On taking breaks, I’d like to throw in that scrolling social media doesn’t count as a break! Social media can still consume a lot of your brain power and can even be stressful, social media is designed to be distracting and attention holding and even use more energy than participating in your hobby.

Same thing with some games, they can be stressful and consume your brain power, of course it’s still good to have a change of scenery if you want to do those things during your rest time

YES I am currently taking an 8 hour emt class and they give us a handful of breaks throughout the day. I used to scroll my phone during them but it didn't make me feel refreshed, now I go outside take a short walk and come back(it's a 5 minute break usually). I see a lot of other people go on their phones during the breaks but especially as someone with adhd who needs the movement and needs the breaks more, scrolling my phone wasn't cutting it, I've noticed a huge change in my ability to focus from taking a walk and looking for new plants and bugs during our breaks instead of going on my phone.

Drawing every day for me has been a form of self care for me. Not only am I learning something new each day and keeping my mind sharp, but it's a nice escape and a way to meditate after a long day. I am a full time caregiver for my husband who has a chronic illness so I can get stressed out physically and emotionally. Art is keeping me going in so many ways and I'm so grateful for it 😊❤

you were the one who inspired me to draw more this year. i haven't been able to draw every day because of university, but i have been drawing more this year than i have all my life! which to me feels more meaningful than getting one sketch in every day for the hell of it (what i ended up doing earlier this year after a few months). i feel like i'm at a place where i can say i love my art, while there's room for improvement and always will have, i do enjoy looking at them. it's kinda that thing people say "my younger self would freak out if they saw my art now"! anyway, that's all to say, thank you so much Shay. you're my favorite artist, i never get tired of rewatching your videos and scrolling through your Instagram page. hope the rest of this year brings you tons of more opportunities and happiness

I´m honestly grateful for your videos, as an art teacher student college has got me down how other teachers often criticize what you or what their students draw or in what style you do it, plus the fact that in the third year, we leave art aside to more pedagogical themes, personally that affected me, I was quite unsure for some time if I really loved art because of that, but now that I don´t draw or paint as much as I would love I realized how much I love to do it. Watching your videos has been a help to the way I see art, and I still want to learn many things for my future students and me, so thank you. I tried this for a while and I actually just got burnt out and stressed trying to stay productive with art everyday. It’s good practice for a few months but it’s not really a sustainable work ethic and I also find you kind of plateau at improvement after a while. It was hugely refreshing to stop caring about when I got art done after this period and now I purposely take days off from my art. I find it’s way better to binge draw for a few days then stop and play video games, watch movies/TV, read, get your mind off drawing and come back refreshed. It’s good for productivity to take periodic breaks and I think rest days are good for your brain. Just speaking from my own experience. Any artists who get insecure or anxious about your progress or not being productive enough, don’t be like me and feel bad because you DON’T draw everyday. Imo it’s not all it’s cracked up to be and comes with its own pitfalls. Draw when you want/can, have fun, don’t overthink it. Last thing you want to do is make your passion a chore. 🙏

Shay how are you avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome? You are drawing so much and seem to be fine, recently i was on that perfect "drawing every day and being happy" momentum but now my wrist hurts and im really sad because it needs a lot of time to heal :(
@sketchesofshay5 ай бұрын
lots and LOTS of stretching, good posture, and taking breaks every 20 minutes! I would recommend looking up artist stretches, desk stretches, carpal tunnel stretches, and ulnar nerve stretches to stay on top of arm and wrist health. Do them preventively (don't wait for pain to arise), and do a couple selected stretches that feel good everyday. This is also something you need to work up to as well to develop those healthy habits and train your hand. The most I draw is day is 3-4 hours (which isn't everyday), and I found that if I push this, that's when I find a lot of discomfort. I would also make sure you're not gripping your pencil/stylus and pressing down too hard. I have this bad habit, and breaking up my drawing sessions in 20 min increments as well as altering the pen pressure settings loosens up my grip and reduces strain. Posture and stretching is everything. Pacing myself is key, but I am also trying to train my left hand just as well so I can switch and still draw. Set timers to remind yourself to recalibrate and find a healthy drawing posture. Wishing you a gentle recovery! Take it slow my friend

this piece 12:15 genuinely made me beam love how you emphasize the importance of just allowing yourself to be bored. boredom=/misery, it's vital. being constantly stimulated or entertained is only a modern phenomenon that I think people should try and avoid, especially because it hinders the emergence of new, 'original' thoughts since you're constantly consuming information from everyone/everything else you were, in fact incredibly un-subtle about the huge project, and god I AM SUPER EXCITED (if I'm guessing correctly, how embarrassing would it be if I was completely off the mark) hearing about the metaAI situation is enraging. i can only really hope for strong protections for artists and all other creators in the future, regarding machine learning and whatnot. it's a bit baffling that these companies are just allowed to scrape whatever they want to train their thieving ML programs. 23:57 this piece is doing something to my brain. it's so lively, it practically feels as if it's animated, I can't stress this enough cheers to a great summer, all these updates have me so excited. also wanted to point out how clean the editing has gotten this past year. the one in particular, is so smooth. --we're laptop twins! I upgraded from a 2016 MacBook to the M3 in November of last year and it's awesome!

Ooh I really like the idea of setting up pages to track your progress! I don't usually see all my work together or note the hours of practice so it's easy for me to feel like I haven't done much since the start of the year. Would love to hear more about how you go about organizing your pages for that! Also, you're so right about the importance of momentum. I feel like it's a struggle to pick up where I left off it if I don't try to integrate art into my schedule - even if that isn't everyday. :')

I definitely built this habit up overtime, and I fluctuate between just spending an hour to 4 hours daily. I really love creating, and I have a very obsessive personality lol, so I never really run out of ideas or motivation. I do get discouraged from time to time, but I always find I feel better after creating than not creating at all. It keeps me sane. Hello! Sorry, i don’t usually do that, but today i really felt like asking an artist i look ip to an advice. It might be because I feel really comfortable asking that you. So i have an art problem. It bothers me so-so much, i cant even find the right words to describe it! So i tend to be an artist. And lately i caught an artblock or maybe a burn out. Cant really tell… im so frustrated with my art, i cant even pick up a pencil! I was drawing commissions for a while now. Even when im not, im drawing something for others. And when i lately tried to draw for myself I couldn’t. And from that moment it felt awful to do anything. I dislike my style, the way i draw poses, the content i draw, message i put in my art, there is nothing i dont hate about what i create. It’s awful. Im really lost. I asked everyone, and everyone told me different things. I just can’t figure it out on my own. Its the hardest frustration I’ve ever felt about my art. I draw more then 5 years for sure, and its the first time i feel really helpless. If there’s anyone reading this comment might have some advice, please let me know. (Sorry for my English and sorry for the small vent thing. I just don’t know what to do honestly) either way thank you for reading this! Please be nice 👉🏽👈🏽 And as always its a wonderful video, I rewatch your videos a lot. Thank you so much for continuing making content!

but how do i set goals that are at least substantial? Whats your creative process, like from when you get the creative spark to draw something new to actually sketching? Im always so inspired by you because it always seems like you can draw just about anything!! Theres so many different ways i want to be creative but whenever i start i get frustrated with how little progress ive made! Like you i too am a perfectionist and it debiltates me from even creating for long periods of time because i fall into that comparison loop. AAAA Im applying to art school soon and im struggling with my portfolio because i can never seem to make anything i think looks professional or something im at least proud of (´TωT`)
