River Breaks through Sand Berm - Before, During and After

This video is a follow up to many of the concerns about the previous river video we posted. We had many complaints from people that were not familiar with the water cycle of this stream. What people do not understand is that this river dams up and fills with salt water during large tide fluctuations. It is a common occurrence for the river to break out in to the ocean whether people dig it out or not.
This is also the first video I have ever edited for Skid Kids. I hope this edit gives people a better understanding of the creek and how often it breaks in to the ocean during the winter. There are future restoration plans for this creek which will hopefully improve the water quality of the stream. It is very concerning that certain species of fish that once lived in this stream do not exist in it anymore. In fact there are little to no fish left in this stream at all, and at one point in time Salmon used to spawn here. Unfortunately this is a trend for many watersheds in California and other heavily developed areas. The water in this creek, whether it is polluted or not, will make its way to the ocean. In my opinion, the only way to fix the issue is to begin restoration in several locations up stream.
A majority of footage comes from my friends channel ‪@thisismov‬
check it out for some incredible skimboarding content.
Thanks for watching!

It’s like a kayaker’s kryptonite/worst nighmare cuz theyll just tip over snd keep doing that until they get out (not common) or die :/ (very likely)

@@sidddevtara2990 Pretty sure it's a grey area when it comes to rivers like this that quite frequently get cut off to the ocean by sand bars. The river will breach it's self eventually anyway and it doesn't take very long before the sand bar is restored by the tide. I think the reason it's a grey area is that it's a small lagoon and it's not drastically changing the path of the river. Governments and councils will even breach these to manage river levels and flood risks.

This was an annual event in the small community I grew up in on the shore of Lake Michigan. Our community was at the mouth of a minor river that emptied into the big lake. Every winter, the storms would close off the mouth of the river with ice and sand. Every spring, after the ice had thawed, we would dig a channel to reopen the river in the very same way as they did here. But once opened, the mouth of our small river remained opened until winter returned.

This really interests me- look at all the many rivers in Northumbria (UK) heading East and suddenly turning South when they hit the North Sea, blocked and diverted by massive bars on a really massive scale after the end of the last ice age. Major geological stuff happened. Here a guy starts it off with a cane, then a foot. And then people turn up with surf boards. Way to go dude!

Most of the rivers along California's coast are seasonally closed by sand bars or dunes. We don't have year round precipitation to create strong year long flow and so the mouths naturally dam up. A lot of the fish that live in these rivers are used to this and for fish that are born in rivers and spend their adulthood in the sea, these lagoons that form are waiting rooms of a sort for them. The only rivers that don't have seasonally impounded mouths are really the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers which open into deltas, and the urban rivers with mouths prevented from damming up with sand like the Los Angeles and San Diego rivers.

Mark Twain described how people used to do that to the Mississippi River. If you owned a riverboat landing you were in fat city. If you lived inland from a meander bend you could cut a small ditch across the "neck" when nobody was looking and within hours your neighbor's landing was stranded miles from the channel and YOU owned a riverboat landing. Getting caught digging a ditch would end with you dangling by your neck. Literally. It was a capital offense in the court of public opinion.

Two things 1) how surfers have the ability of make everything look easy 2) gravity seems to not exist in this place

The force from the upward motion of the water in the standing wave counteracts the force of gravity.

Watching your videos makes me miss living by the beach. I went to UCSB for environmental studies but never got into surfing. I miss skating by the beach though. Now I build water treatment systems that discharge to storm drains or creeks that would eventually drain into rives like this one or straight into the SF Bay.

I feel like this would be a nice spot to learn how to surf in. Ever since I saw people river surfing in Munich while I was on a trip there, I've wanted to learn surfing. Sadly where I live in the mid-west there isn't a place around here that does tht.

This is amazing. The whole time I’m watching and wondering how you can get away with destroying the sand berm like that and you’re not being arrested. I had no idea an less than 24 hrs it would repair itself. I just thought the River will be empty, now what? 😳 It would be nice, somehow, to show something on the front end about the “After”. I almost didn’t see “the next day”, and wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t. PS: Can you give me, like an hour video, similar to the 2 minutes from 10:50 to the 12:50 mark? With the same music, too. Just beautiful, and peaceful.

It's a seasonal phenomenon. At low river water levels the mouth gets clogged, at some point, enhanced by rainfall the dam breaks.
