And here we go! It's launch time for Age of Sigmar 4.0 and Skaventide and I cracked open my copy to let you guys know if this huge set of Stormcast and Skaven miniatures is worth the price! I received my creator copy from ‪@officialwarhammer‬ pretty late so there'll be painting videos coming soon, but I wanted to show you guys the contents and a review today anyway! I used to cut all the pegs from Easy-to-build miniatures but I have since found a better method. Tip of the old Mold line remover (the one with aluminium handle) is perfect size to make the sockets little bit wider. Making the sockets wider allows to keep the pegs for structural support and sub-assembly purposes.

Thanks for the video! This was a great preview of the box. Something I've been doing with push-fit models is cutting the pegs at an angle. They go together a bit easier and line things up nicely with minimal gaps caused by not getting the peg in far enough. Also, you rarely lose a peg when trying to pull a model apart for any reason before gluing. Downside is you usually can't just leave them unglued if that's your preference.

I usually cut the "hole" part of the push-fit mechanism - like I put my nippers into the hole and cut parallel to the mechanism. Prevents that pneumatic pressure to talk about. Cutting the peg is an option, as you say, but I do find some easy-to-build models just fit better if the push-fit bits are used, even if glued.

Cost saves tip, the Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner is nearly the same via MSDS as Extra Thin. Works just as well but costs half as much. Great for refilling your bottles

If you really have a problem with air bubbles in the push fit you can just shorten the peg a little or score a line down the side to give the air a way to escape. I think think the push fit concept is less about not needing glue and more about automatic juxtaposition of the different pieces. It’s a lot easier to put together if the pieces aren’t sliding around or getting attached at the wrong angle.

I've hated pegs since the Necrons from the Indomitus box and I usually remove them. For the Gryphound, the current ones I have are on the same base size as the Stormcast, 32mm I think. I bought a box of them for AOS 2.0 a few years ago.

20:20 You could always do what I did for my Wood Elves (counts as Wanderers / Cities of Sigmar in AoS) since squares have been bumped up to 25 mm now. Base your Skaven on 25mm MDF bases, then drill a pair of 2mm holes in them. Then take a square base since the circle fits exactly inside it,drill holes in exactly the same spots using the circle as a template. Plop in some magnets and bam, easy swap between circle game and square game. Even easier if you have a laser cutter and can program it to cut those circles out when making the bases. For the larger things like the tree men with oval / rectangle bases since one doesn't fit inside the other I had to glue them onto a piece of cork tile, then magnetise the cork so it could just click onto either the oval or rectangle.

For push to fit models I have found that shortening the peg and filing the end of the peg bottom edge a little helps get the flushest fit possible.

You might think the options included for the starter set models is just GW being nice... in reality, this is GW making efficient business decisions. Why produce two moulds for the same unit, when they can just make one? This is the direction GW starter sets have been moving in over the last decade, across both AOS and 40k, and there's no signs of stopping: - 1st edition - every single non-hero/monster got a multi-part version of the kit. - Soul Wars - Sequitors, Evocators, Castigators, and Grimghast Reapers all got a different multi-part version after the box. The Glaivewraith Stalkers and Celestar ballista only managed to get an alternate push-fit version (the former of which with fewer in number than the starter set), while the Chainrasp Hordes were left with the exact same sprues they got in the box. - Dominion, only the Gutrippaz, Annihilators, and Boltboyz got a multi-part version (the latter of which being a little odd, since it's mostly just aesthetic options except for the champion.) Everything else is sold with the same sprues that we saw in the starter sets. I very much expect to see this continue even more here. In fact, looking at all the sprues in this box, only the Reclusian one seems likely to get a multi-part kit at this stage. The Prosecutors may be lucky to get the 40k Termagant treatment, with an added weapon sprue to give them those throwing hammers.... But the liberators, clanrats, and Rat Ogors are basically a given to remain unchanged. Jezzails could go either way.

The Gnawbeast and Clawlord mini's could be easily separated and with some minor conversion work make a decent rat ogre and a Foot Hero/Lord. The Clawlord could be very easily converted to have his right foot on a tactical rock and the left is flat(ish) so you could chop it at the ankle, the only sculpting would be gap filling and clipping some toenails haha, just needs some crotchal chainmail/cloth.

