Just two days ago I googled how much the ANC was worth, but I didn't have definite results. Instead, the results displayed were the worth of members of the ANC like President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mbeki , Zuma and Patrice Motsepe.

Does this mean more wealthy families in South Africa will be made more visible in how their hands influence party policy? I know the Facebook brigade loves outing them (Ruperts, Oppenheimers and Wieses) as maniacal, manipulative greed-driven masterminds. My view is that this bill took way longer to sign than I previously thought.

We’ll see. Anyone or any entity donating over 100K per-annum has to be made transparent. But as I say at the end, there are some loopholes.

If you vote for a political party based on their policies, values, etc., surely their donors believe in the same policies? Does it really matter who they are? Transparency is great and all, but in the age of cancel culture I can imagine the ANC or more likely the EFF going after big donors to other parties.

I think it does matter. When you look at revelations emerging from the State Capture Commission, it’s naive to assume that donors have innocent intentions. The link between private interests and public power needs to be made more transparent. This act won’t achieve that fully, but I think it’s a step in the right direction.
