One of our favorite camping spots, Skihist Provincial Park in BC, has re-opened after the 2021 devastating fire in the Lytton area, and it's in great shape. All campsites are FCFS (First Come First Serve) at this campground. We spend a peaceful and relaxing few days there. We also review the campground, and share a couple of our new camping accessories (canopy shelter and table cloth).

We just stopped there for lunch yesterday. Beautiful spot. We drove from Whistler to Kelowna taking the Duffy Lake Road. Warning: the #8 between Lillooet and Lytton was very slow, due to a very rough road. The floods really took a toll on them. You can see where the roads used to be, and how the river has completely changed its route. Scary to how powerful water can be. All in all, I t was a beautiful drive, just very bumpy. We saw bear, deer, mountain goats and even a marmot. Our silver Zion handled the adventure fine.

Appreciate the update, but did you mean road between Spencer’s Bridge and Merritt (#8 we believe) or #12 between Lytton and Lillooet? Suspect the former. We actually took a circle route home via Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Lillooet and then Whistler…more just to enjoy the drive…was debating on #8 at the time. We found the Lillooet side of the Duffy to be quite bumpy now too, but ok and it was a beautiful drive, but sadly we didn’t much wildlife (we did see a bear on the Duffy). We will make sure we wave if we cross paths on the road! 🚐

@@hikenrv I stand corrected. It was the 12 between Lillooet and Lytton, and yes the Duffy had a lot of potholes.

Thanks for the tip Gord & Miki. We were just looking for a last minute getaway next weekend. Everything bookable around the lower mainland is fully booked. But this is FCFS, and looks like word hasn't gotten out yet.

Highly recommend! And yes, as FCFS it doesn’t show up on the reservation site! PS…about an hours drive to a wonderful bakery in Ashcroft or the other way Fort Berens Winery in Lilloet if of interest. And perhaps let Steve (Park operator) know you saw Gordon and Miki’s post…he was pleased we were going to do so.

Just got back. Wayne says hi! Update for those wanting to go. The trails in the park still have a lot of forest fire deadfall, making the trails difficult to navigate. But other than that, it's a great park and campground.

@@thomasquigley7040 thank you! Yes, we expected the forest at least to the west of the campground to be largely still recovering from the fire…will be for a few years we expect.

Skihist looks great. Are they the same hosts that used to be there? They were there for years. We will have to check it out. I actually like the sound of the trains. I hope it warms up soon. We put our snow tires back on. Nancy

No camp host, at least so far. The Park operator was quite pleasant however and he is actually on site..but not really a host. One nice thing about highway via Fraser Canyon…scenic and not too high (345m).

The couple that used to be there were campground operators/hosts and had installed solar lights around the restrooms. They tried really hard to make it nice. They looked after Goldpan Park too. Nancy

Yes, overall campground itself is good, but yes, some trees gone at the picnic site across the road. We were so pleased to be there once again! Finch is good on the road, but not so good at 3 am if raining. He wants everyone up if that is the case.

Another great video, nice tour of the Skihist Park. Wonderful that it is open again. I like both your new shelter and the table cloth. Nice thing about the cloth is that it works on the thick picnic table tops that our BC parks often have, something the old metal clips can't do.
@hikenrv

Almost guaranteed it will be dry there and some sun ..at least not nearly as wet as farther west. And yes, we were pleased that the new table cloth seems like a great fit! The new shelter is still in beta test mode! We couldn’t find a review anywhere on it.

Need the rain to help put out those lingering fires. We tend to look on those canopy/shelter things as semi disposable. Mind, they last years but I don't worry at all about cooking underneath it or placing it too close to a wood fire. We use our propane campfire under it all the time. Do you know if Goldpan is open again? I love that site, trains on both sides o the river, the river, the highway...noisy is an understatement!
@hikenrv
@hikenrv 4 ай бұрын
Appreciate your experience on the canopy…very much tent like in fact. And yes, the rain does help, but so dry there even afterwards. No puddles and no bugs! As for Goldpan it is still closed with BC Park referencing slope instability, but it didn’t look like they were doing work anywhere close. In some ways, the views are better at Skihist, but it is so nice to be close to the river at Goldpan. As for train noise, you can barely hear it at Skihist, but at Goldpan you can hear and feel the trains going by…loud, but somewhat fun, we enjoy it there too!
