One of the more interesting touches lots of people miss about this version(likely because they're not yet familiar with the language) is her using Okinawan words instead of the standard words heard in the original-i.e. kaze[standard word for wind] being switched out with kaji[Okinawan word for wind]. It and the other touches in this one really give it a more island-like flavor to the whole song. Lovely stuff this is

The writer of the song wanted to dedicate it to the victims and survivors of the war where 1/3 of the population of the city died while moving from cave to cave to hide. The lyrics mention: a storm arriving, being separated for 1000 years, commanding the island song to ride the wind with the birds to cross the sea to delivery their tears and their love, pleading to the sea, the universe, to God, to life for an eternal calm to remain

This is a beautiful song and a masterful performance. This version in particular gives me goosebumps. I think that people who listen should know that it is a song between two lovers who are separated by war and death. While it is natural and good that people disagree, let us hope that one day we can all live without war.
@lurkmerchant3 жыл бұрын
In the first verse is about a couple, the second verse is about friends whose casual 'see you tomorrow' turning into the eternal farewell. Okinawa lost nearly half the population during the battle of Okinawa. The world should be fighting together eg. against covid or global warming, etc., not fighting amongst and blaming each other. Pray this world become a beautiful, peaceful place...

Interesting wonderful rendition, musically and visually. A song of home, of love, and of life. A song that bridges the gap between the living and the dear departed. My home is a paradise, a personal and familial heaven. My home is also a massive war grave. My home is Okinawa.

I don't know about any particular dedication or inspiration, public or private that has anything to do with the Okinawan disposition in the war but the song is about two lovers separated and the singer wishing to communicate continued love and affection through eternity through the memory of time spent together in the grove of deigo flowers near the ocean.

@DocTakeshi My grandfather fought against American in Okinawa. My grandfather is Taiwanese, but he defended Okinawa with his life just as your grandfather loved Okinawa.
This is the best take. Okinawan indigenous tune sounds a bit like Celtic tune somehow.

Hmm do you know what the song was written for? It's for the Himeyuri Students who were killed by the Japanese Imperial Army in forced suicides for Hirohito and meat shields for the Army. Miyazawa Kazuhumi wanted to express the pain and anger at not knowing about such things for so long until an ancient survivor recounted her tale of the incident, a culmination of the long prejudice against the Ryukyu Kingdom islanders who were only relatively recently added to Japan.
