I'd be curious to know more about what it was actually attending Nick Studios. A 30 minute show versus a two hour one sounds much more appealing on paper, but I imagine that's not including line waiting, audience warmups, camera downtime between segments, outtakes, so on. And you'd also be at the mercy of the studio's taping schedule instead of picking and choosing what show to go to, right? "Sorry Billy, we only film Legends of the Hidden Temple for three weeks in March, all we got taping today is an episode of Wienerville."
@thevhsquest47772 жыл бұрын
I didn’t go back when the Nick shows were taping, but I did see a taping of the short lived Beat The Clock revival which was taped on one of the Nick Studios soundstages so it’s kinda similar. It was pretty early in its run and there were some issues taping stunts, a couple of re-takes were shot and the whole process was a little over an hour and I was just stoked to see a game show taping. That being said, I can’t imagine being there for a 2-3 hour long show, as a kid I would have been so restless.

My family actually took a Floria vacation the summer Universal Studios opened and we were there when it was brand new. We saw a Family Double Dare taping and we saw two up-front games but no obstacle course (you either got one or the other, you didn't pick.) It was probably about 45 minutes total. I remember very little else about the trip other than virtually none of the rides worked since it was so new and we got a partial refund along with a lot of other angry guests.
@TwoPairSA2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're definitely at the mercy of taping. The first time my family went to Universal the _only_ thing I wanted was to see Nickelodeon Studios because I had bought the whole kids network thing hook line and sinker and had a truly bizarre sense of brand loyalty. But when we went literally nothing was filming, so we basically just toured some empty sets and... not much else (that I can remember at least... so it must not have been that good... right?) then exit through the gift shop and that's it! In retrospect I'm glad because being trapped in there even just 30 minutes for a filming would have been like a holy pilgrimage for me at the time but I'm pretty sure it would driven my poor parents insane (especially since, as the ones footing the bill for those tickets they would've surely seen money being drained from them like code in the Matrix just sitting there).
@TheLordTash2 жыл бұрын
@@TwoPairSA Really? When I went in the late 90s, you got to sit in the audience and they'd do a "demonstration" where they called down random audience members to play a Double Dare game or two. It wasn't terribly interesting, but it sounds a lot better than what you got.

This show was so forgettable I was on it and I barely remember it. I vaguely recall going on the studio tour and getting picked to complete a physical challenge like game or two as a sort of audition to do one on the show. I was on the green team. The taping didn't really take long. It was shot as though it was a live broadcast. My clearest memory is that when it came time for me to compete in the game portion it was a complete disaster. I and two other kids had to compete with three kids from the purple team to pin laundry onto a clothesline and then send it down the line to the other end to get tossed in a basket. The "clothesline" they provided however was full-on 3/4 inch thick rope, like the kind you use to tie up boats to a dock, and the "clothespins" they provided were these weird circular clip things that looked like they were from an office supply store. Well these clip things barely opened wide enough to get them onto the thick ass rope they had us using so being the kid who was supposed to get the clothes onto the line so kid #2 could pulley them across to kid #3 with the basket I barely got any clothes onto the line at all, much less securely enough to make the trip all the way to the other end of the studio, so we got zero pieces of laundry in the basket before the buzzer. I ended up looking like a chump on national TV. I held onto that green foam visor and the stupid digital ruler you got as a "prize" for years as mementos until I realized they didn't represent a particularly happy memory and I chucked them. I've waited years for you to cover this show to see if my embarrassment was preserved somewhere on the internet. I'm so happy to learn that I'm "lost media."
@C.Double. Жыл бұрын
I was on this show as well and competed in some kind of laundry relay race... I went on a class trip from red bug elementary and was select to participate. I also remember it being kind of a madhouse with none of the kids actually understanding what we were supposed to do.

Hit in the feels at the mention of Dobie Gillis and Hitchcock Presents. Takes me straight back to the year my parents got divorced. My mother worked days through to the evening, my father worked nights, so when he left for work my mother would come over to the house to spend time with me. We'd usually just sit on the couch watching Nick At Night, both tired from a full day, and I'd fall asleep soon enough because I wasn't used to being up that late. So when I hear the Dobie theme song, or even the voice of Alfred Hitchcock, I feel like that dozy kid that missed his mom, trying to stay awake but about to fall asleep against her shoulder. -- More on topic of this video; I have zero recollection of either Total Panic or Outta Here. I didn't remember Turkey TV either, even though that was prime foundational memory building years.

It was shows like this, the New Mickey Mouse Club, and especially What Would You Do that really solidified Orlando in my mind as the entertainment capital of the world. Wanting to have a career as an actor, game show host, and especially screenwriter I was over the moon when my dad gave the family the chance to choose which sun drenched paradise we should move to - Orlando, or Los Angeles. Having recently taken a trip to Walt Disney World, and having seen shows like this one on a near constant loop, the choice was easy for me. Now I realize that relocating to Los Angeles as a teen would have been a much better option for my career goals, but I still hold this hope deep in my heart that Orlando may once again become "Hollywood East". I mean, we're still churning out such amazing films like Escape From Tomorrow and the Florida Project - and by amazing I mean Manos and The Room levels of bad. Yay?

The Total Panic/Outta Here template I find fascinating. Really when you think about it, they're going for TRL, before TRL was a thing. A block of TV you'd tune into, and is a very causal watch that would make you feel like you were part of a live event/party for a couple of hours. As you said, something that works better as a framework than a solid chunk of content. TRL had music videos to throw to, Slime Time Live had other Nick shows. Something that I don't think that younger generations will quite get about cable tv in the 80s/90s, is how novel it was for things to feel "live". In the age of the internet and Twitch, you're constantly connected in a social way. But in 1990, having the TV on felt like a connection to the outside world, and a show that made it feel like "here's this unscripted, chaotic liveshow happening across the country" was exciting in a way.

