Books like this are what happen when you hire people who have zero experience writing comics and tell them to write a comic book series. They don't know where to go with it because all they know how to do is whine about identity politics. So instead of writing compelling characters, all they do is end up writing caricatures and engaging in strawman-style arguments. And have you noticed how almost ALL of the SJW superheroes are really unlikable as people? Not to mention that they're just a bunch of insulting stereotypes. America Chavez is the "spicy latina" who flies off the handle at the drop of a hat, Riri Williams is the "angry black girl" who thinks she's better than everyone else, Bobby Drake is the "douchey gay guy" who blows up at everyone who doesn't bow down to his identity politics, FemmeThor is the "angry feminist" who rages about female empowerment, etc. The problem is that these people a) don't know how to write comic characters, and b) don't understand what drives a good story: conflict, loss, and growth. They refuse to have their characters ever actually LOSE, because they're supposed to be so much better than everyone else (especially those icky old white men!), so every "villain" they run into is either a C or D-lister who in a real comic would have to jump the hero with about a half-dozen other C/D-listers to stand a chance, or a bunch of generic "villain of the week brownshirts", who get mopped up like it's nothing, all while the hero can soapbox about how morally superior they are because "I'm gay/latina/female/not white". None of their characters ever grow. They were spat out onto the page fully formed, and have nowhere to go but in a straight line. There is no emotional growth, no loss, no real conflict at all other than the manufactured identity politics soapbox bullcrap. And this is why they're failing miserably.

that whole dialogue about Older Bobby beating up Romeo weirded me out- but not because he would beat up the kid (he punched that annoying Zak kid in the issues featuring Daken- so it's not OOC for him to threaten violence against a teenage boy) but because he's legit hitting on his younger self. Also, who the heck says "baby me" when talking about their younger self? it's either "Teen Me" or "Kid Me", NEVER "Baby Me".

So we're supposed to assume that a 15 year old boy with different life experiences is still supposed to grow up to be the same man? I'm sorry but no. Nature versus nurture has been a debate for a long time but both sides agree that both nature and nurture play a vital role in who we become. This boy isn't going to have any of the same experiences from the moment his life deviated from the older version of himself. He will not grow up to be the same man that older Bobby is. He'll grow up to be something completely different. Older Bobby is kind of just fucking up this poor kid's life.

Wow, the X-Men and the current Marvel universe in general needs another a colossal reality changing catastrophic event ASAP! - They NEED to wipe the slate clean, not just the awful characters they've made of these "Heroes" in the books but the entire writing staff for the most part. Marvel needs to clean house while there are still some fans left that will support them moving forward. I don't even recognise most of my childhood heroes in todays comics as they've been perverted and twisted into garbage political tools to push a hateful ideology. Such a shame. Thanks for the video.

Not sure i would call it irony, DC just seem like they're in such a rush to catch up to whatever it is that Marvel are doing in their films that they aren't giving the characters enough time to grow. Plus they don't seem to be putting the right people on their projects, hopefully they'll get their act together so we can just enjoy all the forth coming superhero films. But my original point was more for comics over the movies. ;)

You got to love how marvel was all diversity matters. People hate diversity and and women characters. Yet go on to make and write one of the most unlikeable characters ever, after mind raping him. Who comes off more as a villain rather then a hero. Doesn't matter if iceman was gay, straight, bisexually. He would still be a unlikeable asshole. Hmm maybe it's their writing. When i get the idea that this character who is meant to be a hero, feels more like a villain then a hero, something somewhere when wrong. That or someone has no idea how to writer superheroes.

@ReverendSyn7 жыл бұрын
You are correct. SJWs do it because they think it makes them superior. It's about self-aggrandizement than any true desire to do any actual objective good. They want to be praised and adored for being progressive. Thats why they get so butthurt when you call them out on it. They also think it makes them immune to criticism. They can then play the victim card and dismiss you as a bigot, a homophobe, a racist, what have you instead of debating rationally.

I swear these people o not understand time travel or alternate realities. The Iceman from the past, or time displaced version (TDV), is the one who was mind raped by the TDV Jean Grey into being gay. Honestly, it would have been "fine" if that only stayed with with the TDV Iceman. But because Marvel hired writers who can't understand concepts like alternate realities we get this cluster of idiocy. How does teen Iceman being gay equal the older one, with a more flushed out history of being straight, suddenly being gay? Also why does the dialogue make it seem like the older version wants to preform self-cest? I mean, when even a character like Deadpool says that it's wrong that really should say something.
@JustSomeGuy7 жыл бұрын
The claim was that they were supposed to be the actual young X-Men. They never got around to explaining how none of them remembered any of this. They later changed this when Marvel did their multiverse story arc. Now the young ones are from an alternate reality that no longer exists as it used to. Now it really makes no sense how the two Bobbys are this similar.

