My in depth review of the 52mm Spitfire Conical Full wheels (99 duro).
I realized in retro it is indeed pronounced “con”-ical rather than “cone”- ical, which made more sense to me since it’s “cone” shaped- but go figure that’s English for you. Lol.

I love the conical fulls, definitely the best wheel I currently own and ride. However, I wouldn't say it is more stable in flips, mostly it is just a tiny bit heavier which is probably a bigger thing you'd ever notice than the literal shape on landing. I do notice it does ride over rougher ground easier for being wider. Best wheels you could get and also a true all-rounder in terms of street and park because of the width. Probably works fine in 101A on streets with some soft riser pads actually.
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Just to clarify I agree- I’m not saying it’s more stable during the flip, I’m saying it feels stable right before you do the trick or that it’s “less squirly” because the turning radius isn’t as tight- so it minimizes errors in positioning before jumping. :) glad you love the wheel!
@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX 3 жыл бұрын
@@Skatebetter Yeah, that makes more sense. Being wider does mean it tips over less easily to some extent (well, in theory). Mind you, I'm not saying you're wrong in how it felt different to you. It probably did. :) However in terms of tre flips and the friction involved though, I'd say it's a very negligible difference for the way tre flips scoop and pop. It might feel like there's more friction just for how they're a fraction heavier, but most tre flips have this fairly instant pop during the scoop. There's no real long wheel drag there. Braille's video on 'How to scoop 360 flips the easiest way tutorial' from 2014 has some really nice slow-motion close ups. And even the one time it seemed to drag, it's fairly obviously the whole board flicks opposite the direction of said drag, meaning at worst the added friction would actually benefit the tre flip trick. The more popped the tre flip is done, the less it could affect things. By the way, in terms of the physics involved and stability of a wheel, I probably should add a wheel that is more of a cube shape with all sides more equal (ie. a wide wheel), versus more of a oval shape / rectangular box (ie. a slimmer wheel), would be the more stable shape in terms of physics. Thing is, I have to doubt people could really tell beyond it just being heavier or having certain characteristics in sliding or riding over cracks. So basically, I'm agreeing it's different, I just wouldn't say it's a true negative if that's what was suggested. I've also noticed how some wheels, most notably Bones in certain durometers, feel insanely sticky. Way more so than Spitfire F4 full conicals 101a ever would. Not saying either one is better, but it depends a lot on what you compare them with. I also own some Ricta Chrome core 99a wheels and honestly, there are times where those feel like the less grippy more slidey wheel compared to the Spitfire F4 101a full conicals, despite being softer. I could swear those 99a wheels feel more like a 104a wheel. Thing is, when really put to the test, it's kind of obvious the 101a Spitfires slide better, but it doesn't always feel that way. Not to mention how durometer in a true sense, isn't a proper scale. It depends on calibration of the machine that measures it, when really the rebound in certain layers of a wheel can make it feel much softer, when it's kind of not. But I'm getting off topic hahah. Finding the right type of wheel is all about preference.
@Skatebetter

@@PHeMoX exactly king- I’m not saying it’s a negative, or that it’s even true, it’s just what I personally experienced :). I will say clearly you and I would both enjoy a “myth busters” where they explore the physics of wheels/setups lol. All the best!

I use these for slides and technical trucks. For the bowl here I use 62mm Orangatan Skiffs, 86a. There's some chewed up sections in the concrete bowl and going over them with my spitfires kills my speed. The skiffs size and duro are faster over chewed up concrete. A lot faster. Would like to try the 4s in a real a smooth bowl

I have been riding my 56mm 101 conical fulls again. I put them aside for awhile because I’m old (35 😂) and the terrain around me is rough asf. As I regained my confidence,after many years of not skating, I’ve realized that these things can go over rough terrain quite easily. Obviously not talking about cobblestones but I can push and even cruise around pretty easily on the rough surfaces around my neighborhood. My other setups either have dragons or OG classics 99a. OG classics are the best all around wheel ever made imo.

Really depends on the weight of the rider too. I'd say under 200 can do 52 conical fulls depending on what tricks and skill level youre at, and I'd say 225-250 plus is probably 54-56mm conical fulls. Basically I wouldnt recommend the conical full wheel to a new skater or a light skater, more experienced and heavier skaters can utilize them better.

How'd you like those regular conicals? The beefiness of the full kinda scares me, dont want my setup getting too heavy or non agile. It seems as if the conical fulls are the more accessible wheel now and they only make the regular conical in 52 54 and 56. The fulls are made in 51-56. Sucks cause I was looking to get the 53 mm 99 duro reg conicals but apparently they dont make them anymore. I'll prob go with 52 mm reg conicals
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 4 жыл бұрын
What are you riding now? I’m def enjoying the regular conicals A LOT (review coming soon). All the benefits of the fulls but a little more agile in my opinion. If you’re not used to a “fuller wheel” then I’d go with the 52 mm for sure. If you are really used to 53 mm you could go with the 54 and ride it down to a 53 (eventually) however once again a larger full wheel might feel really big and it might feel more natural to get the 52’s. Hope that helps my g.

