What begins as a level-headed conversation with a theist about consciousness quickly goes south at the end. We’re doing our best to weed out troll callers, but at the same time, this one touches on some important questions of consciousness and the definition of the supernatural before… you know… ruining things.
CW: A moment of graphic content at 17:16 as this troll tries to shock us.

Imagine calling in, waiting on hold, talking to a call screener, waiting on hold, listening to the show through the phone you are holding up, forcing your way through a conversation, lose said conversation, and then when you FINALLY get to the troll part (the entire reason you spent all this time and effort), you are too excited to talk into the phone correctly and enunciate your words well enough to be intelligible. Astounding.

I prefer using the word parsimonious or adding the qualifier "all things being equal" to help convey that point. Also while not really Occam's Razor... some people don't get there's nothing inherently wrong with adding assumptions, if it improves the model's accuracy and predictive power.

@MichaelDeHaven

@@LinkFanatic I'm definitely not an expert on this topic, so please keep that in mind. I would say a "good" assumption generally, but not always, eliminates possibilities. Given that most modern models are expressed in mathematical forms it's actually intuitive that a restriction of the space of possible answers results in a much more accurate, and therefore predictive answer. Of course the assumption could also shift/warp the space and lastly it could lead to a contradiction with another assumption. I actually find the last case interesting as we often advance by letting go of explicit or implicit assumptions. Look at the advances in math when we allowed for noneuclidian geometry.

@franktheexpertstrenchclub9025 Жыл бұрын
That’s not really true though… There is absolutely not parity between the right and the left when it comes to ignorance, small-mindedness, and definitely not anti-intellectualism. The right is exponentially more prone to bigotry, misogyny, anti-LGBTQ sentiment, accepting conspiracy theories, religious fanaticism, and science denial. (They’re also responsible for literally over 99% of deadly political violence and domestic terrorism.) But the whole “liberals and conservatives are both crazy and irrational!” thing is just not the case. Like, there are some stupid things from some on the left, like some leftists buy into anti-vaxx rhetoric because they confuse it with like anti-corporate sentiment. But right-wingers are far more likely to be anti-science and anti-vaxx. Anyway, I know I went on but it’s a pet peeve of mine when there are suggestions that the right and left are both responsible for dangerous and or irrational positions or agendas or whatever, when it’s literally like 98% the right threatening our future in so many ways. The left tends to be far more rational, pro-science, accepting, and supporting positive positions.

Because they are. The religious population is dying out. The youth aren't coming up with the level of religious ferocity that that older generations are. The youth is also onboard with all the things that most theists hate: Gay people, Transgender people, interracial marriage, mental health providers, self-responsibility, leftist ideologies, etc. The internet age has really poked holes in the barrel of religious nonsense and they are leaking like crazy.

That's just a fact. Reason, logic, great secular interlocutors & debaters, and the INTERNET have done a job in the 21st century to show the silliness and stupidity of believing in magic and superstition. I don't even bother calling it religion anymore. Not one theist debater has "won" a debate on any of the internet shows. Hitchens, Dawkins, Penn, Harris, deGrasse Tyson, et al are stars on the internet, not the pastors and priests. And finally, the Trump years really put the spotlight on American religious people as being dangerous and dishonest. Mike Pence, Jerry Falwell Jr., and many of the Jan6 insurrectionists pushed people on the fence towards the side of reason. We need to keep it up & will as many of these hosts and debaters are still young. Good on em.

@@RavenGlenn Uuuummm . . . I agree with most of what you are saying except about the religious population dying out. Religion is still very active and strong and what appears to be dwindling is homogenized into spiritualistic woo and navel gazing knowledge. Granted, it's less harmful than Religion, but '' faith '' is still living within too many people . . . young and old. Also look at the Christian Nationalism, Q anon, Trump's millions of followers, the Right wing majority in government . . . there is still plenty of battles to get into. The Internet is a helpful platform for reason and rationality, but the overabundance of wacky ideas and self-interest schemes drowns out the positive values. But I hope you're right. @@2fast2blockSimple issues you have skirted to try and dumbdown someone's argument....and mine comes from a Phd in Applied Physics. Please define what you mean as natural and what you define as supernatural versus what others define them as.....now show evidence that your definition is absolutely 100% correct.....and dictionary definition does not matter as that only states what a word is defined as today (reason they are revised regularly). With the advent of quatum physics and its 'understanding' over the past 100 years, including the whole multiverse theories, what you stated is not being challenged directly but redefined. A lot more refer to matter than energy, because it is now believed that 2 elements in stasis ie no energy registered can impact each other and generate energy. Obviously this already can be seen with chemical reactions, but this is at the sub atomic levels. The other part of your argument works on the finite theory, which is not excepted by all physicist especially not Quantum physicist or people such as Stephen Hawkins. The premise is that there is only so much energy in existance, therefore if the universe is expanding then the amount of energy has to be stretched further and normally use the effect of atmospherics on a ballon as a very simple example. Though the premise of the argument of energy cannot be created or destroyed may be correct, with our understanding today, it certainly can be altered. Example a sun is known to be highly compressed energy, and if that sun goes supernova then the energy not just changes but all that energy is released but no longer under magnitudal force compression....so even now we have huge amounts of energy under sever compression that once released would spread across the universe. This does not even touch on anti-matter and the theorised energy that is contained or the impact of matter on anti-matter and the reverse and whether this would actual create energy. So on this basis yes your stating of some of the laws of physics from an elementary stand point are correct but as you glossed over some other key points that follow on from them then your argument is not quantified. So you after you used the laws of physics and the nature of energy to dumbdown someone else you now effectively state that energy was created by a supernatural force(and whether you call it god or something else is irrelevant). Please evidence the existance of this being, also as energy is part of nature please explain how it is able to create something in the physical/natural world unless it is formed from something that can exist in the natural world.

In cooking, everything “natural” is grown as a plant or animal. If it’s not a white granular powder, and it is an individual uncooked unprocessed ingredient, it is produced by nature in the form you find it. Granulated powders like sugar and salt, baking soda, powder etc have undergone some processing and or chemistry to achieve the state you purchase it in. Wheat flour should not be white in its natural state even if it is not whole wheat, it should be a yellowy white. Unbleached and bleached wheat flours sometimes have extra vitamins/nutrients added to them to improve the nutritional value of baked goods. Food with the least amount of processing and therefore the most natural state are generally healthier for your body because your body has evolved to break down food as we discover it in nature, nutrients encapsulated in plant fibre which your digestive track must break down, for instance, so when our bodies don’t have to work to get at the nutrients and calories of food, we get too much of the value of food too quickly and as a result we store it as fat and our sugar levels spike. This is why learning to cook your food from scratch is seen as healthier than eating restaurant food or pre prepared foods.

Free will is mutual exclusive to the existence of a god that is omni-knowing. If there is an entity that exists "outside of time" and Knows what you are going to do, then you cannot do anything other than what that Being already Knows you are going to do. The monotheistic god, cannot exist with future Knowledge, if you have the ability to change the future with your actions. The two concepts are fully mutually exclusive to each other.
