the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. kzbin.infoUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

You're young, you have your whole life ahead of you, then one day you wake up -- you're into woodworking, you have a riding lawnmower, you like single malt scotch, and waxing your pipe doesn't mean what it used to.

To get the stem into the block, have you tried putting the stem in the freezer for a bit. The cold shrinks it making it easier to put into your block. Once the stem warms up, it's not going anywhere

TIP! To prevent kinking the stem when heating and bending it; first insert a length of stainless steel wire down the length of it. It will prevent the small hole from collapsing and deforming. Wakodahatchee Chris

A long pipe like this is called a churchwarden. The longer stem makes the tobacco smoke cooler, but it can also be a little harder to draw from due to the length of the stem. Packing a pipe correctly does take some practice as well, so those trying pipe smoking for their first time might experience problems when trying to keep the tobacco lit. Anyone trying pipe smoking with also want a tamper as well, for tamping down the tobacco both during packing and while smoking. Smoking the occasional pipe can be a really satisfying and zen experience. There's a ton of tobaccos to choose from. You're better off skipping the grocery store tobaccos like Captain Black and trying something more expensive from a tin (which you can get from smoke shops or online). If you're new to smoking, I would suggest choosing a mild to medium tobacco first, such as a virginia rather than a perique or latakia. These stronger tobaccos can definitely make you dizzy which can be unpleasant and a big tur off if it's your first go around. The fragrance people tend to associate with pipes is actually a type of tobacco called cavendish, which has that sweet aroma to it. Most pipe tobacco is actually made from a blend of different tobaccos though that are grown and cured in different ways to give them their various flavors or aromas. Have fun.

This might be my favorite project you've ever done. I bought a Savinelli pipe in Estonia years ago when I traveled the globe with the Harlem Globetrotters. We'd smoke our pipes (some smoked cigars) in the closed outdoor cafes in our European hotels. Years later I gave it to my father. He had it for 11 years and after he died in 2020, I found it in his dresser in the exact same condition. He was too scared to use it because he thought it was too nice. So now I smoke it occasionally with a local group of tobacco pipe smokers. We gather around someones backyard fire pit, smoke our pipes, drink whiskeys or bourbons and talk about Inklings, dragons, wood, smoke and other things that get lost in the night. Thanks to your video, I'm going to put some briar wood saw dust on my shop floor.

I agree that this may be one of my favorite projects that I have ever seen. I have been using a pipe to keep the insects away on the Maine rivers for about 30 years. I just picked up wood working 8 years ago and never put the two together. When my shop gets up and running after the house is built. I think I must try this out. Thank you for great work and great content!!

Yes a great mini-project there, Jason. I roared with merriment at then final scene in your garden. When I was about twenty ( a few years back) I smoked a pipe which I always left clean with those pipe pull-throughs etc, and left it on my dresser with my tobacco pouch and lighter. Next time I would light-up the pipe would be nasty and wet which puzzled me. Turns out that my ten year-old sister was smoking it too with a friend up in the bushes! That ended my pipe-smoking career, and it sat in a drawer for many more years and I transitioned to cigarillos.

I don't smoke. But I have noticed that pipes have two very specific uses. The first is for extreme approval of machines. Tapping a pipe out on the boiler of an old steam tractor or on the tyre of a vintage car really demonstrates the unspoken yet unbreakable bond between the smoker and machine (which may often be referred to as "old girl"). The second is for pointing at people. When the mouthpiece is pointed towards a young nephew, it is usually accompanied by life changing advice. Similarly taking aim with it at the neighbours cat, which has once again encroached on the runner bean patch will deter it for a significant number of weeks.... great vid Jason so glad you don't smoke because we need you to stay healthy for years and years to come, I mean you haven't built a cathedral yet and I am sure its on your list.

LOL. I make wood rings on my lathe as a way to use my cutoffs and scraps. I sand those down to 800, add some coats of CA as s finish, and then go all the say to 3000. Sanding is a pain, but it does fix a lot of mistakes and in the end, it's like glass. Nobody enjoys sanding (at least no sane person), but it makes our work look good. That briar burl is beautiful!

you need 2x 72 belt grinder. I watched to much forged in fire and wanted to make some knives so I built me my very own grinder. OMG I had no clue how much I would use it in everyday wood working. Small wheel attachments can almost do every spot a small drum will go except there is a 72 inches surface and it never plugs up or gets hot. I would not part with mine for nothing. I can sharpen my high sped steel lathe tools in seconds. They are perfect for free hand shaping pipes. You can build one for very little as they are simple machines.
