and not just on condoms. The problem with condoms in real life is that they require an interruption in the action while one is applied. Sometimes, that interruption hampers the experience.

This will be a very important video for people Dr Rena as many will probably not realize the importance of making sure that a condom actually fits correctly and that they can come in many sizes. I personally don't use condoms at present as I don't need to as I am currently impotent so unable to wear them. However when I was able to perform and did wear them I found that many of them would fall off during sex. Making sure that you find the right size (and not being embarrassed to admit you are on the small size) is vital because if they fall off then that defeats the purpose of a condom and exposes you and your partner to potential harm.

It's best to apply a small amount of lube to the penis head or just a small amount inside the tip of the condom. Otherwise, yes it can slip off. Thin condoms are tested to the same standards as regular ones, but can break a little more easily especially if you don't have enough lubrication, use for an extended time, have rough sex, or anal sex.

Thanks Dr. Rena! I have had the opposite experience of someone else's prior comment. I only have about 1 1/4" of girth. All of the standard condoms make me feel like I am wearing a loose plastic bag. Why are condoms "one size fits all", but called large at the same time? And why is the only alternate size extra large? Where are the medium and small sizes? Maybe they don't think they will sell any mediums or smalls, because guys will be too shameful about buying them? Unfortunately, on top of the loose plastic bag feeling issue, I have decreased sensitivity from circumcision, retarded ejaculation/orgasm, and have also started to experience erectile dysfunction in the last few years. We take a break to locate and open the condom. I put the condom on that doesn't fit. My "friend" immediately gets "sad" (at least slightly flaccid), which leads to the condom having even more wrinkles and folds around my "friend". Orgasm is very unlikely for me under these circumstances. Sometimes I don't even want to bother with sex, until we have known each other for long enough and gotten tested, so we can use retraction. I often suggest mutual masturbation instead of intercourse with a condom. I should really experiment with using female condoms. I wonder why are they not more commonly used?

I did not, Dr. Malik. I missed that day. And when I took sex ed in the 1990s (in Fairfax County, Virginia) ... they viewed it more like recess. I did not get to make it up. I still have basically no idea how. I don't even know my proper size in that department. The worst part is my parents signed the consent forms. And when I told them this recently (either this year or last) ... they were quite annoyed too. My Momma (that's what I call her) is a retired 7th and 8th grade math teacher. Dad is retired DOD. Guess who I learned my colorful language from. My younger brother (and only sibling) learned it from the same person. Hell ... I refuse to throw my parents under the bus. Fairfax County Public Schools on the other hand ... I don't give a damn.

I'm very girthy (>6.25" in circumference), and finding condoms that fit is extremely frustrating. Up until recently the FDA banned any condoms that had a maximum width greater than 54mm. At over 6.5" at the base this just does not work at all. I ended up having to order 69mm condoms from Europe which fit me perfectly. I guess even bozos at the FDA think one size fits all.

When you talk about girth, is that riameter or circumference? I was told to measure Circumference. I am newly widowed and now have the need for condom. I have settled on an XL due to a 6" cir. You don't have to unroll all of the condom for it to work, but you must unroll it all the way down on the penis. The width is what matters most for safety & comfort. As long as it does not slide off, it should be ok. There are smaller sized condoms available online. Try looking up *small size condom sampler" to find one that's best. Online condom retailers offer variety packs in different categories of condoms to try out multiple models without breaking the bank.
