First read Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond and was impressed by his work. So much to unpack in that interview, but every time I hear an intellectual like Jared Diamond speak, I feel a little bit better about humans - and a little worse.

Have you read his book Upheaval? I couldn't get past page 40 cause he was still introducing the topic... after 40 pages. And I got mad & put the book down. I hope Guns, Germs & Steel is written better. Though I may get Status Anxiety from Alain De Botton I'm still not sure!

Rising sea level of three meters or ten foot over the next hundred years is our main concern but building a global infrastructure of storing more water on land, especially drought stricken areas would reduce that threat. Producing meat from stem cells and hopefully ending the domestic and wildlife meat trade is something we need to do. It is the speed of transmission via air travel that we need to control. The common cold virus emerged from birds to camels but took hundreds of years to reach North America.

The collapse of Easter Island population was due to the diseases brought in by Europeans, I though this was already an established fact and was shocked to hear from Jared Diamond this ancient "tale". Again, saying that a pandemic cannot cause the collapse of civilizations is ignoring the history of pandemics.

We've been playing "follow the leader" for so long, it's difficult for people to unite and say "no" to authority, especially when it means they have to pay more in taxes and fuel costs in the short term. Just look at Americans whining about gas prices above $4/gallon when Europeans have had that for ages. Meanwhile it's like 50ȼ/gallon-equivalent to charge an electric car.

I was camping near Twisp, WA, and I heard a loud sound. I looked up, and I saw the branch of an evergreen tree waving in the air. This was not very interesting, but I thought that I might check it out. To my unbelief, a large evergreen tree had just toppled over. The base was just a foot and a half high, where the tree had separated itself from it’s base. The rest of the tree was on the ground. About 50 feet of it. All I know is that there was a lot of red in the stump of that tree. It was a totally calm day. No wind at all. I could not believe it. I looked, and to be sure, small bushes were crushed under the newly fallen tree. Take from this what you will, I am still puzzling about it.

As a fellow Los Angeleno, I’d love to hear more about his bunker. We can’t use generators in high density residential areas. So, is he using a Tesla solar battery to power the bunker? Storing enough water to sustain two people for two months (with a 20+ year shelf-life) that is affordable to hard to find. What brand and type of container did he choose to use? How does he secure and cool his bunker? Air conditioning would require at least one Tesla solar battery dedicated just to that alone. With the “big one” on the horizon, we can never be prepared enough

Japan resident of 37 years (from the U.S.) and former 'eclectic' Associate Professor speaking here. I am a fan or Jared Diamond, and bought both the paperback version and Kindle version of 'Collapse'. A couple of points regarding the talk here: 1 - Risks to humanity as a species ... nuclear, climate, resource depletion, inequality ... as Prof. Diamond correctly pointed put, are all limited to our self-destructive potential. But 'cautious optimism,' because we face none of the threats that caused extinction of species in the past such as super-volcanoes, astroids, sudden polar shift, etc.? I'm just wondering what makes our second of the geological time scale so exceptional? 2 - Although I often refer to Prof. Diamond's great final paragraph about the failed Norse Greenland colony in 'Collapse', if I am not mistaken, one distinction I did not see in the book were dysfunctions of societies directly correlated with scale. Three socio-psychological constructs that I've found useful in understanding our self-destructive tendency includes 'Dunbar's Number' ... the correlation between prefrontal cortex size and the number of people we can relate to as unique individuals, the roots of morality as being grounded in empathy between social species (Frans de Waal), and the consistent, small, but salient percentage of 'dark-triad' personality types in any population ... the narcissists, machiavellian opportunists, and morphologically defined psychopaths. Although we all fall somewhere on a spectrum of behaviors associated with those traits, a few people are genetically predisposed to behave more consistently on that end of the spectrum ... rather than more nurturing or altruistic behavior. Just a guess, but in triangulating between those three above variables, population size might be directly correlated with corruption due to the increased opportunity niches for the steady percentage of 'dark triad' personality types in any population. I am guessing the greater the empire, the harder the fall ... and as a species, we may have already reached a tipping point ... not unlike that failed Norse colony in Greenland.

No one who ever existed or who exists now has ever truly been free.Thàt is because no one consulted us before being placed in this thing called life. Also, most of what happens to us in life is out of our control. I do not worry about those things. One of the few things that we DO control is our reaction to the things that happen to us. Thus, my reaction to this video is simply not to worry about it.

