For a show that came out at the very start of the 90's, this thing is AGGRESSIVELY 90's. It's like it perfectly predicted the cultural significance of skateboarding and the X-Games, yet weirdly was so ahead of the curve, the audience for it didn't even exist yet. Quite honestly, a show that's a LOT more authentic and organic than Rocket Power ever was. or worse... Wyld Grinderz.... shudder.

@@defunctchannel9802 Viacom threw a LOT of influence behind Rob Dyrdek. While they didn't directly produce it themselves as a Nicktoon, they probably had some influence someway in getting the show made. Suffice to say, it's a freaking awful cartoon. Every character is a stereotype (Japanese character is a Ninja, Black guy is how a white guy writes "street" and "rap" culture, even have a white guy that's a hillbilly), the writing feels like it was made by an A.I., a malfunctioning one yet, and the dog's just a lame fart joke. I watched 2 minutes of an episode and I knew what true pain was. And it's clearly meant to be a toy line selling series, but a really REALLY bad one.

I'm surprised they had any. There wasn't a lot of female skaters back then. A few could actually throw down, but most were just trying their best. Like the top 2 or 3 girls in a very contest would get coping and do tricks, while 4 thru 10 would just pump the ramp and carve. The women in skating have come a long way since my time in the mid 90s. Amazing talent now.

Shame that they didn't transfer this show over to MTV, feel like if they left out the content meant for younger kids it could have been a good fit in that era. Heck, they could have even useed the show's segments to wrap around punk, hip-hop, and metal videos and stretch things out so the guys making the show didn't have to produce so much new content every season. Also interestingly enough I have no memory of this show at all yet I remember the educational interstitials pretty clearly, lol.

Yeah, this was another show I had real vague memories of as a kid (just running over a year, it makes total sense) but as a teenager, at that point, thoroughly following skate culture and everything around it, I watched the show whenever it aired on Nick GAS and really appreciated the style of the show. It really pulled no punches and was a document of the scene at the time, I just couldn’t believe how it matched the breezy feel of the Bones Brigade videos. And having Skatemaster Tate as co-host really made it legit to the era of skateboarding. I rewatched what’s available back in 2020 and was really impressed that it held up really well as a snapshot of Skate culture in 1990. Maybe not the most important Nick show out there, but even as a niche curiosity this is a great example of how the management at the channel sought to make entertainment out of left-field spaces. And holy moly, they used a fIREHOSE song during the coming up next bumper!

One of my brothers immediately got into skateboarding while SK8 TV was still on Nickelodeon and within a few years would collect almost a dozen skateboards and tons of VHS cassette which showed mostly skateboarding performing stunts and tricks but seldomly any bloopers. I was able to catch one of those called "Church of Skatan" in which the music was opened and closed by White Zombie and had this Grim Reaper priest praising up front during front and back camera maneuvering and twice, the Church Of Skatan bible is burned with the front cover either opened or closed respectively. Then, it was mostly 45-60 minutes of skateboarding set to 90s style music (i.e Beastie Boys, Gravediggaz) which the last song c/o Rev. Horton Head. I doubt he's still into it. We're all in are 40s and see this like we see "Grease": Pure 90s nostalgia.

From CA. Skate culture was huge on the west coast, especially growing up in the 80s and 90s. The only time I got into skating was during the rollerblade craze which I was pretty good at.

This was about the point where Nick started to lose me. What brought me to the channel were shows like their 80s game shows, especially Double Dare and Finders Keepers, and shows like You Can't Do That on Television. SK8-TV was part of a new era that saw the network get away from that and into a bunch of shows that, at least for me, got dull fast, including Wild & Crazy Kids, What Would You Do, and their scripted programming like Clarissa Explains It All, Welcome Freshmen, and Salute Your Shorts. Maybe I was just outgrowing it as I was entering adolescence at the time and my tastes were changing, but it felt like the older shows were better at holding my interest even then and they were getting harder and harder to find on their lineup as they made room for their new generation of shows.

Going back to the Super Mario Bros Super Show, to keep the series fresh, at some point they replaced the live-action segments with “club Mario” segments, which as I recall had some “extreme sports” elements. You can see some of these segments on digital releases of the show for episodes where the live-action segment couldn’t be cleared. The connection to Binder probably helps explain that.

It was doomed when it replaced Don't Just Sit There on 6-1-1991 at its 11:30 AM Est. time slot, dead panned against NBC's monster smash Saved By The Bell. Out of Control, Think Fast, and DJST all suffered from Saved By The Bell's powerhouse ratings and SK8 TV was no exception running all 13 episodes towards its last breath on 9-28-1991. So, let's get reruns of F Troop to fill in the hour against Saved By The Bell or better yet, You Can't Do That On Television the following year. It made it impossible to watch or even hear that video without thinking of her ever since. Well wishes and condolences to her ( to both girls', if not the same) loved ones.

I feel like this would have felt at home if it aired on MTV just a few years later. Of course, at the time, MTV was strictly a music channel so I’m not surprised it wasn't picked up there.
