Wow, just discovered these gems today out of curiosity when googled OG Broadway version of Grease 1974. I'm mildly surprised, these songs are done beautifully! Though I'll always have the Movie versions in my head, these are awesome and fresh!

What is it with Rocky Horror Picture Show actors being blessed with such versatility? Look at all that Tim Curry has done -- acting genius. And the same guy who was nerdy Brad Majors is uber-hottie Danny Zuko? His voice on the final "Niiiighhhts" is awesome, and those eyes. Wow. No wonder Carole Demas really had an affair with him. I met him at an autograph show and asked him what he thought of them replacing "All Choked Up" with "You're the One That I Want," for the movie, and he said he liked both songs but that he never felt he could really sing "All Choked Up" easily and thought the change was probably good.

Somewhere there's a clip of Carole Demas doing a couple of songs from Grease at a cabaret type show. She skipped back into Sandy's shoes so effortlessly, it was incredible.

If Olivia Newton-John hadn't been in the film of Grease how many of the most famous songs would still have been included? I know Hopelessly Devoted To You was written just for her and Marie Osmond, apparently, has said that the screenplay she was given when they offered her the role of Sandy was much edgier and different to the one Olivia ended up in.

+Stuart Allyn Yes, the Broadway show and even more so the original version in Chicago were much grittier and more real. For the movie, much was changed, also some really great songs were taken out, which is a shame. Most of the songs are from the Broadway score, except Hopelessly Devoted, Sandy and Grease is the word. Far as I remember everything else is from the original score. But Among those removed was Drive-In Movie, a really great song for that moment when they are there and more of a 50's style song too.

+Stuart Allyn One of the big problems I had with the movie,was the removal of All Choked Up in liu of a contemporary sounding song like You're the One that I want......And the other big problem was skipping over Doody singing Those Magic Changes

did early broadway shows use hand mics or was that just a show choice?
@zebrastreet9993

Broadway shows, back when Grease debuted, frequently used floor mics (on the floor of the stage toward the front). The hand mics seem like a choice for this performance. Kind of an odd choice actually but they must have had technical reasons. EDIT: just watched footage of the original early 70s London production of Grease and they were using hand mics so maybe that was part of the original Broadway version.

@@zebrastreet9993 I saw the original 1972 show Grease on Broadway and they did Not use any hand held Mike's at all during the play....

@zebra street this was for a concert. That's why they have all the hand held mikes that they keep passing around.

@@zebrastreet9993 the corded hand mic were a choice for the show, an emulation of 50s style performances. This was the way it was designed and choreographed and all subsequent productions from the original were done this way. The dialog scenes used only floor mics, the hand helds were used for the musical numbers. This Best of Broadway recreated the original as close as possible. The later revivals made many changes, softened the edginess of the original, substituted songs and changed the entire microphone thing and much of the choreography.

disagree - I was in my teens when I saw the original Broadway run, and it was sweet and fun, but with a nice sprinkling of grit -- the film, being targeted for a mass market, clipped out pretty much all of the grittier language/moments and, understandably went for a much slicker, bigger production ... the film is fun and it's success speaks for itself, but I think the stage play is closer to what that generation (those who graduated high school in the late 1950s) were really like