This could have been a simple cliche plot without making the hero look like a creep. Younger Bobby didn't have his parents growing up. So he drops the X-Men to live amongst the normies. In turn, he doesn't have a strong grip on his powers like his older self. Being a mutant tho danger seems to keep finding its way to his door step. His parents get hurt in the crossfire. Ultimately, he has to give up his normy life in order to get stronger and protect the ones he loves. Which also sets up conflict with older Bobby for hurting his parents. And we can see how different their powers develop living different lives.

This just proves how much the new writers in the marvel universe don't understand the art form. The entire idea of using mutants as a story telling device is that it is left up to the reader to infer meaning to whatever type of discrimination that they may receive from being a mutant, as art should be left up to some interpretation it helps it become more personal and special to the reader. This ham fisted SJW agenda does not make for good story telling, character growth, or good art form in general. Its a major reason why I don't buy comics anymore even though I love the art form so much and what comic used to mean to me. Hopefully one day they will get the message and give up politics and go back to good story telling.

I don’t even mind that the stories focus on situations in life that come from him being gay, it’s just the writing and stories suck and that’s all they are about. There's no problem with having a gay marvel character or specifically a gay X-Man. Most people would accept it. The problem is, Marvel took an already established character and made him gay. So, Marvel shouldn't act so surprised when they get backlash for their poor decision. What they should have done was take a new or less established character and write him as a gay character. I think readers would have been more open to that.

There’s a story here, if there was a talented writer going on. I saw that Older Bobby would continue being a douche to his parents, while younger bobby tried to make amends and get to know them again. From there older bobby flies off the rainbow handlebars and berates younger bobby, which causes his parents to intervene and call him out on his behavior. It would end where a villain would attack them, and in the process one of the bobby’s Parents would save their older son but get hurt/die in the process. This would briefly show the older bobby that no matter what he’s still their son, but a resentment has now occurred between the older and newer. The younger goes back with his parent(s) while the older is left to control age his actions.

If I had the power, I’d write straight bobby to arrive from a portal, look at the new bobby, and pull a peter griffin and go “who the fuck is that queer?”

This author needs to write a diary, not turn a superhero comic into a therapy session.

He did. He wrote a series of autobiographical comics. For some reason, he's doing it again with Iceman.

Just Some Guy That's a serious hangup he has then. Perhaps he shouldn't be writing anything at all until he resolves his parental issues in real life.

Making the gay thing an explicit issue is really weird to me because the characters being Mutants was already supposed to allude to persecution for things like race and sexuality. By making it equally explicit to mutation you split the metaphor and dilute the message. Especially given the context of the mutations. Nobody cares if a mutant's gay (unless it impacts their mind control powers or something). They care that their accidental maturation can kill cities. Its a fair concern as a perceived threat to their way of life but, like most actual cases of persecution, its a hollow concern for most of the mutant population who don't deserve the scrutiny or hate . Also, they need to stop unthinkingly modifying character's personalities like this. Bobby, for years, was reminiscent of a Jonny Storm playboy figure. Lots of snark to cover up some of his insecurities. Maybe they were trying to play the same card, but with him gay. The problem is, it only works if it isn't his entire identity. By making 'gay and a mutant' his whole schtick it colors his antics in those lenses and you end up with the weird caricature that works against their own message. It makes them a joke and something of a non-character. If they *really* felt the need to, making him gay could work, but it should really be treated as an accepted thing. Don't bring it up a lot. But then bring it up later as some twist on it being the real reason his parents threw him out of the house. Or go the other way and have them straight up subvert expectations with Younger Bobby.

Frankly I don’t recognize this whole gay iceman thing as canon

I'm SO glad i stopped reading comics 20 years ago, when they were still stories about things happening, and not some kind of half-assed soap opera.

The only reason they did this was to create antagonist and this is a trope I ABSOLUTLY HATE. When you have a character who has changed and revealed to be a good person, the most asshole thing you can do is have said character do a complete 180 all for the sake because you can't come up with an idea for another antagonist. It's a fucking easy-ass move and the only reason they did this was because of the idea that ALL parents, and I do mean ALL (ALLLLLLL!) will never, ever, EVER accept their gay kids. And I get it; coming out is hard and painful and in many cases the results aren't positive but we've had this discussion with Bobby before that lead to a heart-punching story where his dad almost DIES trying to protect him despite not sure how to feel about his son being a mutant. The allegory was already there but of course it wasn't in your face and insulting enough. We needed to have this discussion with another mutant, in another way, that doesn't feel like a complete copy of Bobby's story and without the sitcom antics. Maybe have three mutants with three different endings; one has parents who accept them and support them, one has parents that don't accept them at first but then look at their own actions towards their child before realizing that they're not being supportive and one who's parents outright disown them. Some an example of some of the scenarios aside from asshole parents. Try something new. This ain't working though. =\

Real world politics should stay out of comic books and movies that arent based mainly on real world politics. Change my mind.