@@Skatebetter I've always stuck with the 52mm classics. I feel like I could use a bigger wheel. I bumped my setup from 8.125 to 8.25. They used to make odd number sizes in the reg conicals a few years ago and now it's just 52 and 54. Even when I search for regular conicals it's like all the internet wants me to find is the fulls lol, kinda frustrating
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 4 жыл бұрын
@@clay_2792 Yea they're super rare- I got mine from Tactics a while ago. I think you'll really like the 52 Conical (if you can find it) as I enjoyed the classics also. You will be slightly more stable and lock in better for grinds. I think for most people the difference in surface riding area (between the conicals and the fulls) is so small that it seems "insignificant" so that's why most stores/sites just carry the full's.

Hey! I think if you are beginning than to be honest it probably won’t matter all too much. I would say 52mm 99duro wheels would be a standard size and hardness that should be good for almost any skating. Are you between any brands or shapes? If you are deciding between some options i could help provide more direction, but as for basic setup i feel like 52mm 99 duro is solid start!

After skating both i think conicals give some advantages on both street and park. I think the classics give you some street advantages but not much for parks/ramps. The conicals give you more grip, more stability (in general), more speed, and better lock in. I think it’s why a lot of skaters are gravitating towards them, but it’s all preference of course!

locomonty I’m going to be honest here- if powersliding is a priority i probably would not recommend this wheel. YES- it is possible to powerslide and if you’ve been skating for a while it’s not too difficult- but i wouldn’t say they are they “ideal.” Grabbing the 101 instead of the 99 might be a great compromise as those being harder should slide easier. I’m trying the regular conical next and they should be better than the fulls for sliding, but a regular classic shape or even the radial slims would probably be more ideal. Hope that helps!

@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 3 жыл бұрын
I think you’ll find they’ll be a little faster in both street and park, but also slide easier at the park (some people prefer this and others don’t). You’ll also most likely find your street cruisin will feel a little less smooth or more “vibrational” under your feet. Is it “too” icy? Not in my opinion- I’ve skated 101’s on both and it was really fun!

hi, i bought myself some classic spitfire, are they bad for street skate on surfaces that are not perfectly flat? I got them because I love to do tricks and I love to slide the skate. and the conicals seem to have too much grip for my taste
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 3 жыл бұрын
Hey my g- i think the classic shape will definitely give you less stability over rough terrain, but will allow you to slide easier depending on the duro. Also depending on what size wheel you got that could also have an effect (bigger wheels will go smoother over rough terrain). I found for powerslides the contact patch of the wheel isn’t as important as the duro (101 or higher duro being easier to slide). Hope that helps!

Personally, if it’s his first board, I’d go with something soft regardless of size. I got 78a on my cruiser and they’re so smooth and cushiony that it’s super fun to just ride around and carve. Obviously lower impact and more grip. Once he gets better I’d switch to harder, but I’d start there. I got another set of smaller 78a that I put on my “trainer” board. 😂. For when my friends’ kids or my nieces come by.

Happy to provide some guidance- usually for street skating a 99 duro is recommended. A softer wheel will allow you to go over cracks without “feeling” it as much so they are usually preferred for street skating. As for the size- if you’re new to skating I’d recommend 52’s, maybe 53’s. A bigger wheel WILL help you get over cracks, but you will have to put more power into your tricks (you’re deck will be higher from the ground), you run the risk of more wheel-bite, and the some people claim they can feel slightly heavier. My personal fav for street skating so far is 99duro and 52mm, however anything from 52-54mm and either 99 or 101 duro should get the job done! .

