Not really. In fact there are a LOT of ppl like him these days. His motivation for 'debunking' the paranormal was that he tried desperately for decades to become famous as a stage magician but was never accepted because of his homosexuality. That in itself is a shame, but he used that bitterness as a tool to attack those who were popular. Yeah he busted fraud 'televangelists' and 'psychics' like Uri Geller, but they were fooling no one but the foolish, and it takes a fool to feel the need to say "Uh uh. Thats not true!". Does anyone go to a David Copperfied or David Blaine show and genuinely believe theyre performing 'magic'? No. Its entertainment and its sad that Randi expended an entire life and talent in a bitter pursuit to attack people because he was rejected. Its no different than someone who watches pro wrestling and feels they have to announce that it's fake. There is no one like Randi anymore bc being gay is much more accepted now than it was then. People are free to be whomever they are so this brand of ignorant bitterness is fortunately obsolete.

This is how you are supposed to give a lecture. You give them ways to remain entertained and to keep their attention on you. You break the ice with things like the jokes and scenarios to give them a more comfortable atmosphere. Then you explain it in a way to educate them but keeping it within light hearted humor and interaction with the audience. This is a blueprint that more people should follow. This is how you know that even after the lecture, though you may have made jokes and laughed, there was still a lesson taught or advice given that they will be able to utilize and remember throughout their lives.

17:44 whenever i reached to top of the stairs in the hallway where i live, someone seemed to be whistling at me. it was never enough of a thing for me to worry about, so i'd forget and then be surprised each time, i'd get to the top of the stairs and before i open the hallway door, i get whistled at. this carried on for weeks, cause i'd never think twice about it, it was just a weird thing that happened. then one day i had been talking to friend about it and remembered to check it out this time, so i get to the door and yep, i get whistled at, but, only when i press my foot in a certain place - it was a squeaky floorboard. these sorts of things happen all the time, and if you want to believe a poltergeist is whistling at you, you probably will, you have to actually wonder if you could be mistaken though to be sure.
@Onoesmahpie Жыл бұрын
This issue of failing to exhaust all possible causes for a phenomena, or failing to correctly identify the phenomena, is exactly the problem that paranormal believers fail to appreciate. Our brains are designed to come to quick, intuitive conclusions, which in many cases are correct but in most cases, especially those of a complex subject matter with tons of possibilities to ponder and subsequent questions to ask, our brains short-change us and bypass the logical reasoning route in lieu of a quicker, more comfortable route of intuition. We couldn't survive in the wild if we spent 15 minutes investigating every `squeaky floorboard` to fully and rigorously satisfy our curiosity. Instead our brain tries to let us have the cake and eat it too: we get to come to a conclusion our brain interprets as correct, and can in some cases function to keep us safe (the whistle was scary, right?) but we don't have to go through the lengthy and mentally demanding process of logical reasoning. The price of course is that the methods used to come to the conclusion are less than sound. Not a problem whenever we are hunting for food in a post apocalyptic wasteland and the ominous whistle that we presumably avoid is actually a squeaky floorboard, but when we advance to the point that careful, rigorous reasoning becomes very important and a lack of it can actually lead us very astray and at worst cause serious harm or death, we are in a bind because our brains are evolutionarily adapted to avoid careful logical reasoning in so many situations.

James Randi is the reason why I got my kids a book about "magic". If they understand how people get fooled, maybe they will not get fooled (at least not that easily). Many years ago I used to frequently see in newspapers and magazines quotes from this guy "shooting down" claims of paranormal/supernatural events. I imagined that, apart from his spectacularly successful magician career, he was bored and so lived for the thrill of trying to cruelly squash more ordinary sorts of people's happiness and hopes for the idea of magical tales coming real or a spirit world or an afterlife. I decided he was mainly just a killjoy and so ignored his appearances on TV. Now i understand and greatly appreciate his real purpose of wanting to find out the truth behind sensational accounts, gossip, rumors, folklore, superstitions, and religious myths, that so many people automatically believe just because they are in print, and his sense of humor. I love his hilarious analysis of Santa and the flying reindeer. He's much missed and so hard to replace. We need many more people like him in the world. This was early 1990’s and there was still much woo-woo in science. Like, government was still paying scientists to explore ESP for military use. And scientists were either deluding themselves into it, or not being up front with the truth, for an easy payday. Taxpayers paid for a lot of nonsense from the 1960’s through the… well, now. Pretty sure that’s what he was referring to, scientists being influenced with a financial or other influencing incentive to find enough evidence to justify more research (I.e. job security). And he couldn’t talk about it because it was told to him in confidentiality and some of the “research” was still classified.

How does the ESP Card Trick work? I've watched him doing the same trick during three decades and it baffles me every time. Even more so, as he keeps telling "me", that the trick is oh so easy
@MrMqwe1 Жыл бұрын
I have a guess. When he gives the “stranger” the cards notice he says shuffle them face down. And he says slap the two of them together so that you don’t see what they are. This is to suggest that the person he gave them to couldn’t be in on the trick. Because they saw him shuffle them and then select two cards at random. He then says put them in the envelope and drop the other 3 on the floor face down. I think the “stranger” at that point switches the cards to three known cards that he drops. When Randi goes back to the desk notice he drops the envelope. Why would he do that? Only to switch it. In the one example I saw I would say the sound when the envelope hits the desk suggests that it dropped further than the inch or so if it had landed on the top of the desk. He misdirects everyone with some math. Then picks up the substitute envelope which has the known two cards in it and then opens the envelope.

I never had an "out of body" experience, but I did have a "vision". I was sleeping in a car on a camping trip, and knocked the old car's stick shift out of park, and the space was sloped and the car would have rolled into my friend's tent foolishly right behind the car, and then possibly into a mountain stream behind that. But a "picture", birds eye came into my mind of the predicament, and I went from sleeping into an understanding I had to get my leg over to the driver side brake, and was able to stop the car inches from the tent. Did I know the tent was behind the car to add to my picture? Did I invent it afterwards? I can't say. You can say I have a very vigilant unconscious that created the picture to tell me what I needed to do, and really I'd as well take the explanation of a guardian angel, who put the picture and directive into my mind. And how would you ever prove or disprove? Yes, I'm just very smart when I'm sleeping, sure, makes sense. And if I'm not just very smart, what are the implications? Can I expect my angel to always warn me of danger? And why do bad things happen anywhere if angels can save us? Why save me or my friend from a violent death? And I have no answers. Who is to tell angels what they can or can't help us with? And I'd never purposely be negligent because I think angels will always save me, so not an experiment I'll try to repeat. So if anything avoiding disaster just tells me to be more careful in the future. What doesn't kill you makes you more careful next time???

It would be more convincing if you or your 'close friend' would have made these claims during Randis lifetime. Very convenient. Well, if his claims are true and he has proof, why didn't your 'friend in another city' come out and go to the police?
@raypierce5818 Жыл бұрын
@@Andrzhel_vis_Vhaeraun He did, to myself and many others in the industry. It is a well-known fact to everyone that is actually in the know. It’s obvious that you were not as informed as most of the others that actually knew him. Try researching the James Randi audio tapes.

Always wondered why he 'came out' so late in life.

Your metaphysical experiences are easier to believe when witnessed by others. Thankfully.

The fact that other people can be equally as gullible as you does not make metaphysical experiences any more legitimate.
