honestly as a guy who works at zumiez and has been skating for almost 12 years now, it really depends on where you are. when i was a kid zumiez really helped me get into skating and whatnot, but that’s bc where i live, skaters only have zumiez as a skate shop, there’s none around me at all. so i agree for the most part, but if you’re in a place i was and still am, zumiez helps a lot. it also gives skaters a job they don’t wanna blow their brains out at 🤷‍♂️

I went to zumeiz for my first board and they seemed like legit skates who knew what they were talking about, but then i realized the the workers recommended stuff that was super expensive to make me spend more, like they said the best shoes were the $70 doller ones but then later i saw shoes that were the same just all black, and only for $30 dollers

@soysausesamurai1342 2 жыл бұрын
@@quinnrobinson3776 true that may be I am a bit guilty of also showing the more expensive options not because I want you to buy it but to show you there are more expensive/longer lasting products and skating most definitely not cheap but being able to spend an extra $10/$20 on a good sturdy pair of skate shoes can make a world of difference than constantly coming back and buying the same cheap pair over and over

In my opinion, Zumiez has good clothes, shoes, and even some good graphics on the decks. But sometimes I think that the "Skate Culture" can be a little stupid. The people working at places like Zumiez just want a job. They don't need to be an expert at skateboarding to work there. And sometimes there is no "local skate shop" so Zumiez, West 49, etc. Is the better option.

The real deal is that local skate shops have been developing the skate culture and skate scene in their area. With out local skate shops there would be no skaters. The products that zumiez sell are targeted for skaters. You see the picture now? Zumiez is trying to take the hard work that skate shops have made and profit themselves without giving back

not gonna lie I'm a manager at a Zumiez we try our best to host events for the skaters and for anyone who just wants to hangout and spend time with people in that age range but it kind of sucks paying the most of that outta pocket and it would be pretty cool to get some form of grants so we can help build community. one of our old co-workers opened a local skate shop downtown and we've been telling the locals to go there for decks. also i know not every employee skates but that doesn't some some of my subordinates from being excited to learn about the anatomy of a skateboard to help the lil homies get started with skating and most of the time they end up picking up a board themselves.

While I can agree that they may not be the best choice, for many, it's the only choice. My son was not a skater before he bought his first board, but he wanted to go to Zumiez, because he was familiar with them. The store we went to was very knowledgeable and did a great job. As a skater myself, I was able to give some insight to the type and how to pick out a board. When I got back into boarding, I bought my board from there. I could have gone online, but I chose not to. Yes, Zumiez is a corporate owned store, but people need to understand the mission of Corporate America before entering it. Their goal is to make money, as with any business. Small business should be supported, but the consumer needs to educate himself before spending their time and money. Every car salesman doesn't know cars, every beautician doesn't know cosmetics. Skateboarding is no different. Do your homework as a consumer and spend your money accordingly

I post clips all the time of people including myself and other coworkers skating the store. We even play customers in skate 💀. We carry Welcome, Hockey, Spitfire etc. All these reasons sound like something some kid said and never went into a store lol. The VP for California grew up skating and is a friend of mine. Zumiez scammed me on numerous occasions when I was starting off skateboarding as a youth. I went into the store as a young ambitious skater and all I wanted was to get some new wheels on my skateboard and they told me that I wasn't able to replace my wheels then they told me they'd hook me up with a brand new setup and ended up giving me a used beat up complete that one of their employees were planning on throwing away which was a 8.38 and I was skating a 7.75 at the time, then they ended up taking my board away and gave it to some other older dude in the store who wanted it. This killed the ambitious nature inside of me, it killed my love for skating as a kid and I never was able to get that back due to how devastated I was. As somebody who skates I personally don’t mind zumiez because where I’m from there is no local skate shops cause skating is not popular around here and I do enjoy their clothes ❤❤❤

I only had the two options where i live, Zumiez and a place called Industrial. Industrial was where all the actual skaters shopped, Zumiez was where the skaters Gf's shopped.

Not to mention, how expensive it is. Legit, I was at the mall for Christmas shopping, and I popped in the store to look for a tech deck for a friend, but a single board was like 24 dollars. I went to target and got a pack of 10 for 30 bucks.

I was confused until I realized my Zumiez is different than the ones you talk about. Just cause other people say you shouldn’t go to somewhere doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. My Zumiez is very nice and there is an employee who does skate there who I am friends with and we talk about our progress when I go to buy clothes.

FastForward has a skate team and they were all pretty good. FF was a big named shop with small shop vibes and Zumiez ruined it all. They're just a glorified Cans store; selling more apparel(shirts, pants, etc) than they do a plethora of skate shoes and a huge supply of decks, trucks and other skateboarding needs. Walking into Zumiez now feels like Pacsun. If you put a wall of decks in Pacsun, and you were unblindfolded in the middle of either one; you wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.

