I love the way Austrian people speak. It’s the cooler German. They always sound a lot more sarcastic just the way their intonation sounds. A lot of Austrian German is similar to Bavarian German because linguistically 70% of Austria speaks kind of Bavarian dialects. The other parts sound a bit more Switzerland German. The Swiss do speak an Allemanian accent. Like the people in the Black Forest down to Lake Constance.

Wow, Grayson really has a knack for different accents. He pronounced "sicher" with a tyrolean "ch" so much more authentic than I could - and I grew up in the same region where you live now (license plate "BGL ...")

Yeah, the pronounciation of "ch". MANY German-learners struggle with it! The trick is to basically not pronouncing it at all but to simply breathe out through your mouth. Grayson and Kevin are pronouncing it very well around 6:45!
@richard--s
@richard--s 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the "ch" is without any voice, move your tongue up to the "ceiling" of your mouth and slowly breath out a bit. The Tyroleans do it harder, they move thier tonge up and back a bit while doing it - and the Swiss make it even stronger, with even a bit of a rolling sound in it. But that's too strong and very unusual for Germany or Austria ;-) And yes, Grayson was perfect with the German and the Tyrolean versions! Congratulations! I was speechless as I heard him say it in the video so effortlessly and perfectly, great! It's great when it's easy as fun! 👍

Your kids get the time of their life here in Germany/Austria ... A big thumbs up for giving them all these experiences/opportunities they would never have in the U.S. ... and it´s good to see you look for places to stay that allow for some "off-time" as parents so you do have some time for yourself.

Hi guys 🙋‍♂! Watching your todays video let me forget the problems and thoughts, grown up people like me do have at the moment. Almost 30 minutes of curiosity, pleasure, satisfaction and relaxing. I appreciate these moments 👍👍👍. Thank you for this video and for sharing a big part of your life to people like me, who are following the McFalls on KZbin. What a wonderful vacation ! It's so interesting to see how different your kids are. Grayson the fearless one just going ahead and trying things out very open mindedly, his siblings standing back and watching before they also try. Griffin the 'book worm' spending his time with Harry Potter but then hyper actively storming the climbing wall and letting everybody know about his happiness and little Ella being the cutie of the family and Daddy's girl. Gabriel is doing an amazing job with arch and bow, has he done that before ? It's lovely to watch your family and yes, it does bring a smile to my face during these sad times. Have the refugees you hosted left yet ?

Lovely to watch your holiday in the Kinderhotel. Concerning the "ch"-Laut a little help: In standard German there are two distinctly different ways to pronounce the "ch". Let me give examples: in a word like "wach" (awake) the "ch" is as hard as they would have it in Austrian-German, while in "ich" the sound is way softer and formed more in the front part of the mouth. So this difference goes through, like "ich; wichtig; richtig; Kelch" etc. as opposed to "wach; Krach; achtsam; Rache" etc. It tends to depend on the vowel it follows. The difference in Tyrol (and in Switzerland, too) is that the harder variety goes with a lot more words than in High-German. Keep the good work going!

Just FYI.. there are, at least before Covid, ski equipment flea markets. At local halls, before ski season, a club or town, will organize these markets for used ski equipment. Second hand Skis, boots, sticks, gloves, suits and so on can be found for affordable prices. We buy our things here for our kids instead of buying new as they out grow them fast or they lose interest. It’s also cheaper than renting if you plan to go often. Once out grown and if in decent condition you can sell them back through these markets. Also, local sports clubs, organize ski lessons for kids of all levels. In our town, they are picked up by the Rathaus and taken by bus to the slopes each day for three days. Check the local sports/Fussball club’s sites for more info. Your school may also do something like. I heard, that in schools around the mountains that it is also part of the curriculum to learn how to ski.

Thank you very much for your frequent uploads and what a wonderful family you are in so many ways. I am scratching my head more frequently than ever, having migrated to Australia from Germany in the early 1980's, now living under the Sydney flight, enduring crippling heat waves for most of the year and still at the receiving end of the occasional ethnic slur, when I only had to move a fraction of the distance to a place like that. Not all plain sailing all of the time I propose, but as I 'said' ... In closing, I would not be surprised to see your kids in forthcoming Olympics.

Loved it, especially the beginning where Ella got help from her brother with the shoes (As an older brother I am a sucker for everything where older kids help their younger siblings). Great that Gabriel is getting into archery, It is not only a fun and maybe even competitive activity but it also can help you learn how to better focus (by blending out the surroundings and concentrating on a single task). When you said the other kids were not interesting in riding at the beginning I thought "That is awesome, offer what you can and let them decide", another way to improve independence. As you said in earlier videos, geographically you have a lot of options to travel, can't wait to see what you make of this opportunity. Oh, and considering the area you live in (which appears to be more rural), there might be a chance to find some inexpensive riding opportunities (often combined with animal care) if one of your kids shows interest in something like that (I live in the north but when I was young we had a lot of people, mostly girls, that spent at least one day of the weekend riding and caring for a horse, should be even easier in the rural south).

Hehe, lots of words to train the "ch", and that it is NOT "Utshensay", "Whatshou" or "Buttshou" :-) Part of many town names is "Au" ("Aue", which google says is "floodplain" or "lea" in english; and there are several german, swiss and austrian villages/towns which have the very short name "Au"), and "Buche" is a beech tree. In the german translation of LotR, there are "Auenland" and "Auenwald" (a forest in an "Au"), and if those trees in an "Au" are beech trees, it might cause people to name a village after them "Buchenau" (Buchen-Au, mostly spoken as Buche-nau, but always with that harsh CH). Another word for training: "Bach" which is a brook/creek and also the name of a famous composer.

