Nice work Kerry. You look relaxed and having fun turning which is great! I need to get one of those remote switches for my dust collector! Also, I wear standard 30db foam earplugs when turning to save what heating I have left. Too many years in the auto body industry has taken its tool on my ears. Cheers! Stuart

I‘m a friend of Damien (what a legend) who also works with recycled skateboards. I use carbide turning tools, because the wood is hard, and each layer of skateboard has 6 glue joints in itself already. I would be more at the sharpening station than the lathe with traditional tools, but you saw that for yourself 😅 Stellar work nonetheless - great seeing a professional working with my material of choice!

@@MarcoEckhardt thanks heap Marco. I pushed the tools a bit on this project and could have benefited a few trips to the CBN wheel. 🙈 I'm really glad you liked the video, and thank you for leaving a comment, mate. Kez

Great job, Kezza! That little bowl looks amazing! I'm not sure I would have had the patience to use traditional tools ... I would most likely have reached for the carbide right from the jump. That finish looks really nice, too

If you're looking for a similar visual effect, but don't want to beat up your lathe tools, there's a material called Spectraply, which is essentially dyed birch. I've turned Spectraply before, and it turns wonderfully. Skateboard decks on the other hand, are brute tough.

Love watching your videos, with a range of interesting things and a touch of education/training. In terms of passing on some HARD wood, I've recently turned an old bit of Gippsland Red Gum that was an OLD fencepost into a nice little piece, and I have a companion piece ready to go. Also I have what I think is a bit of 130-ish year old messmate that was a verandah post at a friend's place where I refurbished his verandah a few years back, and scored some of the reject posts. I made a few candlesticks out of some of that. Happy to cut a piece of that for you to try as well. But... Where do I send them?

Thank you so much for your feedback, Peter. I really appreciate it. That sounds like some tough timber for sure. I saw your email and will respond to it now. I'm sorry for the late response. Cheers, Kez

Morning Kezza from cold Melbourne! Great video by the way - its exciting to see how it comes out. Question for you tho - i often find when i turn hard/dry wood that the shavings are really hot! is that any indication that the tool isnt sharp enough, or my cuts too deep?
@KerryCorney
@KerryCorney 2 ай бұрын
Good morning! Both, tool might be getting a bit blunt or taking to much off. Try making lighter cuts and regularly check that the bevel is sharp. I've turned rock-hard timber before, and it's possible that the material coming off the tool is getting hot due to the nature of the timber. I hope that helps. - Kez