Hey great review! Loving how detailed your reviews are all the way from London. I’m thinking to buy some new wheels (I’ve never bought a set before just used what came with my board). I skate street and parks (concrete and wooden) and I’m still a beginner (I’m just getting my Ollie down). My friend has a set of conical wheels from a local skate brand and I think I enjoy the shape. I’m looking for something not too hard for street skating but not too soft to make landing ollies and other tricks hard. Can you help?
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 4 жыл бұрын
Happy to offer some suggestions and thank you for the all the love/support! I’m not sure if you’re asking what “brand” to buy, or the duro aka “hardness” or all of the above. If you’re still a beginner i would stick with a size of 52, maybe 53 but to me that’s pushing it. Bigger wheels make you go fast (which you don’t need as a beginner) and yield a higher pop but could also give you wheelbite so that’s why i recommend 52. As for the shape it probably doesn’t matter too much at the beginner stage, but a conical shape is totally fine- just know it will give you stability and help you lock in for grinds but could make learning scooping tricks more challenging. For the duro or hardness i would stick to 99. Anything harder will feel “rough” in the streets, and i actually like the grip you get in skateparks as you don’t slip out of tricks as much. If you want an actual wheel reccomendation, i mostly skate Spitfire, and any of the shapes would be fine honestly but I’d recommend you buy the Formula Four (most spitfires come in this material, it’s newer and is way better in my opinion). You could get conical, conical full, lock-ins, or tablet and they should all workout. Even the classic shape is great, i just can’t ever get it to lock in well, but a lot of pros skate it. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have other questions. :)

if you think conical full wheels feel fast which they definitely do....try 56mm 101a. That added contact patch over the other sizes is epic, that hardness of 101a for speed and just overall more street/board feel too its definitely a more cerebral experience just riding around of pt a to pt b especially super fast or bombing out a hill. I dont really care about the extra "vibration" the 101a has over 99a bc you generally feel your bearings moving faster and notice how hard the riding surface is and if there are any bumps etc you feel every little bump and change in grade in the surface youre riding if you love speed and slashing about and sliding 56mm 101a conical full is a new breed/feel from riding other wheels or smaller wheels. Im curious to how the radial full wheels feel at 56-57mm the last non conical full wheels i rode were some GOLD GOON radial full shape wheels from damn near 10 years ago. 360 flips definitely roll off with seemingly no effort with a radial full shape but the hard edge with the SFW/conical full shape means you can get a lot more scoop/lateral pressure on 360 flips from a radial/radial full shape. I 360 flip off the hard edge with conicals with more scoop, radials is more of a downward press that rolls off the side/curved sidewall of the wheel with radials.

Should I get conical or classic?
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on preference. In general if it’s your first wheel i would recommend a classic shape first, as most people find it very versatile. Unless you know you’re going to focus on a specific type of skating that’s probably a safe bet!

Hi I have bought the conical full 99 and 101,but I have problems with them wobbling on the truck about 0,5-0,7mm.I have used bearing spacers and tried with out,or are this wheels like this?
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 3 жыл бұрын
When you say wobbling I think your talking about the wheel sliding a little bit on the truck. The only way to stop this I know of would be to tighten the nut on the truck. However I also know you need a little bit of room for everything to slide as if you tightened the nut too much you could impeded movement of the wheel and bearing. Hope that helps!

@@Skatebetter Hi thanks for your response! @@palleh7742 of course! And interesting- i wonder if it’s an issue with the truck axle? I’m hearing they feel “loose” on the axle so maybe something there but honestly that’s all i could think of! Best of luck and hopefully someone else can speak to this issue :)

is conical full are good to powerslides?
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 3 жыл бұрын
I would say they are one of the more challenging wheels to powerslide because the wider surface causes more friction. However it’s all relative and the difference compared to powersliding other wheels is minimal. Hope that helps!

@Skatebetter 3 жыл бұрын
I personally think 53’s will be fine unless you’re skating doing some really big transition. For me 54’s feel huge but it’s all about preference. For hardness I think you can’t go wrong with 99 duro, it’s great for street but still grippy enough for the park with decent slidability. Hope that helps!

Cone-ical or con-ical?
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 4 жыл бұрын
I believe the actual pronunciation is “con-ical”, however the word is used to describe something that is “cone” like in shape so I’ve always felt like “cone-ical” is more digestible and makes more sense. Basically I’m saying English is wrong lol.

luis0037 The ones i skated are the 99 duro (52mm Kyle Walker edition). They used to be on most sites but now it seems they seem to be less available (mostly i see the 101 duro). I always recommended your local shop, but if that’s not an option i think they’re on Zumiez (Jamie got version) and some other random sites if you google search it. I hope that hopes!

Can you help me, i'm in confusion of choosinf a right wheels, i love to skate transition and bowl. What wheels are the best? I have my eyes on ricta wide, spitfire conical full, and slime ball vomit mini. Thx in advance
@Skatebetter
@Skatebetter 4 жыл бұрын
Happy to help as much as I can! I've never ridden Slime balls but I hear good things. I think the Conical fulls would def give you an advantage as the wider surface provides more speed, more stability, and less chance of slipping which is BIG for bowl/transition skating (I see a lot of pros skating them in trans as well). They should also lock in better. I skated a pair of Ricta's also and they felt alright but nothing too special. The Ricta's stay super white and Conical's do not if that's important to you. That's about all I can say for those wheels but I'm happy to answer any other questions you have.
