Sizing a Ring Larger

Showing how easy it is to size a ring up larger. As is shown in the video, I dove tail the piece I'm adding so that the seam is extra strong and never cracks.

Nice technique sir. Sir it be resize down on 9.25 starling silver with solitaire AD stones or any other imitation ring? Or this flame process will ruin the total ring if it's not pure silver?

I am resizing a lot of rings daily, many of them are antique, yet I have never seen that dove tail cut on neither of them, only straight solder lines between added piece (I started working as a professional jeweller not long ago, I can resize a ring within 20 minutes if it goes up, your 3 minutes seems as something unachievable for me). My question is : what difference does it make to shape the ends in such way apart from making them more firm during the soldering? And the other question is : wouldn't welding it slightly melt the shank, thus forcing you to file more of it? Im usually welding on laser, welding with torch seems to me to be super risky especially when many rings I resize or repair are cheap indian/chinese metals softer than anything proper. When I owned a trade shop in the 90's I had 9 accounts with two being big mall store accounts so after doing several ring sizings daily speed comes naturally with most of us in the trade able to size lds 10k or 14k small in the 3 minute range. I also have sized at least 7000 - 10,000 rings which gives you an idea of the quantity I had coming through my business. As for welding, it's really quite simple to just roll out metal (same as what the ring is) to the same size as a piece of sheet solder, fit it between the seam and basically melt it in place. Really just practice and understanding when to pull back so nothing is melted. Torch being used is also important so that one can achieve a small direct flame as opposed to a soft bushy flame many beginners learn with.

Can a sliver ring be resized more than once? I have a ring that is a size 7. It might have been resized once before. It only needs to go up one size to 8. Thanks.

Sure, just locate the seams from the previous sizing and cut it there. Cut out the entire piece added and add a larger section in its place. Just realize that each time a ring is sized it gets a little thinner from filing, emery, and polishing.

What gauge do you roll the silver to fuse? Can you explain the dovetail

A dove tail is the shape of a shallow V with one negative and one positive instead of a straight seam. The piece rolled out is probably 24 gauge or very similar in thickness to actual plate solder.

There is another ring sizing video that shows sizing silver rings with gemstones and a gold ring held in my fingers. What is most important is your type of torch and whether it can create an aggressive oxidizing flame or not. What type of torch do you have?

@@craigdabler-thediycastings7511 Currently I'm using a Smith Little Torch, but I've been looking to get a new set up as far as a torch. If you have a recommendation I would love it hear it! I have a seen a few videos where people are using Heat Shield so not to have to remove the stones, and I would love that option. I would love your advice. Thank you!

@@Gummybear0219 I'm not a fan of heat shield since it only coats the outside of a stone and heat can still travel through the metal. I prefer water or water with sand and heating fast! Get in and get out quick! Your torch is fine but limited if using disposable bottles. I have a Hoke with full size bottles and regulators but this torch is now made in China so instead I'd get a Meco if I bought another. It really just takes practice to get good and comfortable with it.

5 weeks is crazy. I'd find a family run business with an in store jeweler and have them do it in a day or two.