I like that view.. but some effot has to take place for us all to share similar attitudes. Then this is about understanding, which in turn comes from information being passed down. We then find a problem. Some information is either a secret, only to be passed down through inheritance or a school you're not allowed to join 🤔 and this is privilege! Part of the core issue in my view. We are surrounded by divisions in many complex forms. Psychological and physical segregation isn't really needed when / if we all shared the same understanding of truth. Imagine a world like that? A world of continued culture, self fulfilment, respect, exploration and above all, the very best education for all. We can build robots that clean, drive, unblock sewers etc... all those jobs nobody wants. Leaving a calm society of people on a path of self improvement. All sports open to all. All arts open to be explored. Space exploitation. Im sorry but this isn't sifi anymore. What we have now IS a horror. I prefer sifi anyway... especially when we all have leading roles. 🌍❤🤔🤔

My wife & I both read "Guns, Germs and Steel" and "Collapse", and we learned a ton of important things from this wise intellect. Glad to hear that he has a bunker and has given some thought to the threats to life & limb that his environment contains. Once upon a time, both Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts learned a thing or two about always being prepared. Preparedness is just an intelligent response in anticipation of what is essential to have on hand during a future crisis or emergency. Dumb people and pre-occupied people are the ones who probably could have prepared for emergencies but were either too oblivious or too distracted to take any proactive precautions. My wife & I each have an N95 mask, surgical gloves and even a homemade UVC Sterilizer because we prepared for the probability of a future pandemic years ago. It doesn't really take a degree in epidemiology to know that the conditions for pandemic outbreaks are rampant in many regions of the world, and, sooner or later, modern transportation will bring the contagion right to your front door. How could people be so cavalier with their lives that they won't use their God-given intelligence to make even the most basic emergency preparations? Do they think that manna & N95 masks will simply fall from Heaven when they desperately need them...

Questions... great site... love the discussions. Please notice, these identified, so called crisis and risks, are part of an economy that has always and still is, being privately manipulated. Countries don't just decided to put themselves at risk... its forced upon them (in most cases) its because they're being targetted for minerals, precious metals or fossil fuels that another country needs economically. Divisions of education have been systematically delivered to enable years of economic manipulation, like in Africa, middle east and Venezuela. All these divisions, such as differing education, the building of walls, media control, religion etc etc... these are what cause hatred and economic disaster that we see as nuclear war, viruses, civil unrest etc etc. My question is... we have put our security and trust in people that are supposed to be THE best educated people on the planet... yet we find ourseves here, today, in this nightmare, why? Is it not time to identify the core parts of the economy that breeds distrust, hatred and above all shellfish corruption and wealth consolidation leading to genocide, social risk and war. 30 million Africans have died unnecessarily, over the last 20 years? War, bombs and bullets have been flying since 1945, why? Is this Dunning Kruger or just immoral use of power for a very small percentage of the population. Why does this continue? Its my view that if we ALL worshiped the planet instead of the sky, heaven would be here now on earyh for all to enjoy. At the moment, due to thoughts of ignorance, some cultures feel they are intrinsically better humans than others due to religion and education. This is THE root of the problem. Ignore this and we continue to be at risk... FEAR!! the great controller. Its utterly repugnant. Unity is key, No?

Inequality always existed. It was 'sustainable 50 years ago'? Because people in poor countries didn't know? It was because NOBODY knew how rich the rich actually are and how poor the poor are. It wasn't sustainable then and it isn't now. Moving the extremely poor into the richer countries will just make all the countries poor The poor coming in won't become as 'rich' as those already there. The ones already there will just have less too. The actual rich will stay rich and the rest of us will be spreading the crumbs amongst us.

Your argument that the rich/poor populations are a static fixture that hasn’t changed and won’t ever change is flawed. Historically people have moved to countries for more opportunity and a better life and have achieved this. It is true that there is a choke hold on the many by the super rich, but your assertion that it will never change does not hold up. It has changed. Not fast enough, I agree. An Electromagnetic Pulse (from a hostile power OR from a solar event) would fry a lot of the electrical grid. It seems that a whole society could collapse if 10-20% of the population dies soon after and cannot be resurrected for a long period (for example, electrical power plant transformers take a very long time to deliver under the best of circumstances). I am curious why this doesn't make Mr. Diamond's top 4 list.

Remember, in many of our lives issues, there are really no "One Size Fits All" answers. Our Creator gave us individuality, common sense and 'free will' for a reason; To USE it, in hopes of leading each of us to OUR Highest Good. And COVID-19 is an Opportunity to bring out either the best, or the worst, most selfish parts of us. Also, KNOW that COVID-19 which is also known as SARS-CoV-2; WILL eventually be followed by SARS-CoV-3; so maybe we should be looking at this as a warning, a time to practice, become more self and other responsible, accountable, reliable; a time to prepare for even worse future viral pandemics.

Our creator gave us "free will". Agreed. This is why billions is spent on media and advertisements. Find a child that has free will these days? You are buying them items from adverts. Or they're being moulded into paranoid, fearful kids via all forms of educational division. Free-will only comes through awareness, acceptance and yoga practice. Lots of practice. 🙏❤🌍

Opportunity really only exists where accurate knowledge is present and where critical thinking gets a warm welcome. In the Middle Ages and through much of early modern western history, new ideas tiptoed on thin ice. Today, in certain pockets of a given population, critical thinking gets the cold shoulder. Hard questions meet only with suspicion and so again, opportunity seems only to have a chance in the light of open minds.

