Nice video Jon! My suggestion if you dont already have (maybe you have already thought of these things): get a few of these items. 1.) skid plates so you don't have to worry quite as much about rocks. 2.) a set of MaxTrax for getting stuck in sand and also can be used to span across deeper narrow ruts. They will support your forester. 3.) a Cusco tow hook to the front of your rig so that you can get winched out in the event you get stuck and can't get out yourself. 4.) A folding shovel. 5.) of course, a set of all-terrain tires would help for traction and for side wall protection. You don't have to get the tires I have to get a set that will fit in your wheel well. You can of course throw a full sized tire on the roof in a yakima rack cage. 6.) gas can and big water can.

4XPEDITION thanks! I actually had all those items except the traction boards. I have since purchased a set of X bull traction boards. I have personally tested them and they are strong and flexible enough to bridge and ramp any Subaru. Thanks for the info! It’s a great check list.

Mctig Mctiggy the man behind 4xpedition also owns a Jeep rubicon, so he’s ready for the rough stuff. The good thing about a Subaru is they get over 25 mpg on the highways while cruising at 80.. The new JL looks promising with its 2.0 turbo mild hybrid, but I probably couldn’t afford it right now. As far as a truck, even with a Tacoma, I’m just not into getting 16 mpg while cruising at normal SoCal speed of 80mph. That’s what I got in the FJ cruiser I would borrow from my brother back in the day. The only way to get the 23 highway mpg was to cruise at 55mph. Being able to go twice as far on a gallon of gas means I get out there more. Right now with gas between $3-3.50 Traveling 330 miles will cost me less than $100. With a truck you’re looking at $175-$250.

Nice video and I'm glad you made it safely off the trail. I've done Old Dale many times and I can say I don't think it's a good idea for cars like yours to take this road. While you may make it through just fine, if your car does get disabled on Old Dale Road, it may be a day or two before someone finds you (depending on the season). Also, if someone makes the mistake of turning on to Brooklyn Mine Rd, they would be in real trouble. Its much less traveled and the boulders appear fast with little turn-around time. To anyone wanting to take a stock low-clearance vehicle like this on Old Dale Rd, please don't go by yourself and let someone know when to expect you back at camp. The NPS Rangers do not patrol this area unless they are called out and with no cell service, its best to have a "point-person" back at home who can call if you don't check-in at the predetermined time. Finally, if you don't have a high clearance vehicle, do not take this road in the Summer. Heat Stroke is not a fun death. To finalize, with these types of cars you need to take extra precautions or you may be in for a rough time.

I did turn around at the bottom of the hill, the hill you were going up in the beginning. I've learned a few things already from finding this video. Never go alone. Be prepared to be stranded for a few hours or even days. Upgrade your vehicle to tackle this hill. In the three hours I was out there, I saw only 2 vehicles.

That first mine that you stopped at after the hill is the Sunset Mine. My dad and friends used to have a claim on that mine. There was a cabin down on the flat area, and a large wooden structure over the mine shaft. They were attempting to get it operating, but people kept breaking into that concrete bunker (the hoist house - it was in a lot better shape back then) and stealing the equipment. They let the claim go around 1976. The next mine around the corner was operated by a man named Carl Schaple, and he was still pulling gold out when we let our claim go.

@JonDZ_Adventuring6 жыл бұрын
Baltazar Campos Nieto thanks! Yes I definitely got my lesson, and I refuse to go back until I lift my Forester 😃. I know what you mean about holding your foot down, I tried that many times going up this trail but I cut those parts out of the video. I would just spin my wheels, throw rocks everywhere with no progress. I was told that I need to wiggle the steering wheel left and right to help “scan for grip”. Also, there was one time I purposely stopped on the middle of a steep rutted hill Anza Borrego and then flogged the gas pedal. My tires spun violently as I slowly went up the steep hill. Once I got to the top, my “transmission overheated light” came on. That was the only time I’ve ever seen that light and was pretty freaked out. I was impressed that my Forester passed the ridiculous test I put it through, but that hill was meant to be climbed with momentum going in. So, you are probably right 😃. Christopher Sanchez this is a medium difficulty Jeep trail. It was rated a level 5 out of 10 when I did it here. This should be very doable with a lift. Dion Martinez , because the climb up this road was pretty darn technical, I drove up it using Xmode. Traction control needs to be turned off so power is not cut when tires slip. With Xmode engaged you are not able to shift or change SI-drive settings. I’m not totally sure what happens if you hit the shifter to “M”. The biggest advantage that Xmode will give you Here is “BACKWARDS HILL DECENT CONTOL”. This means that if you let off the gas while trying to climb something, you won’t roll backwards as fast.