Hey great you showed your audience the concept of a kinderhotel and some inside-looks! I think it's a wonderful concept especially with all the freedom you have and kids and parents can all kind of do what they want to do. If these don't exist yet in the US (especially with all inclusive and all that) well there's a big fat market niche, probably even for a US-style chain.

I've never seen the Achensee bank covered with snow. We've been travelling to Achenkirch (which is at the other side of the lake) a lot when I was a bit younger, but only in summertime, so I'm pretty familiar with summertime sightseeing in this area*, but I didn't know that there is a Kinderhotel in Buchau, so, as I have a 5yo now, this will be the next place to be this or next summer, like to travel together? * there is a awesome former mining tunnel right next to a orrery in Schwaz, the tunnel has guided tours for all ages and the orrery as also shows for small kids, older kids and adults. There is a cristal world in Rattenberg and a whole street sells products made out of glass. The biggest wax candle museum (and selling hall) of Europe is located in Brixlegg, I like t there, you can watch how candles are made. There is a dairy in Mayrhofen (Erlebnissennerei Zillertal), where you could watch the whole process of making cheese through an awesome glass walkaround and looking through windows, book a guided tour or just listen to the headset and also go into a cow and goat barn. There are pretty much waterfalls araund Achenkirch and the Achensee area, and it is always fun for kids to play with the water. You can also go skiing on the Gletscher (45 mins drive) in mid summer, but there is also a amazing stalagtite cave up there (Spannnagelhöhle). There is a geological hiking trail where you can see plenty of geological stones of different ages (Geo-Pfad Obere Ampelsbach-/Filzmoosbach-Schlucht, Steinberg). There are so many things to do...it is an all time place to be.

The pronunciation "BuSCHau" for "BuCHau" would be wrong in both in Germany and Austria. The difference in pronunciation between Germany and Tyrol would be the CH, as demonstrated by your son with the word "sicher". And don't even try to learn Tyrolean...just stare at them until they speak understandable German. That's what we non-Tyrolean Austrians do. :-D In the resort, they were probably speaking "defused" Tyrolean.
@Alexander-dt2eq

haha "defused".. yes learning Tyrolean ch is impossible to learn just as Swish-German style.

Yeah Tyroleans are - as we call it in Austria - either "raspeln" means= "shreding/rasping" or "sageln" = Austrian colloquial speech for "sägen" = "sawing" - a lot while speaking. ;-D It´s not only with "ch" but also the "R" there is almost no difference in sound between "ch" and "R" in the Tyrolean dialect...because they are the only ones in Austria who are soley using the "backthroat R" but always extremely very hard pronounced sounding like harrumphing and which they also do while pronouncing "ch" .... But the very vast majority of the rest in Austria or better said in évery other Austrian dialect there is no emphasis on a backthroat sound at all nor for "ch" or the "R". The "ch" is just a voiced "h" sound produced way more in the front than in the back of the mouth and the "R" is just slightly rolled (the more east you go in Austria the slighter the rolling of the "R") and the "backthroat R" is not used at all never ever. Now you were in Tyrol twice..I recommend to make alpine holidays in other parts of Austria as well...Styria/Steiermark and Carinthia/Kärnten has also very gorgious places (those are the places I prefer to make vacation as an Austrian knowing my country..for the most part because they have way better "local food specialties" than Tyrol in my humble opinion) and their dialects sounding totally different by the way which would be a nice experience for you from the point of "german learners" as well.

If you like big, warm lakes, check out Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, in the south of Austria, close to the Italian and Slovene border. One of the warmest and largest lakes (16.5km in length), beautiful scenery, and ideal to make a quick hop (or continue towards) down to the Mediterranean. That's my home town :) July and August are ideal. The smaller towns around the lake like Pörtschach are the more touristy ones.

@@LyraSvalbard I am just really bad at Grammar rules. for me it’s all intuition. I think the big debate among German speaker is how to pronounce the CH when words start with it :-). the south stands firmly by a „K“ sound, while the middle and the north say it like in „Licht“. of course swiss and tyroleans only have the harsh CH (as long as it’s in the middle or at the end of the word.

@@philipptielmann I thought more Germans say it with a "sch" sound, like Schemie, Schina, etc. I always make fun of my husband that it rhen also must be Schemnitz. It's just so inconsistent, I think we do a much better job in the South :)
@philipptielmann
@philipptielmann 2 жыл бұрын
@@j.a.1721 no it’s clearly a soft ch sound and only people from bavaria actually question this ;-). there are a lot of inconsistencies in the German language and mixed backgrounds. using names (of people or cities) is generally not valid as the pronounciation and spelling of these is usually full of regional historic artifacts. this also becomes apparent in some words that come from Latin like “Chor”.

Little German lesson: Buch-au. There is no "s" in it (Buschau is wrong). The Bus-drivers pronunciation = the German pronunciation. It might derive from 1) the tree "Buche" (beech) which is the 2nd most common tree in Austria and 2) Au or Aue - which mostly means land closed to running water, that gets flooded every now & then (e.g. snow melt or heavy rains)