Sure, a book has records man's sins, but since the inception of human life, we've gone as far as we want without intervention. So, why should anyone fear a god who thinks a book will change the world for the better? The book didn't save Europe and Britain from religious tension and subsequently war and they had plenty of religious leaders with their own copy of the bible. Therefore, the warnings mean nothing, b/c they've been heard to long without follow up. It's like threatening a small child and never acting upon the threat. No reason to trust. No reason to believe.

We are responsible for our own actions and the impact it has on the world good or bad. Humans are supposed to be intelligent. We know we are causing suffering and damage to animals/environment. There is enough information out there to educate us, but the real question is, do we care enough and are we willing to make those changes.

This pandemic, and many earlier epidemics were caused by animal exploitation. This is one more reason to follow the advice of the expert panel of the UN that concluded that we need to switch to a plant based diet to avoid irreversible climate change. They also found that animal agriculture contributes more to climate change than all transportation combined! Animal agriculture is also a major waste of fresh water, which was mentioned by Mr. Diamond as one of the dangers he was talking about.

10:45 - That doesn't make sense to me. If we survive we won't be asking how late 20th and early 21st century capitalism and supply chain optimization with no stockpiling, or lipservice only to global warming, I don't think we'll be asking how people were so blind and stupid - we'll have an immediate response - we weren't taking game theory and its interactions with the commons seriously enough and for historical reasons too many of us had sacred objects in areas where game theory operated, thus it was a taboo topic and thus we just had to run faster and faster at what we were doing wrong to keep up with whoever was the most ruthless, had the most blatant disregard, and who'd conquer us or put us out of business if we didn't. I like the way Daniel Schmachtenberger put it recently about whaling, that it's a tragedy if certain whale species are ready to go extinct and fishermen/whalers are taking up the last few dozen of that species for oil, fat, meat, and other products but there's an understanding along with that - if a given whaler doesn't get that whale and have a hand in making that species go extinct that whale still won't stay on the ocean, it'll just be someone else's resource prosperity, the more scrupulous whaler's loss, and the species will still go extinct. It's a bit like we need some means to clean up undesirable / harmful arms races over the commons and if we're still alive as a species in 200 years that's something they'll be able to look back on our time and say some people are clued into it but most people found it a controversial concept.

I, for one, am sick of living as someone else's property while being conditioned to think otherwise. I see the dominance hierarchy in this species, and academia plays a large role in it. Edward Bernays, Sigmund Freud's double nephew, bragged about how manipulable the masses are in a book called Propaganda (1928). My main concern is not asteroids or volcanism or diseases or anything else the universe might do. My main concern is the increasingly deceptive practices being implemented by shadowy people in the dominance hierarchy of this species. The news media, an artifact of academia, is making a psychological war against the masses. Is everyone aware that the birth certificate is copyrighted and that the name on it is not yours? The BC I use is claimed to be the intellectual property of Her Majesty in accordance with section 12 of Canada's copyright act. Why would law need to be complicated? Why are the fundamentals of law not taught to the young? Why is Jesus alleged to have said. "Woe unto you, Lawyers!"? Why are people naive enough to think presidents and prime ministers are stupid and that we suffer due to their mistakes? I'm not aware of chimps voting for the one they want to be the alpha male. The masses need to learn about themselves as the apes we are and then shine a light on the hierarchy. I don't see this happening, though. I think the shadowy people will continue to divide the rest of us against each other, successfully. We think of chimps as living a brutal existence, but they know how they are governed. We don't. The dominance hierarchy in our species is camouflaged. What we think of as government is their front. We're supposed to focus on that and keep our eyes off the folks that pretend to have no power, although they have great wealth and produce nothing of value.

Without doubt. Academia a? 🤔 is this not the sharing of good practice? The search for truth... science is supposed to be the search for ultimate truths. So, we look at all the scientists arguing about the virus' danger, herd immunity and whether masks work, ffs! All those years of education only to become a government "rent a professor"!! Such waste. Since the 80s in the UK, we have had Punch and Judy shows in parliament. Seriously!! Its nothing other than a public pantomime. Look at Brexit (sorry , i know😝) we had no oposition. At all!! A political leper called Corbyn, was allowed to rise to power, knowing full well, there wasn't a risk of him taking over as prime minister. This is horrifically like America now!? All children deserve much better than the future they have been presented with now. The elderly, who have paid so much tax, worked to make their world somewhat secure and comfortable and the thanks is what? Now, its an early grave... no long retirements of freedom. I know im jumping topics, but its all tied together in one repugnant economy. We can stop this ride, get off for a while and demamd a new set of drivers. I for one, dont intend to allow this to continue. I can only improve what I have and be sincere with people. I love this planet and everything on it... and i mean every thing, creature, person, animal, trees, even golfers. We cant afford to sit and allow our planet to be used this way. We have a beautiful planet, possibly the only one occupied at the moment. We have a God like duty to keep it all safe, no? Please, everyone, try!! ❤🌍🎇

