The problem Dr. Mpofu-Welsh is that people do not define their freedom for themselves, they let political parties and the media define what freedom is for them. One of the most problematic situation we are faced with in Africa; particularly in South Africa, we lack critical thinking skills. When some of us pointed to the problematic CODESA deal, at the time it was not fashionable to do so, we were either criticized or ignored, now the little snake that no one saw, has only revealed its tails. Instead of people looking for the whole snake, they are discussing about the tail. Thanks for the book Dr. Welsh-Mpofu for the book.

Very interesting to hear a different perspective. The average person who has followed the birth of the rainbow nation from an international perspective, see the abject failure of the ANC may be due to institutionalised criminal behaviour within the top level, filtering down to even the minor officials, not the ghost of apartheid, it's easier to justify wrongdoing with emotion and finding a convenient scapegoat as an excuse for ineptitude.

This is really thought provoking. One other thing is that post apartheid, the Democratic SA state has really opened doors for apartheid beneficiaries to benefit from the African market as South Africa became an important member of the AU family. You look at SA companies such as Mtn, Shoprite, Multi-Choice, etc. Are some of the biggest companies on the continent from tapping into the African market using the SA brand which became the most admired on the continent after apartheid. The foreign policy & state involvement on global political dynamics have been more beneficial to them than anyone else in this country. Thank you Dr Mpofu, will be getting the book soon & I'm looking forward to it 💯

I look forward to reading your suggestions and conclusions as to how to move forward. This premise can be applied to anywhere in the world that commits to freedom and democracy: I.e an inequality of outcome; the outcome of which has a lot to do with history. There are few people who would disagree that Apartheid exacerbated these outcomes in South Africa; however the dispute is in terms of what to do about it. A focus on actual inequalities (i.e helping poor people get better opportunities; investing in educating poor people) would be a much better way to start, rather than highlighting the divide along racial lines - especially in a country with numerous 'races' and languages where the lines blur. The later approach, in my view, will lead to social regression, mass emigration, economic decline, and at worst, war.

People's feelings cannot be legislated by laws and government. Just because you make separation of races illegal don't mean the races won't separate. some groups hate the sight of the other and will never integrate fully. That includes economics. Economics runs South Africa- not the government. The minorities who control the economy are making billions but blame the government for all the ills of society. Apartheid will never die in SA because it's not limited to SA. The world lives under a the same rules of engagement. A certain hierarchy based on a Eurocentric values and assumptions.

The point we missed as Africa in general, when we were fighting for our freedom. was that, we fought against colonial rule instead of fighting for freedom. we won the fight against colonial rule but what was handed to us was power. something we never asked for and it has gone forward and corrupted whoever claims a position.

Just read chapter 1 Space. You've brought to my attention the gated communities we keep seeing but not giving much thought & the private security that protect it. As I live in Cape Town & work in Milnerton I immediately thought of Century City. Everything is policed in that space. Segregation is no longer policied by the state but it now left to private entities. Your argument makes sense to me in chapter 1.

SMWX, I have given the details to my daughters to purchase as my Christmas present. Space, Law, Wealth, Technology, Punishment. No justification is intended, but as a white boy born in 1960, you lived in 'white' suburbs, went to 'white' schools, only blacks you met were the domestic worker (kitchen girl), and gardener (garden boy), and then did two years military conscription, where they taught you that the Communists & Blacks were the enemy, then went to a 'white' university with a few permit Indian students. NUSAS educated a few students. But we were doomed to be racists.

And now it cames😂 however I wish you would also put what is happening in South Africa and your views and solutions in the bigger context of what is happening in the rest of the world or in other democratic counties. Our lives on this planet becames more and more interconnected and your children would propably not know a South Africa but rather some sort of world order. We as Africans, "yes I am an African even if I have a light skin I was born and bred in Africa I know nothing else." need to know what to negotiate in this new world.

