@Alex Ziskind I am using MBA on M2, 16GB, 1TB. Current project for watchOS (but iOS on React Native). This is one of the most heaviest projects in the history of my work. A clean start takes 2m 48s, the next start takes 19s. Before that, on MBP 15" 2016 on i7 2.7GHz, 16GB, 512GB, it was all about 5 times slower.

Last week i went for MBP. I struggled a lot and couldn't decide. Finally I came to the conclusion that I need a multipurpose machine in my case and I wanted to have better screen and speakers. Both are the best I have seen in laptops. Doubts remain though :) especially when i know m2 pro will come out soon and how nice the design of m2 air is.

Thanks for the great video! For regular X code development times and medium size build, what are the temps of Air M2 vs M1 pro 14 inch? While actual build you shown the difference was huge 64 C vs 92 -99 C, but those would be short bursts during build process which might be fine. But during regular coding sessions and some browsers open, youtube tutorials, what are the temp difference?

The single core performance is probably more important for small code base, the build is probably single threaded. The biggest project I worked on took multiple hours to build, with the build server around 45 minutes for 4.5 millions lines of code. Cool test btw ! 😊👍🏻

I think in small build, the air thermo issue have no effect, the new core performance gain shine. But when the build time increase, the heat issue kick in and hold back the performance. I think the M2 may beat M1 Pro if it put in a Mac mini or something with no thermo limit

Build size does not matter. Normally in Linux we can specify how many threads to use but not sure of Mac and windows. In max should be possible since it still uses many of same or similar tools. But still thing is not everyone is building a full OS from source many times a day… single or multithread Uhm yeah. Only time I was wowed with most my builds was 40 minutes on a Ryzen cross compiling for arm chip. Had all cpu cores and threads pinned to 90-100%. Did same thing on a much older machine. It took 20 minutes longer. For something I needed over the weekend and the compiles happened while I went to sleep who cares. Job wise different sure. But still with what most people compile on a machine meh. Most will happen in cloud or a development cluster which means the speed of 2 seconds or 20 minutes makes 0 difference because it is done on servers and not your machine’s problem so the speed is a mute point

Interesting about the shorter projects. Still wonder about memory. For me the thing that seems to kill my intel based machine is actually debugging in xcode. Looking at iStat data I see that it is consuming 26gb all by itself. This is a 32gb machine, so what would it look like on an M1/2 machine.

@@JadeSchneiderr I normally put three sticky notes on the empty place on the keyboard, each side. The screen is so close to the keys when the lid is closed that if the laptop gets compressed even a bit in a bag, by less than a millimetre, the screen will touch the keys, and the screen coating rub off. Had this problem on my two latest MacBooks, with key “imprints” on the screen in the middle (as that’s where the screen gets compressed most easily towards the keys). But yes I realize that this is not a workflow to do with a laptop. I actually just ordered an M2 Air 16gb, 10 core gpu, 512 ssd for my portable machine to run my Python and Fortran simulations. I think that portability is very important. And to do the heavy lifting I have my work pc at home, to which I remote from the Mac.
