Great info. I like to draw with waterproof ink and go over with watercolors. If someone is looking for a cheaper waterproof fountain pen combo I’d recommend a Platinum Preppy for around 5 bucks and the great thing w platinum fountain pens is that you use platinum Carbon black cartridges if you don’t want to mess with ink bottles and cartridge converters. Also the platinum pens have “slip and seal” caps which basically never dry out.

I would have said the exact same thing, preppies + pcb are the best! ❤ If you buy a Preppy, the ink cartridge it comes with is NOT waterproof, but you can buy packs of the Platinum Carbon Black ink cartridges separately.

I've used most of those (or their equivalent) and still do. If someone is really into sketching in ink, I'd still definitely have a fountain pen in the end as well. I love the flow of a fountain pen, even though I more often use fine liners at the moment. People can do great work with the common biro and paper. All the best, John

I haven't had a belly laugh over a video in ages! You are a kindred spirit in the love of pens and collecting more than may ever be used. I'm particularly weak as Septembers approach...I've been out of college for decades, but have and irresistible drive to buy pens, journals and sketchbooks as Fall approaches.....so glad to know I'm not alone in this obsession! 😅

I also feel much better about my collection after seeing these images of your stockpile. Embrace your obsession! I would only add to this list the kakimori dip pen….you get thin or thick lines by angling the tip, and the line lasts a surprising long time. Better than glass, imho. A true innovation.

I love the Uniball Vision pens shown at the beginning! I've been using those for a little bit now and they are great! Of course, since I'm left handed they take more care since I'm prone to smudging my work with these, but I just let it be an exercise in delayed gratification. My favorite inexpensive pens (not that the Visions are expensive) are the Bic Round Stic pens and the Cristal pens. The Round Stic I've found to be better in that they allow for light or darker shading depending on the pressure, and the Cristal are more bold and the flow is darker so it's harder to make light marks with. I also recommend the Zebra Z- Grip which are like the Bic Cristal pens. I'm kind of a pen addict at this point and I have so many I can't count them 😂😅

I am currently drawing with a Bic Fine Stic with a cushy grip on it. Was what I had in the house (my writing instrument of choice for years) at the time. I bought some fine liners and a brush pen but since I just began drawing again after 20 years, I thought I would gradually experiment with other types of pens. I enjoyed the "tour" of different pens.

I am using a Twisbi 580 with Noodlers waterproof ink. I water color and brush pen over it with no issues … ink and wash. I love it for both drawing and writing. By end of today I should have a Lamy Safari EF (Twisbi is F). I bought a kit with converter so I can use Noodlers or the Platinum. I don’t find the process fussy. I also love Sharpies for some things. I do use watercolor paper even in my journal. Ultimately as you summed up … we each like different things and what/how we do might change. Cheers from a pen lover with a much smaller collection … so far😂 ***Edited to say ... Lamy Safari received and I am so far not a fan ... to light to the hand compared to Twisbi. But that is me :)

I have really enjoyed this series of videos and have found them very helpful. Thank you for your generosity. I have a small collection of pens that I like: 1 Lamy fountain pen, fine nib (and plan on getting a 2nd one with a medium nib); a set of 6 Staedtler pigment liners; a set of 6 Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens (4 gray, 1 black, 1 indigo); and a set of 4 Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens, all Dark Sepia. I feel like I get more for my money if I buy sets. Plus I get to try the different sizes.

After trying many different pens, my favorite is the UniBall Eye Micro. It flows the best onto paper, and the ink is permanent. I also love brush pens. I put ink in a water brush for some really fast and expressive drawing. Personally, I dislike the feel of fineliners. I rarely use them anymore.

Currently my favourite pens to draw with are Uni Pin fine liners (0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 are in my art bag). One day, I’d like to be more confident with a brush pen but for now I can’t stand using a brush pen. I’ve never thought of myself as a control freak, but I guess I must be, with pens at least, because I can’t cope with my lack of control with a brush pen. I should probably practice with it more, but I just don’t enjoy it at all!

