@@softwareengineeringwithkoushik so far, it has been a pretty big boost in performance from my m1 air. My day-to-day things I do it handles with ease. Web-browsing, simple code writing, a few games, media consumption. I haven't done any heavy loads yet. The closest i got to encountering an issue was with a game where got the spinning wheel, but that game isn't optimized for Apple Silicon so can't blame a machine for the one app that just slowing down while the rest of the computer is super fast. I blame Epic Games for not developing more mac friendly (Apple Silicon) games.

I'm finding it worrisome that these new M chips are getting hotter. The very thing we hated about the Intel versions. I know you will say these chips are faster performing and optimized but 100 C is a 100 C regardless of the label on the CPU. This means fan noise is going to become more prevalent.

But this is totally fine. Very few people are using a MacBook pro to compile a project for 1 hour straight. Realistically you compile something for 2-10 minutes. During that time it gets warm, at some point it turns the fans on, and then you are back to coding/browsing/etc and it cools back down.

Thanks for your insight Alex ! Although I'd like to ask you, did you make sure the M1 MacBook Air was not in low power mode ? I've done extensive testing with my daily driver M1 air, and the behaviour in your video is exactly the same as mine when in low power mode: -Package power is limited to about 4-5W instead of 10-14 -Temperature jumps to the 50's and gradually reaches a peak in the mid 60's -Roughly half the performance of regular power mode I really hope this doesn't mislead people into thinking the M1 air is half the speed of the others when in reality, any task that doesn't use the media engine can expect about 85-90% the performance of an M2. A more detailed video about this: "Apple M1 Performance and Power Consumption in Low-Power Mode" By "The Curious Engineer" Cheers !

The 15" MacBook Air has won my heart. I took mine to Europe and it was so nice having a lighter machine in my back pack. I have traveled before with a 16" MacBook Pro and it's much less tiring to carry all day. The Apple Silicon M2 performance, 15" screen, and comfortable typing deck make it the spiritual replacement to my Core i9 16" MacBook Pro - without the Touch Bar of course. I especially like the compact fast charging power brick. I recommend at least 16GB of unified memory (mine has 24GB) and 512GB of SSD space (mine has 1TB). If you are wanting a bigger screen, then there is a sizable gap in the pricing ladder (about $800) between the 15" Air and 16" Pro models. And the Midnight and Starlight colors are a nice change from the MacBook Pro .. where you can have any color you want .. so long as it's gray.

Thought i would add my 2 cents. I've used my m1 air for 3 years and it has been a REALLY good machine. It had 16gb with a 512gb ssd. I just bought the new Macbook Pro m3 with 24gb and 1tb ssd. I have to say I'm pretty happy with it. IOS and android simulators are much quicker on the m3. I know I could have spent an additional $400 and got the m3 pro, but I would rather use that on a new monitor. I'm still using my thunderbolt display, which is still good by the way. Apple did a really good job designing it. However, I am lusting for a 5k display after experiencing the screen on my new m3. I'm feeling like the base m3 with additional ram is a good fit for me.

I originally bought the 15” M2 16/512 because it was on sale for $1399 at Best Buy. But after 10 days of use, i noticed Xcode would freeze during light task. Did a factory reset and a day later it happened again. Then the 14” M3 Pro 18/512 went on sale for $1749 at Best Buy so i exchanged for that 14” M3 Pro. I really do miss the 15” screen size but on the 14” M3 Pro Xcode has not frozen up using the same files and light task i was working on. But if the same issue occurs on my 14”, i am definitely returning and going for the 15” 16/512. Screen Size > Faster Performance.

Respectfully, I don’t get why people are complaining so much about the M3 pro and its title. It deserved the title way more than the 13” pro it replaced, has basically all the pieces and looks of the pros (same build, same display, same extra ports over the air, better speaker and maybe mic setup, higher power headphone jack setup). The only things it really “lacks” at $400 less is a higher starting ram configuration and a base chip. The reality is, they did what they should have done and gave the 13” pro a proper update and necessary price increase. Do I think it should have more ram or be $100 less? Totally, but it makes complete sense based on the existing MacBook options they have. TL/DR: I disagree with the mindset that it’s essentially a MacBook Air variant. It’s clearly an affordable pro variant, as it has FAR more in common with the big brothers.

Help! Theres a redditor that needs help with knowing if the m3 pro 14 can display more than one display. I’m asking because on Apple site it says only one. But older m1/2 can do more. Is there a hack?

could our big bro also compare this to at least cough-cough 20-cough y.o. 1 core device that cough-cough wouldn't get that hot at all? In this and other comparison videos from this channel I see 100+ thermals after relatively short and light tasks, especially the ones from current video. This is far in the throttle range and I guess I have my suspicions why I wouldn't see comparisonds to PCs here. Or maybe because 6 power cores will be compared to 12 or even 20, idk.

yo, @Alex Ziskind That C++ sort test is a bit fishy, right? 3 minutes single core and under the second multicore test. Considering there are 8 cores, multicore test can be 8 times faster in ideal world. That would be 22 seconds at best. So where is the catch?

That average power is scary good relative to the newer gen both in terms of arch and node process (5nm vs 3nm). If you could do couple of tests and show efficiency (performance or total time spent / Watt hour or total energy spent) it’ll be really informational.

I suspect Apple will permanently move the “MacBook Air” to the Pro chassis while keeping the name and leaving the 1600$ price tag. Do you want a cheaper MacBook Air? Oh look, the iPad Pro is basically that and if you buy a Magic Keyboard cover…