I did enjoy his book "Collapse" but "Guns, germs, and steel" REALLY has some holes in it. Why was the wheel not invented and widely used in the New Word, ditto iron working, and many other things that have nothing to do with grains, animals, and such being limiting factors. There is a much stronger argument based upon latitude: people in northern climates had a shorter growing season and were forced to be more inventive to survive. This is a far better explanation for the technological differences between the Nahuatl (Aztecs) and Europeans upon contact. The Nahuatl and Maya had very high technology in many fields: astronomy, architecture, agriculture, etc. Diamond's ideas sound more like some sort of PC apologetics piece vs scientific thought. He is right about LA though- it is doomed.

Jared, These foreigners can get as angry and envious they want at our lifestyle and traditions, but rather than migrate they can make their homes where they were born a garden. The technology and knowledge is there for the asking (or thievery as in Communist China). I see no reason for anybody to try to migrate to the U.S.A. when there is so much room going to waste in their original countries. If there is a tyranny in their country, then they eliminate it and choose the style of government that suits them. At great cost, we eliminated tyranny in 1775-1783, 1859-1865 and probably will have to do it again. I find the division inside our present government offensive, and plan to eliminate it before I die. Many will ask: what can one man do? I say: a lot if he picks his words carefully. This is where the past can help me change my words to heal the divisive elements in our Government. This is where a man who wants no fame, no fortune, no victory, can excel. I have always been like this, working behind people and letting someone else claim their time of fame. Whether we have a bloody victory, or a peaceful consolidation is up to the circumstances of the times. I fear it will be a bloody victory, as this Country has been too lazy in their actions to gather peacefully to solve the problems we face today. We have no real outside oppressors to rally against at this time, so the changes have to be made from inside, and that can be a bloodletting we haven't seen since the "war of Northern Agression" as they still call it here. Time will tell.

Jared Diamond regards his opinion and perception of events and facts as important, because they are his. In his books, his historical analyses reveal his deep anti-religious bigotry, and he only accepts a version of things if it mirrors his opinion. But because he is a best selling author, his opinions are well sought. This doesn't mean to say what he has out together is nonsensical - on the contrary. Like all other authors, read then intelligently but beware their biases. What could be a mass extinction event for humans in an instant, can actually be a pandemic. And he is still concerned about nuclear fall out... 🤦🏻‍♂️ Inequality being a fourth disaster: hello, inequality, Dr Socialist, has been around throughout almost all of human history... As for Easter Islanders, that's a best hypothesis, not a fact. Disease and other factors could have contributed to the end of that society, not just the 'cutting down of trees'. It's unfortunate people don't question through his 'thinking'. His application of the probability of 1/1000 is also incorrect. If ten trees crash each night in New Guinea, it won't take 1000 nights of sleeping under one to arrive at the probable event... it also disregards the wide spread of trees in the forest. Just saying. Do not take his word for it. He confuses 'risk analysis' with 'constructive paranoia', no matter how novel his label 🏷 is. 🙏🏼

It is a group of lab generated viruses. The Cabal built the lab in Wuhan. The virus was made in a lab in North Carolina and transferred over to the Wuhan lab then it was set out on the wet market in Wuhan to make it look like that’s where in started. Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx are Cabal. So is Bill Gates. The international coalition you speak of was never investigated for being for being crooked by the Obummer administration or any before it. People that repeat the mistake - In Chinese the word "crisis" is a combination of two charaters danger and opportunity - only shows that they don't really know Chinese. The Chinese word for "crisis" is 危機 wēijī - made up of critical & machine. Danger is 危險 - critical + risk. And Opportunity is 機會 - machine + meeting. So you could say - in Chinese you can take the first characters of danger and opportunity - and combine them to mean crisis. But there are plenty of other words that start with those two characters... It is just a internet mistake - told over and over - to the point you have someone trying to appear smart using this mistake. I wish people would stop saying this - as it is not true. But a critial machine is def a crisis.

Mr Diamond for Nobel Prize! Racism is a plague, as we have seen until recently, and it arises from a condescending look on the other. This is why I am launching a petition to propose Jared Diamond to the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. His books restore their dignity to a number of civilizations, including the last hunter-gatherers still existing, which he frequented for years. One of his books particularly "kills" racism: "Inequality among men". I suggest that you sign this petition on @t @t

Have you, Mr. Diamond, quit riding in motorized vehicles?? Might I ask, how do you protect your bunker and its contents?
