Very well done video. I was glad to hear you say to adjust the packing. I've been to several mechanical seal seminars over my 32 years of industrial maintenance career. They always corrected anybody that said TIGHTEN the packing. ;)

Ron, that’s the best presentation of this topic I’ve ever seen. You hit all the important points. Bravo! I would only add, never use graphite containing packing to a yellow metal shaft as severe anodic corrosion to the shaft could happen. Use straight Teflon in this case.
@rontanis10245 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, I recommend the Graphite types only over stainless prop shafts, and the std. teflon for rudder posts which can be either brass or stainelss

Great video. The 45 degree cut at first made sense to me, but wouldn't the better practice be to keep the mating areas of the seal cross sectional "faces" to a minimum? That would be the path for water intrusion, and maintains the smallest area for that to occur would mean a nearly perpendicular cut, no? I understand how impossible that is, and an angled cut is basically necessary here, but a minimum angle would be the best. Unless I'm missing something, and I'm sure that I am... Again, great info, sir. Thank you

Very well done. When you cut the packing material at a 45 degree angle, do you mean 45 degrees from the top of the strand to the bottom of the strand - or from one side to the other side?

Just started watching your videos they are so reassuring. I am a very mechanical person however I’ve never been involved in the kind of boat that I am involved with now. 1979, 288 cruiser inc. villa vee twin 305 Chevy, merCruiser 228 , straight inboards with Borge Warner velvet drive transmission. You have answered all my questions in the many videos I have watched. Thank you for what you do. How do we contact you for parts or information if needed? Thank you again. Long Island New York.

Great video, excellent step by step. How easy should the shaft be to turn when not in water? I have to use 2 hands to turn right now.

With a little soapy water sprayed on the shaft it should be easy to turn with one hand, shaft our of alignment will not turn easy

Ron. I don't believe the dripless Xtra line is for cooling. It is to burp the dripless of air. A buble can form, and not allow outside water to cool the seal.

Wonder if you could put a plastic stuffing box on a sailboat since the stuffing box is usually a massive PITA to access and corroded from the salt water, making it an even bigger headache.

Hey Ron, thank you for the video and knowledge to help assist me for the pack glands. I will check your website and will be purchasing the gland on your site soon . I also need to replace my 55 amp Mando Alternator to a much higher output. I run a large steroe system and 3 batteries. 2 that are parallel on one side and another 1 for my starter on the other side. All Optima group 31 Blue tops (which I need to replace cause they suck and since they are now made in Mexico they dont last). I was thinking of trying the Banshee group 31 deep cycles. But I will wait for your response about the alternator first. My name is Jeff and God Bless.

Hi, everything i have read says to use flax shaft packing! You mentioned something else. Is flax the standard?
@rontanis10243 жыл бұрын
Flax was used up to about 1990's when teflon became the new standard, and in the mid 2005-2010 the combination of teflon & graphite became the current standard (GFO/GFU) the new GFO/GFU take heat much better & drips less. We still use teflon for rudder boxes that use packing.

Im assuming inside the shaft log is the cutless bearing and seal?
@rontanis10244 жыл бұрын
On a typical inboard the cutlass bearing is inside the strut just ahead of the prop, the shaft seal aka packing gland is attached to the shaft log inside the boat via a short hose.

what size packing material?
@rontanis10245 жыл бұрын
All the ski boats I have ever serviced used 1/4", even the older Correct Crafts with the 3/16" packing I will use the 1/4" and flatten it making it wider and seems to work even better that the std 3/16 material.
