I think this is so important. I skate myself (well, I try) and I think it's so awesome when female skaters rock their own style instead of mimicking the male skaters. Don't get me wrong. Any style is fine, as long it is your own style that you feel comfortable with, no matter if it's baggy pants or a dress, or something completely different. I think that skateboard is so inclusive these days, in the sense that anything goes: genders, styles, ages - you name it. I think that skateboarding, though still is (sadly) primarily performed by men. The last open skateboard contest I attended, had about 70 competing skaters and none of them were female. My daughter also skates, and none of her female friends skates, but several of her male friends do. I actually started skating with my daughter and together we host a tiny youtube channel with the hope that we can inspire other girls as well as other elderly men - lol - to begin the same journey. im going to a skatepark for the first time soon. however the thing is people always say to me stuff like "can you actually skate?!" or "girls can't skateboard" SINCE WHEN WAS SKATEBOARDING SOMETHING GUYS DO????

Are those people skaters ? For me personally, doesn't matter who/what you are, and guys like me, like to see girls skateboarding and getting good. Everyone can get a skateboard and skate anywhere, that's the beauty, you don't need anyone approvals, only permission if it's a private property, what guys don't like in skatepark it's people who are learning getting in their way, and people who don't have attention to there's surroundings. And if you are learning, go sometime when the park is not full of people it's easy and less chaotic. And have fun, take friend or make a friend there.

If you guys take a minute to listen to her in the video, it's all about representation that stems from marketing. I know a lot of skaters are anti big establishment (support your local skate park!!!!), but they kind of influence who skates. When they advertise, typically towards men and boys, intentionally or not, they kind of exclude women. (they advertise towards boys because that's who they think they will get the most interest + sales out of.) Not saying this completely stops a woman from being able to pick up a skateboard, just that it makes it a big harder to imagine/relate to see yourself skating. Like, when you were a kid I'm almost positive your role model was someone who had attributes similar to you, gender, skincolor, maybe hair color, etc. It's just helps kid imagine themselves when their older. Anyway, this representation of only boys also can push some women away, if they feel uncomfortable being the odd one out, if they only see boys and men skating. If they represented both genders equally, I'm sure there would be quite the influx in skaters.

I went to a skate shop and saw a skate shoe I liked. I asked for my size in women’s and they didn’t have any women’s skate shoes. It really hurts that it seems they disclosed girls who may want good skate shoes so they can get into it.

Funny how men say that we're victimizin ourselves... I skateboard here in brazil, sao paulo, in poor place of the city. In my neighborhood (dont know how ti write this shit, anyway) im always the only girl at the bowl. 3 years ago, even less or more, every girl was humiliated, tear down by the old men. Every trick u try, there's always a look, an arrogant tip, the sexualization of our body. We can use the clothes we like, there's verbal abuse. So, think better your words. We suffer, always do.

Nathaniel My gf skates and she was very nervous once she came back from the skatepark. I asked her what happened and she told me, that a bunch of guys would purposely ride too close to her, that she got hurt by the ancle by one of the guys boards( which does happen every now and then, when the hall gets too full). First, she was sure, it happened just accidently, and changed her spot (where she had practised tricks) to another at the opposite of the hall, but then 3 of them would all of a sudden also change over to her, and again, she got hurt at the ancle... She was not saying anything to them, she was sure, that it was on purpose, bc they started laughing and did not want to cry in front of them. And one guy looked like that one bad guy from GoT, so she just rushed out of the skatepark and was really angry... idk why these guys would do so...There are 3 girls that she usually skate with, but they all live far away, so I accompany her whenever she goes to the skatepark.

skateboarding is not a man's sport. its might be marketed more towards lads because mostly boys have CHOSEN to skate so adverts must appeal to their MARKET. nobody ever said women cant skate, its just girls mostly CHOSE not to skate. the sport just naturally pulled men in ffs. there are men who like wearing makeup but companies dont launch massive marketing campaigns with guys putting on mascara lol but no-one is saying they cant. its all a matter of CHOICE, so simple! theres no prejudice!