I think in our discourse we need to begin to acknowledge that class is becoming a much bigger issue than it was 24 years ago. And when we label classism wrongly as racism because black people are still mostly poor I think we are failing to understand what’s actually going on. I live in a fancy estate and the people living in mansions driving range rovers are black people, and with the black middle class exceeding the number of white people in the country the conversation is more about classism than it is about racism. I grew up middle class born in a post apartheid South Africa and I’m black and have never felt like I didn’t belong in Sandton or had to dress extremely well so as to not be targeted in rich spaces, I never doubted that I belonged in those spaces because I existed in those spaces with many many black people and that’s why again this is about class and the privileges afforded to you if you are rich in South Africa.

Class matters. But race matter, too. I don’t think one excludes the salience of the other. They combine in different ways. But more of my thoughts on this in the book. Black middle class complicity in the new apartheid is one of its interesting features.

The problem is, and I know people dont want to listen to this. Socialist Policies Entrench Poverty and Inequality further. The ANC basically just expanded the NP's Patronage system with more race laws, and the whites protect themselves from being excluded by starting their own businesses. If you are interested in solving poverty problems in South Africa, I can put you in touch with people with some interesting ideas on how to do that. If you are interested in fixing inequality. That is impossible. Humans have tried doing that many times in the past, and it have always ended with a massive body count.
@argentnexus7129
@argentnexus7129 3 жыл бұрын
It is "impossible" to fix inequalities only because of the disingenuity and dishonesty that encompasses the so-called solutions. Starting on an inaccurate and dishonest premise of this inequality, as has been the case, will NEVER lead to a solution. Embracing TRUTH while, not resolving inherent inequalities, will give more purpose and strength to resolving the inequality of FAIR opportunity iro of self-determination. However, let me point out that RACE is not a criterion for the inequalities that you are referring to.

@@argentnexus7129 Ok... Im going to discuss this in good faith with you. And treat you with total respect. So there is no missunderstanding. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement. Is it possible for you to be equal to your self in a decade?
@argentnexus7129
@argentnexus7129 3 жыл бұрын
@@ah1rooivalk In the same spirit of being respectful, your question is nonsensical. In a mathematical context 1 is ALWAYS equal to 1 as is 2 equal to 2 and a specific apple equal to that same specific apple. So in that context I am equal to myself ALWAYS ( taking into account that there is no external force to DIMINISH who I am). A second or a decade is of no consequence.
@ah1rooivalk
@ah1rooivalk 3 жыл бұрын
@@argentnexus7129 But you know this is not true. You can not be equal to yourself in 10 years. In 10 years you will have more experience. In 10 years you will also be older which leads to the decay of your power of youth. The point I am trying to make here. Is that no two people not even the same person from two different days will never be equal to each other.
@argentnexus7129
@argentnexus7129 3 жыл бұрын
@@ah1rooivalk Again, respectfully you are wrong. You are trying to prove a point with an illogical and incorrect premise. In 10 years time the "me" you refer to, will as you state be a different "me" both ADDED to with regard to wisdom and experience and SUBTRACTED from insofar as to the decay of the power of youth. The fundamental rule of math is that what you do on one side of an equation needs to be done exactly on the other side for equality to be maintained. Therefore your comparison of "me" to "me" should be the comparison of "me" in 10 years time with the "me" in 10 years time not with the "me" of today. You are already on the wrong footing by comparing two identities from DIFFERENT times when you should be comparing those identities from the very SAME timeline. Time is not irrelevant in the calculation of equality.

The failure of the ANC over the 27 years is as much to blame for the "new apartheid" as the NP was. If the ANC wasn't as corrupt as it is and presided of the complete failure of the state it could have lifted millions of people out of poverty and leveled the playing field by now. @@RomanoPlescia blaming the ANC is a convenient divide and conquer trick. It's the white minority dominated economy that prevented SA from growing like it should. Maybe if the nation had went the socialist route then you might have a point. Maybe if they controlled the resources then IF the economy was in the same shape it is now. No way can a democratic elected government in a capitalistic system lift "millions" out of poverty. The main issue with SA is a white minority still controls the economy. Not the government. As long as that remains the case South Africa will never grow.
