Thanks for the upload. Work in Port Wentworth, and get the opportunity to fill some of those containers with large CAT engines on a daily basis....and still watch those massive ships in awe.

I sometimes head down to Crissy Field and the Presidio in San Francisco just to watch the container ships and tankers heading in and out. Very impressive to watch. I'd love to see one of these monsters steaming past, though.

I'm very impressed that the Captain and Pilot are able/willing to take that ship down the river without tugboats. It's a single screw vessel and they usually don't handle very well at dead slow speed but they don't seem to have any trouble making what look like some pretty tight turns. I don't see the bow thruster(s) being used either. Hats off to Master Mariner's.

Hi, I am making a video for a university project at UCL. It is about a bridge in the London Docklands, there is a brief section on why the old docks closed down where we mention the containerisation of the shipping industry. I would really like to include a quick 3 second clip from your video to emphasise our point, they are the nicest quality we have found. We would credit the footage at the end and have it stated in the accompanying report. Yours faithfully Thomas, (studying BSC urban planning and design, the Bartlett UCL.)

Thanks for your comments! I try to do the best I can, and use a tripod every chance I get.....with the exception of my storm footage. Kind of hard to use one in those situations. I enjoy shooting all modes of transportation, and plan to keep adding more in the near future.

Back in the day these were the largest, it's like 7500 TEU's, now I've read about 12000 to 14000 TEU vessels from Maersk. Also note, this vessel in not even fully loaded, it's drafting about 42' and should be able to draft 50' but the USA has very few ports where it can load up to the max.

Just curious- what *does* happen if/when a container is loaded onto the wrong ship, but it's not discovered until (say) a day or two after the ship has set sail? Seeing how these container ships carry thousands of containers, I'm sure errors happen every now and then.

How do those containers stay steady And not fall?
@Arwiiss
@Arwiiss 11 жыл бұрын
Very simply - water displacement. Any object will float if it can displace more water than the weight of an object. So for example if the cargo ships weight is 150 000 tones it has to displace 150 000 cubic meters of water to stay afloat.

No, not Triple-E. It's an S-class with a nominal capacity of 8,160 TEU. In comparison, the E-class carries 15,550 and the Triple-E's will carry 18,000 TEUs.

It all depends, like if you only need to load a certain amount for a trip, they would only load that amount, so very rarely does any ship get fully loaded w/ containers, but if they did, it would take a couple days, because some of the best crane operators can load 30 containers in an hour, out of 12,000, so it would take a bit.
@jacquesblaque7728
@jacquesblaque7728 6 жыл бұрын
You don't just haul them aboard and stuff them below. Terminal operators keep computers busy calculating the load plan. Some containers may have to come off temporarily. The plan is then to load them to facilitate upcoming offloads, keep incompatible hazardous cargoes separated, and maintain stability of the ship. Reefer containers need access to power cables too. Meanwhile, gotta stack 'em ashore to support the above- keeps computers busy too.

When you can have a couple hundred containers on a double-stack train, and 18K (20' equiv., so 9K 40-footers) on largest current container-ships, which this is admittedly not, the ratio is somewhere below 36/1, way more than 3.
