Rumor has it that the sign outside of Skidmore reads, "Welcome to Skidmore, the home of the largest pool table on earth." I think EVERYONE was under the pool table, so it had to be a mammoth sized thing. Ken Rex was not murdered. He was stopped by SOMEONE after the law refused for years to stop him, and to that someone I would only say, "Good job!" You know you are a bad dude when a dozen or more people see someone put an end to you and NO ONE is willing to say a word. When this happened, I think maybe the state police and even the FBI went to Skidmore because they were going to show those small-town Barney Fifes how a REAL lawman conducts an interrogation. To their chagrin, they got nowhere! For years Ken Rex had threated to take the life of anyone whose testimony sent him to prison, and he was not prosecuted because everyone was afraid to testify against him. The town had FINALLY got some people who were brave enough to testify against him and as a result he was found guilty and was supposed to be going off to prison for a decade or so, but his lawyer filed an appeal and even got him freed while the appeal worked its way through the courts. He was found guilty of attempted murder and to the stunned disbelief of the townspeople who had been present at the trial, he made it back to town before they did. The townspeople felt they had no other option. They TRIED to do things the legal way but thanks to Ken Rex's shyster lawyer he ALWAYS got away with whatever he did. Of course, his lawyer is upset at what happened to Ken Rex. KR was probably 90 percent of his business and Ken Rex never had any trouble paying the lawyer because if he was running a little short, he would just go steal something else and sell it for whatever he could get for it. Allegedly, once he even had the audacity to steal a man's hogs one night and then show up bright and early the next morning and offer to sell the man HIS OWN HOGS back! Back when this happened my husband said of Ken Rex, "He was extremely dangerous because he was evil enough to think of the most heinous things to do and he was stupid enough to go ahead and do them." I think that pretty much sums up Ken Rex.

I can vividly remember when this murder happened. I was 12 years old when I saw it on the nightly news in 1981...back when we only had three major networks in the U.S. for news. I've always been fascinated with the fact that Skidmore folks have kept quiet all these years. For there to be up to 60 witnesses of a murder at 11 a.m. on a Friday morning, and nobody claim to have seen anything, shows how desperate these people were for justice they had sought for so long. I got a nice laugh on the 20th anniversary when former marshal David Dunbar was asked in an interview for his thoughts about the murder. He said, "It’s really a shame about the Silverado. That was a really nice truck." Ha!

That lawyer was a big part of the problem too. Someone in town should have invited him to the D&G Tavern for drinks and a chat.

@@AlexBabcock-hw9iz The judges are the ones who were preventing a violent felony case from being properly tried. Today Ken McElroy would have had an ankle monitoring bracelet and if he violated the terms of his bail, he would have been incarcerated until trial. Also once he was convicted he would have been in prison as his appeals were being reviewed.

FULLY AGREE. That lawyer was the classic defense lawyer. Garbage.

No, my friend, there are not murders walking the streets of Skidmore, there are executioners who still live and protect their families from harm. When the law cannot protect the people, it is the right, no, the duty of the men of the town to take it into their own hands and do what the law cannot. This from a 24 year veteran of police work.

I agree, except that in this case I think the law "would not" more than "could not" protect this man's victims.

They were law-abiding people. They gave the law every possible chance to do the right thing, but the law was designed to protect psychopaths because it is designed to protect power, and bullies/psychopaths tend to grab power. Once they realized the law was against them, they did what they had to do. The law left them no choice, if they wanted to survive.

This story is a small example that maybe our elite government officials should learn from. Eventually people get pushed too far and have to take matters into their own hands. The outcome is usually bloody.

I really don't think anyone is afraid. They know who did it, but will never tell not from fear, but because they did what they had to do. There is a lot left out of your story. And that's ok, but if you read the book you'll see how bad it was. This guy would stalk the whole town. Great videos !