Saturday Morning cartoons were pretty much on their last legs by the early 90's. Nicktoons came at the perfect time. NBC had one more season with Saturday Morning cartoons in 1991, before calling it quits for good. And their two pillar cartoons, "The Smurfs" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks", were long gone. Speaking of "Alvin and the Chipmunks", you can expect to see Greg talk about that and its predecessor, "The Alvin Show", by the time he gets to 1994 and 1995.

I definitely watched this show, but I don't remember it being a daily thing. I feel like I only ever caught it about once or twice a week, and I enjoyed it for the most part, though it was never my favorite. Unfortunately I don't have any footage or anything like that, but I do have a few very specific memories from it: 1) An episode that featured one of the girls (Kareen, I think) interviewing someone in the park who was eating, and the kids had to guess (via a multiple choice audience vote) what she was eating based on clues she gave while her mouth was full (It turned out to be pudding) 2) An episode that began with an audience poll on who they would like to be slimed (the winners, the losers, or the host, with the host winning the vote). Then at the end of the episode, they played a game involving green slime and while Tiffany was distracted by determining the winner, Michael and Kareen took the opportunity to give the audience what they wanted and slimed her. 3) Tiffany got her revenge a few episodes later when she hit Kareen in the face with a banana cream pie Yep, I can't remember what I ate for breakfast yesterday, but I still remember oddly specific things from a short-lived TV show I haven't watched since 1990.

You may want to consider an updated video perhaps around Halloween as I just received the complete episode from October 30, 1990 in a trade that features makeup artist Jay Hudson. As you may expect, there is quite a bit of Halloween-themed content, such as the "Pumpkins of the Old West" interstitial as well as a game that involves Frankensteins that involved a couple recycled cranks from a Make The Grade Fire Drill. There probably was indeed more than 40 episodes produced given that show was from its 12th week on the air. Family Double Dare, which premiered on the same day, did in fact produce 40 episodes for the 1990 season. There is a New Kids On The Block concert kit commercial in that episode BTW to prove their popularity. Still, Outta Control continued the "kids variety show" in the tradition of early Nick shows such as America Goes Bananaz and Livewire. What Would You Do? ended up being the most polished version, but was designed to have a longer shelf life. Then all those Nicktoons as well as some Nickcoms really eliminated the need for the "kids variety" shows. The games in Outta Control would sort of live on in the Game Lab portion of the Nick Studios tour. Still, if you listen to the theme, you can hear a sample of Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It!"

I would love to see your opinion on 50/50, a 1997 British kids show with a similar premise 2 teams (of you guessed it 50 kids) competing with tons of physical challenges and contestants showing fever pitch levels of energy.

Wow, this is another one of those shows that aired when I was a Nick fanatic and I have NO MEMORY OF IT

You know it's funny how Hanna-Barbera spent the entire 70s making Scooby-Doo clones, when all along Mystery Inc and Scooby were themselves rip offs of Dobie Gillis and Astro from the Jetsons. Talk about cycular plagiarism
@mightyfilm2 жыл бұрын
That was partially on the network heads at the time wanting more Scooby like shows on their networks. Kind of like what HB would face in the 80's, when they were pressured to make so many Smurf clones.

Speaking of Hanna Barbera characters, Nick would later this year (1990) air Yogi Bear shows up to that point as well. An year before Turner bought Hanna Barbera and 2 years before Cartoon Network was launched. At the time USA was the main cable home for the Hanna Barbera shows.

@@stephenholloway6893 I'm looking forward to this channel covering both that and the repackaged "Moose-O-Rama" Bullwinkle cartoons.

Definitely don’t remember this show at all and I was watching Nick late 80s and on. Maybe I saw it once in awhile but seeing the timeslot of after school I often found myself watching Disney Afternoon, so perhaps that’s why. I did like What Would you Do however which was mentioned similar in vein.

Looks like this was one of the last shows on Nickelodeon to be wiped from the network as there was, as the narrator describes it, no known master copy footage that exists except for home video taped footage that is supplied for this project. Not surprising, Nick Gas, Nick's sister network specializing in game shows, never picked up Outta Here since there is nobody knows if the master copies exist or not. That's too bad because I remember watching Outta Here every weekday at 5 right before Family Double Dare since I had nothing better to do before Wheel Of Fortune came on 2 hours later. The 40 episodes were reaired twice starting with the first 20 up until mid October (no exact date known) when the next 20 started airing which including the infamous NKOTB episode. Nothing much to say about it except they began and ended with both teams playing in booth stunts with their chosen hosts as their team captains with in between guest appearances from various varieties as well as outside studio reports included. By 1991, it was OUTTA HERE. At least PopArena never forgotten about it or else there wouldn't be a Nick Knacks episode on it. I was one of the few that still remember.

You know, I tend to associate Donnie Wahlberg with the Saw franchise than New Kids on the Block. Yeah, this show just seems not much. I'm kind of blanking what else to say, honestly.

As far as lost media of 80's and 90's Nickelodeon go, a missing episode from the Florida Season of "Super Sloppy Double Dare" has resurfaced. Raging Raskals Vs. Looney Barbarians. Posted by Danny Gura from the original Syndicated broadcast. So we now have 38 Florida episodes, out of what was reportedly 40.

Who, I thought your show would get boring when we got to the 90s that it would end up just like every other nostalgia shit video. but you have aroused my interest further, these absurd things are still more fascinating, the things that are almost forgotten. and I'm already looking forward to the next video, I mean the 90s were pretty cring.