Hey could I ask you about painting the black templars? I have my marine in chaos black primer and I have dry necron compound, layer stormhost silver, or layer iron breaker which one would you recommend?

I’d prefer a drybrush of leadbelcher as it’s nice and dark and subtle. Necron compound is for sure to bright. You mite get away with iron breaker. Maybe do a test piece first.

I would love this box. I actively play Stormcast Eternals, and the Skaven might be the best thing GW has created. It's too expensive for me right now, but I would love to get it in the future. No, my comment is this: for a box that has them right in the title, it seems a little silly that the art on the front of the box doesn't depict, you know, a Skaven. If I'm new to the hobby and I haven't engaged with anything yet and I see this in the store, I don't know what a Skaven is. I probably don't assume it's the big, armored badass on the front because it doesn't feel like something that would be called a Skaven. But then if the person on the cover isn't, then what is a Skaven? Again, they might be the best thing GW has made. Easily one of the most iconic fantasy races in their properties and even in the wider fantasy genre. I just feel like they should play that up a bit more. I wouldn't think so. If it's anything like the Dominion or Leviathan sets, GW will overproduce and we'll end up with spares hanging around for months/years after. Failing that - there's always eBay.

What I do with the push fit rods is snip off the first 1/4” to 1/2” & then file down to a tapered point. That lets me still use them for an assembly guide, but also lets them go together easier (less pressure required).

Or buy tamiya airbrush cleaner instead which is essentially the same thing only cheaper. For pushfit I sometimes like to cut off 1-2mm of the pin and then put glue on it, but usually I do as you and just snip them off.

I don’t understand how GW made push to fit models harder to build than regular multi part kits. They’re tolerating for hole and peg is terrible. They should be. “D” shaped to allow air to vent. Bandai has a whole range of push to fit. They go together smoothly and some of the sprues have multiple colours of plastic and different types.

@@corbingovers7559aos is so bad though. It has no charm or light in it from what I’ve seen, none of the models look like they had heart put into them (but that’s problem with all modern GW models) and it just cannibalises the much better much more lore rich fantasy

I'm still always baffled that despite cutting so many models into stupid awkward parts, they never manage to do it in a way to hide the nubs or mold lines. If a guy's toe is going to be a separate piece could it maybe just not be attached to the sprue by the flat top of the nail, and have a line right across all the details?

Shame they didn't get more love in the rules for old world, I don't know how you could make a competitive army with them but who cares if you're just playing for fun and love skaven. My brother is making a skaven army and I look forward to running him down with my orcs

Re: Push fit and pegs. You are wrong!! Leviathan was the pinnacle of the latest model design - and as I don't have Skaventide for another week or two, Leviathan is my baseline. Not only do you not need glue (cleaner, easier, chaper), but the actual fit and lack of mould lines is the best I've ever seen GW models. Perfect for beginners, and nice and friendly even for 35 year hobby vets like myself. Dry fitting means you can test the assembly before you commit, and see if there are any sub-assemblies for painting, or massive gaps to fill, and plan accordingly, without the mess and pain of glue, or temporary spot gluing etc. If you are a big converter, or kit basher, then clipping a few more pegs will not deter you - but for those who want easy/simple assembly, this design is the new winner.

Man. I love your videos but honestly? A review where you outright say that you're not going to talk about the price or value of the product, and anyone who cares about that should leave is kind of a useless, biased review. It's a valid concern and a valid thing to talk about, and leaving out one of the worst parts of the product and then trying to pretend the review is balanced is pretty strange.

Appreciate the comment but that’s not what I said. My point was the price is what is it, there’s no point complaining about the figure. The review is about whether the box set is worth that price to an individual who might be willing to pay it. I can’t do anything about the price, I can talk about the contents of the box and tell you guys what I think of them and it’s up to you whether you feel like the price is worth it. I can’t even say what everyone’s budget is, to some people it will be too much to pay, to someone else, they’ll won’t bat an eye at paying it. It’s not up to me to decide about the price, I made the videos help you guys decide if it’s worth it to you.

I prefer when the model is just cool looking and it's not immediately obvious what gender it is-means it's just good armour as opposed to designing something to purposefully make it undeniably female because half the armour is missing so you can see body parts better.