@JonDZ_Adventuring6 жыл бұрын
Ben, this was a fun trail! I'm sure you'll enjoy it. At the start of the trail the road is sandy and corrugated, so I aired down to 22psi to smooth out the ride and resist getting stuck in the sand. When I reached the rocky sections, I never aired back up. I actually forgot to. With your extra ground clearance and the very tough BFG KO2's, you should do great. I entered the trail from the south (Interstate 10). I took Pinto Basin Road to Old Dale road all the way north until I hit highway 62. We camped out at 33°59'51.3"N 115°43'00.9"W. That area has so many different roads and old mining settlements. If it's windy, and you plan on camping out there, those coordinates were perfectly tucked away from the winds. Have fun out there, let me know how it goes or share your own video. Be safe!

Good to know man! Thank you for the tips - I really appreciate that. I am a little apprehensive as I don't have a way to air my tires back up currently AND I will be solo on the drive. So I have been debating if I should just come back to it when I have a spotting partner.

I would definitely recommend a spotter, skid plates, full sized spare, all basic recover gear, a radio, and food and gear in case you find yourself in a bad scenario. If you need a tire inflator, I would recommend the Viair 85P for a reliable inflator at a good price point (around $45). If you need a trail partner the MtnRoo brotherhood Facebook group should have someone interested in doing this trail with you. I would go again, but not until I get my forester lifted :P I scraped my Primitive skid plates 13:20 pretty good. It was minor, but It did press my mid armor plate into my exhaust manifold causing a loud vibrating sound. facebook.com/groups/MtnRoo/

Danny Arias I would always go taller over wider if you had the choice. Taller tires give you more of a foot print when aired down, also, look more badass. And, also gives you better fuel economy when aired up. But as far as capability, I’m not sure what you should go with. You might be better off with the KO2’s. There aren’t too many choices for a 17 inch tire (although much better than choices with a 18 inch tire). The reason I went with the GO15’s is for ice performance, low road noise, light weight 8-9 lbs less than the KO2’s. The BFG’s look much more aggressive and I’d bet they’d be grippier for trail riding. Because that extra weight of the tires will add to your rotational mass, acceleration and wheel horsepower will be affected. People say LT tires are overkill on Subaru’s and I’ve been pretty good so far with my P-rated Yoko G015’s.
@dannyarias5626 жыл бұрын
What offset do you have with your wheels? Also what would you recommend for offset. How much or little?
@JonDZ_Adventuring6 жыл бұрын
Danny Arias I’m running a stock Subaru wheel. It’s actually a wheel from a 2012 to 2015 BRZ/FRS. The Oem offset is -48. The offset you want all depends on you. There’s really no evidence that offset will cause damage to your hubs, I think Subaru’s are just too light of a vehicle for that. Any 5x100 lug wheel should be fine. But! For more info! Nilesh Singh so, you can’t completely turn off VDC, it’s only traction control that’s turned off. It’s confusing because when you press the “Trac Ctrl” button, the center upper screen on a Subaru will say “VDC OFF”. This isn’t really the case. To prove that, you’ll notice your Subaru’s center screen will still say “VDC ACTIVATED” whenever you lose traction. Many Subaru KZbinrs get this wrong. Now, to answer your question, YES!!! you absolutely must have Traction Control “OFF” when ever you are in a situation where you lose traction but still “NEED power sent to the wheels”. Sand, mud, deep snow, and icy hill climbs will require traction control to be turned OFF.

I take no offense about the little Forester. That was traded in for a 2019 Honda Passport. I’m familiar of the capabilities of a Jeep Wrangler. If you’re familiar with the capabilities of a Subaru, this 2019 Passport falls somewhere in between. It actually has the same crawl ratio as a Jeep renegade and Compass Trailhawk (same transmission/axle ratio), but I get a real mechanical LSD. I live near Los Angeles and I have to drive 60 miles to get to the nearest place I can hit dirt. I find myself getting out very often, about 2-4 times a month! I think getting decent MPG’s is the reason I get out so much.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring i would say the jeep is as safe as any other suv out there. true if you lift one and add bigger tires like mine the center of gravity is higher and then i could see a safety factor. i have had no close calls. i watched your other video, i now see your in a group. thats cool! the vid i commented on it just looked like you and your girl and had no clue you guys were in a special group. thats why i made the comment about jeeps being more capable. i live semi close by to open areas compared to the Los Angeles area. there are some cool places around here. hit me up if your out toward the big bear area..your right offroading is a dam addiction brother!!!

Wrong car, get a Jeep if you want to do trails like that

naw.. we did this trail in a stock lexus gx460... only thing I recommend is a thicker than stock front differential skid plate

Just give it a small lift and better tires and it's all good! Not everyone needs overpriced vehicles.... The majority of the planet drive roads like this in small compact cars!🤘🏼

You don’t need a Jeep for this road 😂 but that’s definitely the Jeep thing to say.

I see no problem, three Subaru's are very capable!