You've sold me on the Pentel brush pens! I'm drawing with a large collection of fountain pens with a full assortment of colours, dye inks in some, pigment inks in others, all with fude/bent nibs because I love the variety of line width available with these nibs. I paint with the dye inks and a waterbrush, often dripping the ink from the pen onto the paper. Enormous fun!

Some of my favorite pens are oil-based ballpoints in larger point size like Bic Cristal 1.6mm because the motion they make on the paper tends to stay very controlled and dampened by the oil without feeling scratchy. Bic also makes Gel-ocity which preserves a lot of the same feel as their ballpoints but with a bolder gel line. I also like dye-based markers with plastic tips like Papermate Flair Ultra-fine or the Office Depot "Stylemark" store brand. For lines with more character one of my go-tos is Uni-Pin Brush pen. It's part of a fineliner set like the Microns, but Uni-Pin's take on the brush tip is a little bit softer than the Tombow Fudenosuke, and I find it pretty versatile. For someone just starting out I do recommend skipping over to the dip pens because you get a lot of customization options for the price, and a lot of them you can't find anything equivalent to by getting a marker. Nibs tend to slow you down and make you think before moving since you have to manage the ink level, and the fine nibs snag easily, which is useful for developing technique. Speedball sells them in starter sets that help you survey a lot of types of line. Just make sure the ink is kept on a tray so spills don't turn into disasters.

Excellent pen overview! Goes well as a sidecar to the how to draw series! One note: the link to the Uniball pen is for the Uniball “Elite,” and unless it’s changed since I last bought a box, the Elite ink is not waterproof. The regular Uniball Vision that you demonstrated in the vid *is* waterproof. Both great pens, IMHO. I keep one of each and a water brush with a small sketchbook in my bag all the time for impromptu sketching. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

My favorite is the MICRON... However.. they last perhaps a half hour at most. At $3.59 apiece... no bargain. Also, if you put too much pressure on them, the plastic snout will crack. I draw for hours at a time so finally getting fed up with them and looking for a substitute. I'll try the Edding next. Thanks for the informative video.

To relearn drawing, I am starting with relearning cursive writing. The hand and arm movements are used in drawing. My favorite pens at the moment are fountain pens, and they are the cheapest out there- Jinhao (ultra-fine, extra-fine and a fine) pen set and a extra fine Kakuno. I can change the inks easily and do various exercises to retrain my hand and eyes after years of printing. My drawing had become like my printing and I need to loosen up, so to speak. Sometimes, the cheapest pens are the best. I do have a nice Pilot and an old Waterman fountain pen that are very nice, but I prefer my "cheapies" at the moment for the fine lines they make.

I have a lot of fancy pens because I think they’re cool. Most of the time, though, I draw with just a really cheap ballpoint pen. You can be sketchy with them and you can also draw on top of paint without ruining an expensive micron pen.

Pentel pocket brush pen was recommended in a video for learning better pressure control. I don't know if it was from your channel or not. But I got one and it's my favorite pen. I also like Sharpie felt tip pens and round stic (bic? papermate?) . Of course staedtler and fabercastell pens. I've never had any luck with the microns, for some reason they're always dry. I have not tried this pen, but it is in "saved for later" cart ... Pilot Parallel "fountain" pen. It is marketed as a Calligraphy pen, but I watched a landscape artist do some Urban sketching with it and then demo the various stroke widths it will do. It is definitely not a "pretty" pen but it looks to have some interesting drawing capability for less then $15 USD. It comes with cartridges but the Pilot 40 Con converter will work with it.

My search for the perfect pen is driven more by dismal handwriting vs writing a lot. A LOT. I found a fountain pen gives me my best handwriting, the entire physics of it, drag force, fluid flow, viscosity.... Just perfect control. And dare I say the psychology of tradition & luxe, makes me feel like Rothschild signing a deal, or Hemingway maybe (or was he a typewriter fiend?). BUT fountain pens are such high maintenance, as the meme goes
