Hi, I am a service technician at a deutz dealer, I would highly recommend you complete the recommended timing check after touching any of the timing belt components.

He is saying to pit the pins back in to make sure everlines back up correctly.

It was all sounding easy till you threw in that torque to 22lbs then torque again to 210°????? What was that? Also if belt tension was at the 3.5 mark when set how did it jump to 6.5-9.5???

Well where does one get the tension tool? Also when the timing is off the valve hits the piston and you bend a push rod but what happens to the valve and the piston? Is this process the same on the 2011 engine?

I have my cam bolt turn just a little over 90° and that’s under a lot of torque maybe 200 foot pounds. I feel like I can’t go anymore to reach 210°. What should I do?

I do not understand why the locking bolt needs to be loosened on the cam pulley . Surely once the crank & cam are timed then that is all that is needed to fit the toothed belt

If you change one of these belts out you'll see why. The new belt and the original one won't be identical. If you had the crank and cam locked in position and took the original belt off and put a replacement one on, you'd need to move the crank or cam slightly to get the toothed belt on. By loosening the bolt in the pulley, you're moving the pulley all by itself to put the new belt on...you aren't moving the crank or cam. That way the engine timing is exactly where it should be, rather than just being "close enough".

The timing on a German diesel is critical. Change the cam timing 2 degrees on a Mercedes diesel and you lose a lot of power. If you don't loosen the cam bolt, it'll still run, but you may or may not get the rated power from the motor. It's a pain in the neck, but why not do it right while you're in there? Adjust the valves , too.

It is call the torque turn method. It is supposed to be more accurate then, say torquing it to 250 ft lbs. When you torque to a low number and the engineer determined that 280 degrees of an additional turn, will bring it more accurately to the example figure of 250 ft lbs.

TTY - Torque To Yield. You are in fact stretching the bolt permanently (plastic deformation), as opposed to a typical bolt returning to its original length after being tightened and then loosened. Many of these types of bolts can only be used once, or possibly a few times because each time you use it you actually permanently stretch the bolt and eventually run out of material to stretch eventually resulting in bolt failure. The bolt will yield and stretch at a given force; this force is the clamping force. This stretching is determined by getting to a predetermined torque and then going past that entering the bolts yielding phase. The sweet spot is likely well before 210 degrees - they just add a bit to ensure you're in the yielding regime. This of course means you must use the correct bolts where the yielding force is known.