I don't even skate but they have the most random high quality shirts and hoodies. I don't really buy the hoodies but I know that I like the designs on them. I do buy shirts though because of the variety and fitting. I am also not a poser, as I said before I don't skate. I don't like to buy any pants from Zumiez because I feel like as soon as I wear something like that, I'll immediately either look like a poser or a skater. I like "vintage" clothes like tees and sweatshirts, but its super hard thrifting in 20 different places just to find one stained vintage tee shirt in a size too big.

I was so lucky that I found a great local skate shop for my first board. I recommend Insanity board shop in San Antonio, TX for anyone who happens to be in the area. Zumiez did get me seriously thinking about skating though before I got my board so I can give them that much.

As an Australian individual we don't have Zumiez retailors available likely anywhere in the country, we do however have a brand known as Fast Times which is a company owned by Zumiez, From what I can tell every single employee I have encountered within a fast times is a die hard skater and is are all seriously cool people Honestly love the place. Though I frequent a variety of skate shops other than Fast Times its honestly quite the pleasant experience when I do.

Worked at a zumiez for a couple years as a teen cause my older brother was the manager. I didn’t know anything about skateboarding, but I mostly just folded clothes and cleaned. That job unfortunately has made me generalize every skateboarder as just a complete insufferable ball sniffer. If you show up to a zumiez and expect grade A skateboard service, you’ve probably taken too many falls. Half the staff that worked there never knew shit either, it was just super chill. Zumiez is identical to any other typical retail store… they just so happen to have skateboards. Not hard to see that lol

Growing up in SoCal we always went to the local shops. I didn’t even k ow that a chain skate shop existed. Now in Montana it’s a sad scene. Zumiez is the closest thing there is here so it’s all online shopping for skating if you want anything other than some Vans.

There was a zumiez at the mall in the my hometown and there was also a barber who made a back closet a little skate shop and even sold bmx bikes and I always went to the barber cuz he treated it like a skate shop where he barely made money if not just made his money back just to be able to get more kids boards/bikes! but I ALWAYS went to him for board instead of zumiez! Plus he had better prices! I swear you can get the same board at zumiez for way higher price than a skateshop! May not be like that anymore but still how messed up...

I’ve been skateboarding for about a year now and I only have 2 “skate shops” near me, Zumiez and BC Surf and Skate and I go to both and all the employees I’ve met are super chill but the Zumiez employees definitely don’t know as much about skateboarding but they want to learn and most have boards. And the workers at the “real” skate shop are super cool and insightful about what brand of deck I should try out next or good for asking what shoes to get.

The only time I bought from zumiez was because I was looking for this exact board (the enjoi whitey panda), I had wanted it since I was little. Not a single local shop carried it, so I sulked my way over to zumiez and what do you know, there it was. Such a feeling of dispair and shame as I was standing in the checkout line….. went and got some indies from the local shop afterwards to make myself fell better!!!😂

My friend made me buy something from Zumiez cause I lost a bet, so I was gonna buy Indy’s and told the guy if I can get 139s and he was like, “I don’t have 139s but I might have 136s”, I gave him the most confusing face because there’s no such thing as 136s and I told the dude I can clearly see the 139s and he told me there is no trucks called 139s and so I just bought a baker board cause I didn’t want to deal with him

i worked there. every point you made is true - i never learned how to build a board nor did i know anything about skate culture besides old tony hawk games i used to play as a kid , i literally couldn’t even give advice because i had no fucking idea - i’m not saying the company should only hire skaters but they should have atleast taught me some basic knowledge 🤷‍♀️ usually i ended up telling our customers at the time to go to our local skate shop instead because by the time i quit i realized that many people never supported our local shop nearby - also literally zumiez could literally help with skate culture such as involvement in skate events like you said or since they’re a major company they could sponsor events such as olympic skaters??? and yes we barely had any skate supplies for our skaters! we also had so many posers and skate culture was so bland because of it , many of my high school skate friends only came for the empyres 😅😅 it actually sucked.

I bought my first board in a bc skate shop in a shopping mall like 30mins away. Then everything got weird. Kids seemingly wanted to be either emo or wow characters or producers overnight. They also opened a giant zumiez face to face with the skate shop, they just closed up and left. They didn't even host a sale. It was like 6months later, I went to walk around one day and it wasn't there anymore. Zumiez was vast and mostly empty. With blink 182 shirts and other skate punk memorabilia visible from the windows. Then last week I decided to start skating again and I bought a bunch of discounted shoes, including 2 pairs of ishod weirs for $50 each from zumiez. Nike is another company that brought vanity and corporatism to skateboarding. Most other skate companies are like three possums in a trench coat.

This video gives me "name 3 songs" vibes, what's wrong with someone being new or just liking skateboarding but not knowing how to skate?, it can get new people into it and that in the long run means more money for the brands owned by skaters, shaming employees who most of the time just need a job is awful, most of the people who shop at Zumiez just like the clothes and that's okay, people can wear whatever they want.
