In Jamaican ska (as well as rocksteady and reggae), the riddim guitar plays the "ska" or "skank" on the DOWNstroke, even the faster more frenetic ska. Check videos with Jah Jerry of the old Skatalites, playing the downstroke with his thumb, or even their more recent vids of Frenchy playing with a pick...always on the downstroke. The upstroke is good for accents and flourishes though, as long as you keep the wrist moving and keep the swing with the wrist.

oh really on the downstroke yes? that is how i always play reggae guitar so this is good to know then i can keep my old technique

except that all great reggae and ska guitarists play the up beat with a down stroke. playing it with the up stroke sounds weak .
