You couldn't have timed this one better! I've skated over some hair at something and it's got into one of the wheels! Now I can give them all a good clean. Thankyou xx

For my outdoor bearing maintenance I rinse my bearings in mineral spirits because it will leave a slightly oily residue and they won’t flash rust before you reoil them. It also makes it so they collect dust on this outside. Which in my opinion may help prevent dust from getting in the bearings as it cakes on the outside. I’d rather it stick to the outside than find it’s way in that small gap around the nut. I’m also a huge believer in bearing spacers for many reasons but that’s a big topic of debate in the skate community. If they perfectly match the inside gap of the hub you can really clamp everything together and lock your bearings in perfect alignment and there is never any binding especially skating on edges and what not. I think they also help prevent bearing sockets from wallowing out over time too. I also use bearing cleaning and service as an opportunity to rotate my wheels to help ensure they get even wear. I have them all numbered on the inside of the wheel with a magic marker and will write down on a piece of paper before I take them off where they’re all located. I will rotate them front to back, switch skates, criss cross them, etc.
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
Definitely want to keep the dust out!! I do have spaces for my more high end wheels and if they’re provided I will put them in. I have to say I don’t have a system for rotating my wheels but I change wheels very often so they get a good rotation that way. Sounds like you’ve got a great “skatenance” system worked out.

Hello Katie! I'm buying my first pair of roller skates next week, so I've been binging all your videos 😂 I'm probably only gonna use them to vibe on the sidewalk and get places (bc if I'm gonna go to work on foot, better do it with style!), and I'm super excited. Thank you for sharing so much information with us, can't wait to get good thakns to all your videos 😂💖

I love using my skates to travel places, walking is so boring! 😂 😜

I tried Monkey Lube not too long ago. I like it a lot because it cleans and also lubricates the bearings. And all I have to do it put the bearings onto my bearing contraption thingy shake, let it sit, wipe down, and I'm done. I don't have to pop off the cover either. And I've tried it on bearings that you aren't supposed to reuse, but I still feel like it worked with those too. Definitely recommend as someone who also hates cleaning bearings.

Dawn works well on wheels and doesn’t have a residue. I’ll soak my wheels for about 30 minutes or so and scrub them with a scrubby brush then rinse them under water and they’re good to go once they dry. They usually look brand new.

Very informative, thx. I ordered my first quads last week, so hopefully they arrive soon. I've been inlineskating for a year now, after 20years, but i still got the hang of it. this on the other hand will be a very big adjustment 😅. I did order softer cushions, but they are only barrels... Powerdyne magic universal. I hope they will fit 🤞. Thx for the very nice videos 😇

Good thinking. If your plates are older they may benefit from new cushions as they definitely deteriorate over time. What skates do you have as cushions are skate specific.

Do you also clean your ZZ or other covered bearings the same way you cleaned your open bearings? Oh and that was such a great video on Skatenance, not too long but SO much information.
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. I never clean my zz bearings. As they’re sealed I just run them as it. It’s surprising how long they last. If they do start to get crunchy it’s possible to pop the shields off but then they’re open bearings and they’ll get dirty much much quicker.
@mickaellan7842 Жыл бұрын
Quick question: do i have to clean zz bearings and can i use multipurpose oil to oil them(Like the one i use for my bike)?
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
No need to clean zz bearings as they’re fully sealed the cleaning fluids won’t be able to enter the bearings. Make sure to not use anything like WD40. Sewing machine oil is a good bearing lubricant.
@johnrobert6127 Жыл бұрын
Just put lock tight on the thread other wise if you keep cranking down in the screws or bolts you will stretch the thread or strip it and then you will have to buy a new set of skates.

So, this is probably a silly question but is the king pin only touched to change these components? Something online said I may have to loosen it to loosen the trucks on my Impalas.
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
To loosen the trucks you need to turn the nut so it moves down the kingpin and closer to the floor. Always turn the nut a little at a time. As a small turn can make a huge difference.

Katie, can i ask if you find the kimset gold park skates sizing small? I've just bought a pair and had to return them twice (1st ive got my size, 2nd half size larger) & they feel still too tight lenghtwise (my feet are narrow), these feel way smaller than my Moxi phanter ones... now im not sure what size to get anymore... 😅 Do you also had to size up? Ps. I dont live near any shop to go try them before I buy...
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
Have you measured your feet? Although saying this according to my measurements I’d be a 7! Which I knew would be huge as I have a friend who skates in a 6 and her feet are bigger than mine. Based on her experience I purchased a 5 and they work great for me. So my feet measure a 248mm and I usually wear a 255mm skate and I have narrow feet.

Can I use my bike grease for the bearings?
@Skatie7 ай бұрын
It wouldn’t recommend it. I used speed cream. You can also use sewing machine oil. Anything like WD40 is too thin and will spin out of the bearings

Am I dumb for using my hair dryer to dry my skates out after I go an hour+?
@Skatie7 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t recommend heat. It can dry out the material too quickly and cause damage. I just leave my skates with the tongues pushed back to air. If you find they get smelly I’d recommend boot banana.

Sorry. They are little dust covers. I’m not entirely sure they’re a thing that’s available anymore. They used to be sold purely as pretty gold covers with matching gold nuts. The zero nuts that are available now cover the front of the bearing but not the bearing on the back of the wheel. I tried to do a google search for something the same but nothing comes up. My skate equipment is so vintage ! 😂
