The only sport I would say is harder to start is surfing. First off you have to be by the ocean (for the most part), then going on a day with good waves and not big crowds is very hard to do. Once you do that you are being battered by the waves the whole time, just to not know which waves to go for! It's like skating but the park is constantly moving and throwing you around!

I agree, surfing is way harder. For one, you're limited to places that has waves which is basically only costal. Second, needing to know how to swim and be comfortable in an ocean. Next the knowledge of waves and how they break. How to paddle and stand up, and be able to balance and not fall off right away.

I'd say this is probably the most technically demanding "normal" sport. Ice skating is relatively easier than skateboarding, but doing so in a context where you navigate through others while keeping a puck in control may be more difficult. The benefit to skateboarding is that it isn't a competition. One can take time to get the perfect run at something and can control variables.

I beg to disagree. I do skateboarding, but even so, the real barrier is getting ON the equipment, and I rather get on top of a skatebord as a newbie, than riding a bicycle without any experience. You can even get on your knees on a skateboard, but with a bike you even need training wheels when you start. Hell, if we go EVEN further, try entering into motorsports without any driving experience. Again, I've been skateboarding most of my life, but I REALLY feel the need to be fair here. Skateboarding is PRETTY hard, but doesn't have the hardest entry learning curve. I'm willing to bet that stretching the definition, there are others I have not even mentioned.

Great vid John. I believe golf, yes golf, is just as "entry level" hard as skateboarding. Just like golf you really can't learn much with cheap golf clubs. I agree, good skaters are basically acrobats. True mastery at any sport probably requires a similar amount of practice and hard work. Ice Hockey is also a very hard sport and a barrier to entry. If you've never played but think you can skate because you've gone to a few open skates or holiday rinks in your town and you didn't fall, you have no idea what level of skating and technical ability it takes when you're playing a game. NHL players, like professional skateboarding, make it look very easy but all that transitional skating, stick handing, and shooting all at the same time requires insane amounts of training. You basically have to learn to walk again, anyone without a disability can get on a field and run, kick a ball, catch a ball, etc. maybe not with any skill but they will at least be able to go through the basic motions. Put someone in ice skates, give them a stick and puck and they will spend 99% of their time just chasing the puck around, skating past it, missing it, and falling lol. I also think the constant beating your body takes doing both skateboarding and ice hockey adds to the difficulty because it's a reason many don't even try or quit early.
@donovanhays2 жыл бұрын
I find learning Ice Hockey as an adult is very "gamified" as well. There are so many individual skills to learn, then you learn to put them together, and then you learn to actually use them in a game. Skating alone has so many technical "moves" then there's stick handling, passing, and shooting which are extremely technical, especially shooting. Then you put those together with your technical skating skills. You may be able to stick handle in a straight line, but then attempt to change directions quickly and you'll find the puck still going in the direction you were previously going in or you're so focused on keeping control of the puck that you skating skills diminish by 50%.

@Sdanko952 жыл бұрын
@@Goldtacto Thats true! I think from a professional skill level surfing is probably a little easier but to learn to just pop up on a wave can be extremely difficult (can take people up to a few sessions). Plus the amount of actual time on a surfboard is directly related to being able to stand up while it is a lot easier to learn how to ride a skateboard right off the jump. Also the comfortability in the water and maneuvering through surf (and reading waves) is an added skill in itself. I would say both sports have similar attributes though

I don't know why but no matter what I do I can't get over the fear of landing a trick then falling. Even with protective stuff on I can't commit.

The only other sport that I feel this way about is golf. You watch pros or people on KZbin and you think it's easy. Then when you try it, the club is alot smaller the ball is tiny, tons of variables including wind, ball spin, lie angle, grass thickness. Not to mention it costs hundreds of dollars to even hit your first golf ball with the clubs and green fees. Golf is so hard, on par with skateboarding

Train for an amateur fight in any fight sport. Skateboarding feels like walking through a field of roses compared to Fighting for me

He means anyone can throw a punch/kick and dodge in less than a day, but tricks in skateboarding take days weeks months even years to get down. Starting skating is harder than starting other sports

What about supercross, motocross, and freestyle mx? Not hating on skateboarding, I do both and have more serious injuries on the bike then a board. I am biased for dirt bikes so I’d like to hear more. Especially when learning the sport, dirt bikes are more complicated and of course a motors and metal rather then wood.

I can never understand how you get so much balance in your tricks it’s so amazing . It’s almost like you have no weight because whenever I try technical tricks I feel weight down to my board . You have so much skill

Skateboarding is definitely difficult you have to have very good stamina as well as some muscles in your legs wouldn't really help with flipping going up around etc but it is very fun very rewarding

If we look at how many people are able to ride around on skateboard, that's a high number. Maybe similar to people who can keep a ball high for 3 times without hands. Ollies...much more select club. Kick flips...then you're into "epic" territory, at least in my city in the late 80s. I had this one thing I did better than most. One foot manual. Goofy regular, foot over rear truck. I could barely ever ollie so I kciked into the manual but I could do that one thing at least. Don't even know why. My freakishly long legs maybe? Or I was the only one who cared.

John what's the name of that song you used to use in some of your videos maybe like 5 years ago? Super catchy with witty/interesting lyrics that I can seem to think of. It was mellow and I wanna hear it. Sorry I know this is vague. Just going out on a limb

Technically speaking. Most people can learn other sports. Skateboarding is definitely different, everyone can learn to ride a bike, but not everyone can learn to skate.
